Woodland, CA – The Woodland Public Library is excited to continue its Science and Society Discussion Series in October with two enlightening sessions focused on important health and science issues. The series offers an open forum for the public to engage with experts in their fields on topics of societal and scientific importance.

Topic: Overview of Skin Cancer
Speaker: Dr. Debra Horney, Retired Dermatologist
Join Dr. Debra Horney for a presentation on how to identify common skin cancers and strategies for risk reduction. After the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to receive a skin cancer screening.

Topic: UV Exposure in Vehicles
Speaker: Michael Siminovitch, Faculty Director, California Lighting Technology Center, UC Davis
Professor Siminovitch will discuss the effects of UV exposure in vehicles and offer attendees a unique opportunity to have their vehicles assessed for UV transmission through passenger-side windows.
Both sessions aim to foster a deeper understanding of the topics while providing practical, hands-on experiences such as skin cancer screenings and UV exposure measurements.
The Science and Society Discussion Series is an ongoing public forum that encourages meaningful engagement between the public and experts on pressing issues at the intersection of science and civic life. Topics covered in this series often include environmental concerns, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), climate change, and the relationship between science and public policy. The series promotes open dialogue and aims to increase public understanding while contributing to the development of informed public policies.
