SUMMARY:The Abstract Language of Ceramics
DESCRIPTION:The Abstract Language of Ceramics\nExhibit: April 10 – June 3\, 2026\nReception: April 10\, 6-9 PM (Free) \nThe Abstract Language of Ceramics features the work of ceramic artists Karyn Gabriel\, Mark Goudy\, Kris Marubayashi\, Liza Riddle\, and Laura Van Duren. Together\, these artists create striking geometric and biomorphic forms that underline their pursuit of simple forms inspired by nature. Karyn Gabriel’s woven vessels and hangings merge the idea of fiber and weaving with the flexible nature of clay. Goudy’s current sculptures are modeled on mathematical equations\, which he adapts on the computer\, using new technology to design and create molded forms. Kris Marubayashi’s vessels have a sense of movement and balance\, and employ natural textures and an earth-toned palette. Liza Riddle’s modified cubes\, hanging plinths\, and circles use color sparingly to emphasize the beauty of cracks that form while drying. Laura Van Duren shows a playful incorporation of found objects\, textiles\, and clay\, closely resembling the corporal reality of human interaction. \nThis exhibit is sponsored by Hollie Malamud & Chris Kelsch\, and Helen McClosky\, in memory of ceramicist Shelly Simon. \nImage:\nLaura Van Duren\, “Curl”\nKris Marubayashi\, Untitled\nKaryn Gabriel\, “Aspen Brick”\nMark Goudy\, “Flux Series”\nLiza Riddle\, Untitled

SUMMARY:Colorful Creations by Loom & Lens
DESCRIPTION:This show presents Robin Lynde’s and Garry Everett’s two distinct artforms. Robin’s vibrant hand-woven textiles\, ranging from wraps to refined home goods\, use sophisticated color\, pattern\, and structure. Garry’s stunning wildlife and landscape photography demonstrate an expressive color palette and clarity of composition. His images capture the natural world while emphasizing the emotions that color can evoke. The artists show how color shapes perception and illuminates form\, bridging the worlds of fiber and light.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Paper Trail: Restoring Identity Through Genetic Genealogy
DESCRIPTION:The Davis Genealogy Club presents\, “Beyond the Paper Trail: Restoring Identity Through Genetic Genealogy”\, by DNA expert Jonathan Long on Tuesday\, May 19th at 1 PM at the Davis Senior Center\, 646 A Street\, Davis. The public is invited to this free in-person program designed for curious researchers at all levels. \nWhat happens when the records go silent? This session dives into the transformative power of DNA\, showcasing real-world breakthroughs to show how advanced genetic testing can shatter ‘brick walls’ to reclaim the identity of lost ancestors. Navigating the complexities of Non-Paternity Events (NPEs)\, we’ll move beyond the data to reflect on the impact these discoveries have on the families who finally find their way home. This special in-person presentation will be followed by Q&A and refreshments provided by members. \nDavis resident Jonathan W. Long has spent over forty years tracing all of his family lines back through the American colonial era to their immigrant ancestors. He leverages both genetic and traditional genealogical methods to resolve complex lineage puzzles and helps coordinate the Davis Genealogy Club’s DNA study group. Since retiring from federal service\, he remains active in ecological restoration efforts in California and Arizona. \nThe DGC is open to new memberships all year–sign up online or in person. Annual dues are just $15\, providing many benefits such as recordings of past meetings\, members-only events\, plus much more. The Club’s Genealogy Library within the Davis Senior Center is an important community resource\, open to the public on Wednesdays from 1 – 3:30 p.m. and an hour before our monthly speaker meeting. Visitors can explore their family trees and get help from our volunteers. For more about Club programs\, the Library\, or to join DGC\, please visit DavisGenealogy.org.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Jessica Guerrieri
DESCRIPTION:From the award-winning\, bestselling author of Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea\, Jessica Guerrieri returns with Both Can Be True — a powerful new novel about sisterhood\, motherhood\, and the complicated truths women carry. Join Jessica in conversation with her sister\, Cara Cutter\, for an intimate and heartfelt evening exploring the real-life bonds that inspired this story. \nCelebrate publication day with The Avid Reader at the Veterans Memorial Theatre on May 19\, 2026\, from 7–9pm. Tickets include a signed copy of Both Can Be True. Expect an honest\, deeply personal conversation about writing\, family\, and the stories that bring us back to one another — followed by audience Q&A and book signing. \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nAbout the Book \nWhen a local mother goes missing\, two estranged sisters are pulled back into each other’s lives and forced to confront old wounds\, fractured trust\, and the many ways a woman can disappear in plain sight. \nFrankie is the funny one\, full of restless energy and sharp edges\, the sister who got sober\, opened a bookstore\, and slipped into a version of domestic life without ever fully confronting the past. Mere is the steady one\, the caretaker\, a mother quietly unraveling under the demands of her neurodivergent daughter and the loneliness of a marriage to a husband who sees the world through an entirely different lens. \nFor the Gilmore sisters\, losing their mother to cancer at a young age gave them a brief window of closeness they’ve never been able to reclaim. But over the years\, a mentally ill father\, the unspoken trauma of sexual violence\, and the different vices they turned to for survival fractured their bond and created a divide of resentment neither of them could bring themselves to cross. When a woman in Frankie’s social circle disappears\, the sisters are pulled into a shared reckoning and can no longer deny the past that has shaped so much of their present. \nSet against the backdrop of a quiet Northern California mountain town\, this gripping and emotionally layered novel unfolds in alternating perspectives\, revealing the many ways women vanish inside motherhood\, addiction\, marriage\, and shame. Told with raw honesty and wry compassion\, Jessica Guerrieri’s sophomore novel is a story of sisterhood\, acceptance\, the unspoken truths we carry\, and the redemptive power of bridging pain into connection.
