Salon Series | Rae Gouirand: A discussion and reading in celebration of Little Hour, a new collection of poetry

November 17, 2022 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Rae Gouirand will read from her recently published short collection of poems Little Hour and discuss the life cycles of poetry manuscripts and of micropress poetry publishing, the queer spaces and headspaces of her new work, her thoughts about the tensions inherent in the line and in the image, and the process of creating and selecting original cover art for her work. Images accompanying the presentation will be made available for sale at the event to benefit the Sacramento LGBT Community Center, which is working tirelessly to make our region a place where LGBTQ+ people thrive.
Rae Gouirand is the author of two collections of poetry, Glass is Glass Water is Water (Spork Press, 2018) and Open Winter (winner of the Bellday Prize, Bellday Books, 2011), the chapbooks Jinx (winner of the Summer Kitchen Competition, Seven Kitchens Press, 2019) and Must Apple (winner of the Oro Fino Competition, Educe Press, 2018), and a short work of nonfiction, The History of Art (winner of the Open Reading Competition, The Atlas Review, 2019). Her newest publication, the chapbook Little Hour, is the winner of the 2021 Swan Scythe Chapbook Contest and was just published by Swan Scythe Press, a poetry micropress founded by Yolo County poet Sandra McPherson and currently directed by editor Robert Pesich.
Rae’s work has appeared in American Poetry Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, Conjunctions, Crazyhorse, diode, jubilat, Michigan Quarterly Review, The Rumpus, ZYZZYVA, two volumes of the Best New Poets series, Queer Nature: A Poetry Anthology, and many other journals and anthologies nationwide, and she has received fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center, the Santa Fe Art Institute, Kalani, Willapa Bay AiR, and the In Cahoots Artists’ Residency programs to support her poetry and nonfiction. A resident of Yolo County since 2003, she leads several longrunning independent workshops locally and online, including the cross-genre workshop Scribe Lab, and lectures in the Department of English at UC-Davis.
In the tradition of the Salon, YoloArts + Yolo County Historical Collection, invite you to join us monthly to learn from makers and shakers of Yolo County to exchange ideas and increase knowledge through conversation with community members, accompanied by sips and snacks.
