SUMMARY:The Abstract Language of Ceramics
DESCRIPTION:The Abstract Language of Ceramics\nExhibit: April 10 – June 3\, 2026\nReception: April 10\, 6-9 PM (Free) \nThe Abstract Language of Ceramics features the work of ceramic artists Karyn Gabriel\, Mark Goudy\, Kris Marubayashi\, Liza Riddle\, and Laura Van Duren. Together\, these artists create striking geometric and biomorphic forms that underline their pursuit of simple forms inspired by nature. Karyn Gabriel’s woven vessels and hangings merge the idea of fiber and weaving with the flexible nature of clay. Goudy’s current sculptures are modeled on mathematical equations\, which he adapts on the computer\, using new technology to design and create molded forms. Kris Marubayashi’s vessels have a sense of movement and balance\, and employ natural textures and an earth-toned palette. Liza Riddle’s modified cubes\, hanging plinths\, and circles use color sparingly to emphasize the beauty of cracks that form while drying. Laura Van Duren shows a playful incorporation of found objects\, textiles\, and clay\, closely resembling the corporal reality of human interaction. \nThis exhibit is sponsored by Hollie Malamud & Chris Kelsch\, and Helen McClosky\, in memory of ceramicist Shelly Simon. \nImage:\nLaura Van Duren\, “Curl”\nKris Marubayashi\, Untitled\nKaryn Gabriel\, “Aspen Brick”\nMark Goudy\, “Flux Series”\nLiza Riddle\, Untitled

SUMMARY:New Paintings by Pat Mahony
DESCRIPTION:The John Natsoulas Gallery is proud to present the newest exhibition of paintings by Sacramento-based artist\, Pat Mahony. The works in her exhibition\, all created within the last year\, are representative of her travels throughout California and to Hawaii. She captures endemic and tropical vegetation in her iconic\, impressionistic style.  \nPat Mahony’s natural environment serves as her greatest source of inspiration. She transforms the beauty of the world\, and the “perfect chaos” that signifies the ever-changing impressions imparted by the way that light can alter a moment. She is known for successfully matching the “wildness of nature with a wild and physical application of paint.” Pat Mahony was born in Southern California\, and studied printmaking and oil painting at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. During the 1980s\, she primarily showed her watercolors\, many of which were architectural scenes. After her early painting successes\, she took some time off to pursue other endeavors. Her desire to return to oil painting coincided with her move to a rural property along the Sacramento River. The resulting landscape paintings that she produced over the successive years were large-scale in format and were a strong representation of that land. Her later works\, painted after she relocated to the region near the American River\, became more focused on individual components within nature\, as she went on long walks along the river. She has achieved minute detail within her painting\, utilizing the scale to emphasize particular elements.  \nIn this exhibition she explores scale across multiple canvases\, creating a diptych and a quadriptych\, allowing for greater immersion and artistic presence. Mahony can best be categorized as a colorist\, with a style derived from the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists\, which is well suited for capturing the fleeting moments that begin and end in such rapid succession in the natural world. Her paintings are a balance between abstraction and representation. Immortalizing the vibrancy of the Sacramento Valley natural environment is key to her work\, and her dazzling painting captures the beauty of the beloved flora and landscape she calls home.  \nThe exhibition’s opening reception is to be held on Saturday\, May 30 from 7:00-9:00 PM. It will feature live music and refreshments. All are well\, and the event is free! \n

SUMMARY:Adding Stones to Rise A Group Exhibition of Sacramento-Based Artists
DESCRIPTION:Adding Stones to Rise\nA Group Exhibition of Sacramento-Based Artists\nArtist and Curator: Adero Willard \nMay 1 – May 29\, 2026\nSecond Saturday Reception: Saturday\, May 9\, 5–8 PM \nAdding Stones to Rise is a curated group exhibition bringing together Sacramento-based artists working across multiple media\, including painting\, printmaking\, ceramics\, sculpture\, and new media. The title was developed in response to the work and writings of the artists in the exhibition and to the regional presence of rivers that move through and around Sacramento. Water becomes a point of connection—flowing\, sustaining\, eroding\, nurturing\, and reshaping. It can lift\, carry\, overwhelm\, or renew. The flow of a river may also be understood simply as the movement of material through the earth. In this context\, adding stones may suggest burden\, accumulation\, protection\, labor\, or foundation; rising may evoke resistance\, healing\, survival\, visibility\, or change. \nArtists were selected to create a diversity of voice\, perspective\, process\, medium\, and identity\, speaking to the expansiveness of Blackness and representing a collective of varying experiences. Each point is distinct\, yet inseparable from the whole—reflecting how identity\, particularly Blackness\, can be understood as fluid\, relational\, and non-monolithic. \nAdding Stones to Rise centers the work of Black women and nonbinary artists—new to the region\, rooted here\, or returning. Together\, these artists offer a collective meditation on movement\, care\, resistance\, and transformation. This exhibition is one moment in an ongoing story. It is not the first of its kind\, and it will not be the last. \nCuratorial Note: As a curatorial framework\, stones\, water\, and rivers function as metaphors for ideas brought together in this space and may not reflect the specific themes or content of each artist’s work. \nParticipating Artists\nDebra Pitman\, Laurelin Gilmore\, Amari More\, Victoria Kinyanjui\, Khalia Morris\, Tasha Green\, Delgreta Brown\, Alex Lowe\, Sabrina Clark\, Tasha Nicole \nPress Contact\n[Adero Willard] [potterybyadero@gmail.com |

SUMMARY:Laura Benitez & The Heartache Live @ The Melon Ball
DESCRIPTION:Laura Benitez and the Heartache use the three chord tools of country music to tell the simple\, unvarnished truth about love\, too much whiskey\, and the call of the road. Their new album\, “California Centuries\,” finds the band delving deep into themes of collective denial (“Bad Things”)\, gaslighting (“Invisible” and “Gaslight”) and romantic lessons learned (“I’m the One” and “Are You Using Your Heart”). Their twangy honesty shines through in straightforward arrangements\, crystalline harmonies\, and spare instrumentation. Beware their catchy hooks and sweet melodies – these stray puppy tunes will follow you home and become your most steadfast companions. \nPresented by Left of the Dial and KDRT

SUMMARY:Mike Glazer “Self-Destructs” Stand-Up Comedy Live @ The Melon Ball
DESCRIPTION:Mike Glazer is chaotic good. A twisted and endearing storyteller\, much like an evil Mike Birbiglia. Everything he shares onstage is true\, and he has the receipts to prove it (unfortunately for him). \nMike was a strip-club–sponsored roller hockey goalie who nearly became an Olympian. After winning a gold medal with Team USA\, he pivoted to comedy\, joining forces with Taylor Swift’s Swifties to get Kanye West to quit Twitter. Somewhere between winning gold and fighting fascism\, he almost left the planet as an astronaut\, shared his phone number with the world in a prank gone wrong\, and somehow became the CIA… on Instagram.
