Garments and textiles from around the globe are showcased in “Cultural Crossroads: Recent Acquisitions from the Jo Ann C. Stabb Collection,” which opens at the UC Davis Design Museum’s 2023-2024 season on Sept. 26.
Despite the challenges posed by the global pandemic, the UC Davis Jo Ann C. Stabb Design Collection has been actively extending its range of holdings through generous donations. This exhibition celebrates this growth by showcasing a group of textiles and costumes acquired over the past three years in response to diversifying the curriculum of the Department of Design.
The objects on display connect to people by bringing together time-honored artisanship and artistic creation that offer broader perspectives of human intelligence and imaginative expression. From a collection of exquisite African ceremonial textiles, Miao costumes from southwest China, and various Japanese kimonos, to contemporary textile work by Marian Clayton, a leading textile artist, these aesthetically unique objects spark inspiration and open up discussion about design inclusion at the cultural crossroads.
Curated by Adele Zhang, Department of Design senior continuing lecturer and design collection curator, the exhibition runs through Dec. 1.
