This Salon, hear from Tomás Montoya, Lead Teaching Artist of the Juvenile Justice Arts Education Program, accompanied by youth participants and graduates, about the impact he has seen the Juvenile Justice Arts Education Program has had over the last 5+ years. Montoya will share his experiences and how he learned that students are not “empty buckets” in which to pour our expertise. Come hear what tools and methods he uses to to channel the inherent creativity of students.
YoloArts’ Juvenile Justice Arts Education Program serves youth incarcerated, and on probation. Taught by professional teaching artists, students learn different art-making techniques that enable them to constructively and creatively express their personal voice. Youth receive instruction in visual, performing, and literary arts.
Tomás Montoya is a visual artist, poet, filmmaker, and community worker born in San Francisco and raised in Sacramento. Since 1998, Tomás has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. In April 2015, Tomás received his Bachelor of Science degree in Digital Film and Video Production from the Art Institute of Sacramento. Tomás is currently the Lead Teaching Artist for the Juvenile Justice Arts Education Program. In 2021 Tomás received his CTE credential and now teaches Digital Multimedia Production at Cesar Chavez Community School in Woodland, CA.
