Yolo Co. Voter Forum

by: Lorna Carriveau, League of Women Voters
League of Women Voters Forums Coming Soon
The League of Women Voters of Yolo County will be hosting multiple public, nonpartisan forums in September and October in advance of the general election on November 3.
The League’s first forum in Davis, on Thursday, Sep. 30, will be a nonpartisan voter education forum focusing on Proposition 39. Proposition 39, known as the Prohibit Voting Without Government-Issued ID initiative, aims to require all voters in California to present government-issued identification when they submit their ballot and to prove U.S. citizenship at the time they register to vote. This initiative is designed to create a new voter ID requirement and a new citizenship documentation process for voter registration. Proposition 39 increases the documentation requirements for eligible citizens to participate in elections in an effort to prevent non-citizen voting.
League members will join election and voting rights guest speakers to present Proposition 39 information to help us all better understand current Voter Registration/CA Voter ID laws and constitutional provisions, and how this proposition will change them if passed.
This forum will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Brunelle Hall, Davis High School, 315 W. 14th Street, Davis.
Davis Media Access will be videotaping the event, which will be posted online at the League’s website, https://lwvyolo.org, through election day.
On Thursday, Oct. 8, the League will also host a candidate forum for California’s 4th Congressional District. The top-two primary vote winners, Eric Jones and Mike Thompson, will participate in a 90-minute discussion of district opportunities and challenges.
Rep. Mike Thompson currently represents California’s 4th Congressional District, which includes all or parts of Lake, Napa, Solano, Sonoma, and Yolo Counties. Thompson serves on the House Committee on Ways and Means, where he is Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Tax and a senior member of the Health Subcommittee.
Eric Jones and his family have lived in Sonoma County for several years. Formerly a partner at Dragoneer Investment Group. Jones and his wife founded the Rachel and Eric Jones Foundation, described as “a community-rooted family foundation,” and Jones co-founded the American Dream Institute focusing on the “next generation of voices.”
This forum will run from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Woodland Community and Senior Center, 2001 East St., Woodland.
On Friday, Oct. 9, the League will also host a nonpartisan forum for candidates running for Davis Joint Unified School Districts 1 and 4 at the Davis City Council Chambers, 23 Russell Blvd., Davis. Information about the candidates and time of the event will be available soon on the League’s website at https://lwvyolo.org.
Candidate forum questions will be prepared by League representatives and written questions will be accepted from the audience, but no voice questions or statements will be allowed. No campaign literature or paraphernalia, such as signs, T-shirts, hats, buttons, etc., will be allowed inside the meeting rooms.
Links to the all events will be available on the League of Women Voters of Yolo County’s website through election day at https://lwvyolo.org.
