Rewilding: The role of habitat restoration and species reintroduction in achieving climate resiliency

Join us for the Environmental Law Society’s Annual Symposium on Friday March 8th, 2024 at King Hall. The symposium will feature three panels exploring the multiple benefits of habitat restoration, species reintroduction and how to address the potential legal, policy, and social challenges of rewilding. Panelists will include attorneys, scientists, researchers, civil servants, and non-profit professionals.

Panel 1 “Getting Acquainted: Species Management in California”
Historical background of species loss in California. Overview of the differences between reintroduction, restoration, coexistence, relocation, and connectivity (e.g., wildlife crossings, passages, and corridors) and introduction to how intentional restoration and species recovery management work in practice.

Panel 2 “Legal, Policy, and Social Considerations when Bringing back a Species”
Explore the legal aspects of species management and how to mitigate human-wildlife conflict. Identify where work needs to be done on a policy level as well as social considerations for effective habitat restoration and species reintroduction projects.

Panel 3 “Making Rewilding a Reality: the Necessity of a Multi-disciplinary approach”

Discuss the importance of co-management and co-governance and the co-benefits of habitat restoration and species reintroduction, particularly in creating more resilient systems.

This is an in-person event held at King Hall (UC Davis School of Law). Light breakfast and lunch will be served to attendees. MCLE credits will be available. We hope to see you there!
