Sligo, Ireland (Jan. 28, 2020) – Having just finished recording on the southwest coast of Ireland, acclaimed Irish band Téada embarks on a national US tour this spring with their first new album in seven years. Driven by the timeless, expressive force of traditional music inherited from past generations, Téada has been described “at the cutting edge of the next generation of Irish musicians…with a fierce familiarity with the old ways.” (Irish Music Magazine)
Last here in 2017, Téada returns on Thursday February 27th, 7:30PM to the Palms Playhouse, 13 Main St., Winters. Tickets are $22 advance, $26 door, available through palmsplayhouse.com.
Joining the band will be champion stepdancer and Ventura, CA native Samantha Harvey (pictured), with her unique repertoire of Irish sean nos (old style) and Ottawa Valley step dance.
Téada (‘strings’ in Irish) first linked up in 2001 for an innovative Irish TV show, as a group of like-minded young musicians inspired by a deeply traditional approach. Led by Sligo fiddler Oisín Mac Diarmada, they quickly gained notice as Best Traditional Newcomers, and The Irish Times lauded the band for “keeping the traditional flag flying at full mast.” Their vision and virtuosity has grown through two decades and each of their six albums. Their last CD, 2013’s ‘In Spite of the Storm,’ was hailed by The Irish Echo as “one of the outstanding releases in recent memory.”
The 2020 tour highlights Mac Diarmada, called “one of the most talented fiddlers in Ireland today” by The Irish Echo, and most recent Téada member Séamus Begley, a legendary musician from West Kerry and a past Ireland ‘Traditional Singer of the Year’ (TG4 Awards), known for his fiery accordion playing and famous wit. Joining them are two regular guest players with the band: Patrick Doocey, one of Ireland’s finest young guitarists and a frequent member of Irish supergroup Lúnasa, and Sean Gavin, whose award-winning ornate and driving style on the flute and uilleann pipes reflects his lifelong immersion in Irish music, encouraged by his father Clare fiddler Mick Gavin.
With a truly worldwide reach, Téada has appeared in concert and at major music festivals across the globe, including the Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe, the Penang World Music Festival in Malaysia, the Edmonton Folk Festival in Canada, and Campeche International Festival in Mexico. Playing music from as far back as the 18th century to more modern traditional tunes, Téada encompasses the interaction of music past and present.
