Long-time Davis residents Stephanie Koop and Larry Fisher have an abiding passion for ecological causes. As our home planet groans under the weight of mass consumerism, these dedicated activists have taken a bold and significant step forward in lessening our carbon footprint by forming Community Mercantile.
This nonprofit venture focuses on keeping a wide variety of valuable, usable products in circulation—and out of the landfill—for as long as possible.
On Sept. 11, 2022, Community Mercantile had a hugely successful soft opening of their new 2,200 sq. ft. warehouse located at 622 Cantrill Drive in Davis, CA. Nearly 200 eager shoppers found their way into this spacious store that is packed with a wide assortment of clothing, furniture, appliances, household goods, construction materials, and miscellaneous items.
Future ventures will include upcycling and repair workshops as well as a tool lending library.
The grand opening celebration for Community Mercantile will take place on Sunday, Oct. 30, from 3–5p with a brief welcome speech by Stephanie Koop at 3:30p. Light refreshments will be offered, and a reusable gift will be given to the first 100 people who attend.
There will be a Halloween theme, so costumes are encouraged. Those wishing to browse and make purchases are encouraged to arrive from 1–3p. It’s easy to see why their motto is “Shop Here First and Save the Planet!”
