Memorial Tile-making Workshop

People of all ages are invited to make a ceramic tile for a covid memorial mosaic installation currently underway at the Davis Cemetery District. The Davis Craft and Vintage Fair is hosting the workshop this Sunday, August 4, from 10am to 1pm in Davis’ Central Park at 301 C Street. This is the last in a series of tile-making workshops that have taken place throughout the City of Davis this summer. No special skills are required and all supplies and instructions will be provided for this fun and free activity.

Tiles made at the workshop will become part of the mosaic artwork for the permanent COVID-19 memorial currently underway at the cemetery, located at 820 Pole Line Road. The memorial features a walking path, art installations, seating/reflection space, informational signage, and privacy landscaping. The memorial documents the lived experience of our community during the covid pandemic and offers a reflective and cathartic space for those experiencing the impacts of covid and others experiencing and recovering from loss and grief.

The Cemetery District formed a Memorial Subcommittee and an Art Team to complete this project and conducted two public surveys to solicit community input for the project. The mosaic artist team includes Wes Horn (lead artist), Jennifer Nachmanoff, and Donna Lemongello. Additional artists are working on murals and a reflecting wall for the memorial. Mosaic installation is already well underway and visitors to the cemetery can view the ongoing progress over the coming weeks.
