31 May Call to Artists – Plastic Free July
The Davis Food Co-op invites local artists to participate in their celebration of Plastic Free July with a submission into their recyclable art exhibition that will run throughout the entire month of July. Artworks will be exhibited at the Co-op to stimulate conversation about waste reduction and responsible consumerism. We will also feature the artists’ work in our newsletter as well as in press releases to local publications and social media.
Thematically we are looking for works that represent our collective need to stop polluting our environment with toxic materials and more responsibly deal with our waste. We would like to see works that incorporate waste (e.g. Plastic materials, old appliances, etc.) as a medium to highlight this issue. Think seagulls or whales sculpted out of plastic bottles with plastic bags draped to depict waves of the ocean; the possibilities are as endless as your imagination! We cannot wait to see what your creative minds come up with.
As a grocery store, we are a family-friendly venue, so only works with appropriate content will be eligible. If you have questions on what is acceptable please feel free to email us.
Requirements for the Artwork:
The artwork must be a physical piece such as a sculpture, painting, drawing, etc. and must include recyclable materials.
The artist is responsible for the delivery of their physical work to and from the Davis Food Co-op, as well as all related expenses.
Works must not exceed a 3ft x 3ft space and 20lb limit due to limited exhibition space.
Works must be sturdy enough to be moved daily from exhibition space to storage space in store after close. Please ensure that works will not collapse when moved.
Submitting your Artwork
To submit your artwork for consideration, please send an email to [email protected] with the subject line “Plastic Free July Submission” by June 24th. Be sure to include a photo of your artwork, your name, contact information, a short description of the piece and any social media accounts or websites you would like to direct people to.
The top five submissions will receive a space to present their artwork. The top three winners from those submissions will be decided by customer’s votes and will receive sustainability items gifted from The Davis Food Co-op.
