SUMMARY:Linda Clark Johnson: Sunshine & Shadows
DESCRIPTION:Linda Clark Johnson: Sunshine & Shadows\nExhibit: May 2 – June 21\, 2026\nLinda Clark Johnson is a Sacramento artist who primarily works with cyanotype\, an early photographic process that uses UV light to create luminous blue images without a camera or negative. Captivated by sunlight and always gathering plants\, she prints in her backyard\, capturing botanical impressions and their shadows on watercolor paper or fabric. She then uses natural toners\, collage\, watercolor\, and colored pencil to add layers of depth and detail to her work. Through her cyanotype prints\, she celebrates experimentation and the wonder of the natural world\, creating art that feels tranquil and atmospheric. \nArtist Talk & Reception: Sunday\, May 17\, 1-2:30 PM (Free)\nJoin artist Linda Clark Johnson as she discusses her artistic process in working with cyanotype\, including her love of sunlight and her ways of gathering and arranging plants. Linda will also show visitors how to get started with cyanotype through an artist demo\, as well as explore her current work in her exhibit\, Sunshine & Shadows. \nThis exhibit is sponsored by Wil & Karen Uecker. \nThe Pence Gallery is open 11:30 AM – 5 PM\, Tuesday through Sunday (closed Monday). \nImage: work by Linda Clark Johnson

SUMMARY:New Paintings by Pat Mahony
DESCRIPTION:The John Natsoulas Gallery is proud to present the newest exhibition of paintings by Sacramento-based artist\, Pat Mahony. The works in her exhibition\, all created within the last year\, are representative of her travels throughout California and to Hawaii. She captures endemic and tropical vegetation in her iconic\, impressionistic style.  \nPat Mahony’s natural environment serves as her greatest source of inspiration. She transforms the beauty of the world\, and the “perfect chaos” that signifies the ever-changing impressions imparted by the way that light can alter a moment. She is known for successfully matching the “wildness of nature with a wild and physical application of paint.” Pat Mahony was born in Southern California\, and studied printmaking and oil painting at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. During the 1980s\, she primarily showed her watercolors\, many of which were architectural scenes. After her early painting successes\, she took some time off to pursue other endeavors. Her desire to return to oil painting coincided with her move to a rural property along the Sacramento River. The resulting landscape paintings that she produced over the successive years were large-scale in format and were a strong representation of that land. Her later works\, painted after she relocated to the region near the American River\, became more focused on individual components within nature\, as she went on long walks along the river. She has achieved minute detail within her painting\, utilizing the scale to emphasize particular elements.  \nIn this exhibition she explores scale across multiple canvases\, creating a diptych and a quadriptych\, allowing for greater immersion and artistic presence. Mahony can best be categorized as a colorist\, with a style derived from the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists\, which is well suited for capturing the fleeting moments that begin and end in such rapid succession in the natural world. Her paintings are a balance between abstraction and representation. Immortalizing the vibrancy of the Sacramento Valley natural environment is key to her work\, and her dazzling painting captures the beauty of the beloved flora and landscape she calls home.  \nThe exhibition’s opening reception is to be held on Saturday\, May 30 from 7:00-9:00 PM. It will feature live music and refreshments. All are well\, and the event is free! \n

SUMMARY:UCD Graduate Exhibition: intersection of health\, tech\, art\, & design
DESCRIPTION:UC Davis Arts and Humanities Exhibition on View June 4-20 at the Manetti Shrem Museum\nBy College of Letters and Science Staff | May 26\, 2026 \nFrom digital data and technology to the environment\, healthcare and the body\, graduate students from across the College of Letters and Science at University of California\, Davis\, are pushing boundaries with their experimental research and creative expression. The results\, varied in medium and discipline\, will be on display at the Arts & Humanities 2026 Graduate Exhibition. \nThe multidisciplinary showcase runs June 4–20 at the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art. The opening night reception on June 4\,  5:30 to 9 p.m.\, is free and open to the public. Five student presentations and performances are scheduled. \nFour awards will be presented\, including three art purchase prizes. In all\, 20 Master of Fine Arts\, Master of Arts and doctoral students are participating. \n“Our graduate students are on the cutting edge of technology\, design and the arts\,” said Estella Atekwana\, dean of the College of Letters and Science at UC Davis. “They create their own techniques and technologies while thinking deeply and critically about everything they do. Now more than ever\, we need future leaders like these\, who engage across disciplines and media to meet the challenges of our rapidly changing world.” \nMuseum visitors can expect to encounter multimedia exhibits\, installations\, sculpture\, paintings\, drawings and collage as well as performances that will encourage them to engage with art and design in new ways. \n“It’s a joy to celebrate UC Davis’ dedicated\, talented and amazing arts graduate students with this annual exhibition\,” said Rachel Teagle\, the museum’s founding director. “We’re especially excited to increase the number of M.F.A. students’ work represented in the Fine Arts Collection with the support of the College of Letters and Science Dean’s Office.” \nA sampling of what the public will see and experience\nZahra Baxi (M.F.A.\, design) focuses on making complex systems accessible and engaging through data visualization and media. Using interactive mapping and visual design to reveal seasonal change and interconnected environmental processes\, Baxi explores the Yolo Basin as a dynamic system shaped by flood\, migration and agriculture. \nRafael Bertacini (M.F.A.\, design) explores how complex human experiences can be made tangible and legible through objects and interactions. In this work\, Bertacini investigates a multi-site wearable to support emotional regulation in neurodivergent adults living with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder. \nNick Block (M.F.A.\, art studio) engages with computer systems to investigate how digital data flows transform our physical landscape and lives. His installation pairs “breathing” 3D-printed grids with a disintegrating photographic cave to explore machine sentience and embodied experience within a hybrid digital-physical reality. \nTara K. Daly (M.F.A.\, art studio) engages symmetry as a compositional tool to speak about interconnectedness and entanglements. Her sculptural looms hold a variety of ways to interlace diverse kinds of materials into structured wholes that propose an ontology in which knowledge and being might emerge through interwoven\, relational processes. \nElieza Delaney-Lewis (M.F.A.\, design)\, guided by bodily awareness\, examines Western birthing spaces as systems shaping power\, movement and care\, and proposes womb-inspired architectural models that foster autonomy\, reciprocity\, relational trust and ecological approaches to health and design. \nDavion Mack (M.F.A.\, art studio)\, through sculpture\, explores how matter moves through geological and cosmic time. His current body of work centers on steel forms cradling geological matter\, emphasizing gravity\, care and balance while revealing memories contained in stones from various California landscapes. \nNidhi Mittal (M.F.A.\, design)\, focusing on issues of equity and representation in women’s health\, examines how experiences of perimenopause are shared and understood within digital communities\, translating user-generated discussions into quantitative insights to inform more human-centered digital health design. \nSean Olmstead (M.F.A. art studio) draws on humor\, anxiety and absurdity to explore our relationship with technology and electronic media. His gallery and performance works re-imagine technology systems and media landscapes\, conjuring natural and artificial processes and dynamics with sound\, video and installation. He will also perform on opening night. \nErika Tsimbrovsky (Ph.D. performance studies) will share an intimate performance at the opening shaped by movement\, voice\, silence and simple materials. Drawing from her Living Open Diary research\, the work explores how writing becomes choreography and how language unfolds as gesture\, trace and relation. \nFour Awards Announced at Opening; Colloquium June 5\nThe winners of the LeShelle & Gary May Art Purchase Prize\, the Keister & Allen Art Purchase Prize\, the Letters & Science Prize for Excellence\, and the Savageau Award in the Department of Design will be announced at the June 4 opening celebration. The first three prizes enable the Manetti Shrem Museum to purchase graduate student work for the university’s Fine Arts Collection\, and the Savageau Award recognizes and furthers the careers of a graduate in design. Art history graduate students will present their research at the Annual Art History Graduate Colloquium and Reception from 2 to 5 p.m. on June 5 at Everson Hall. \nThe Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art is located at 254 Old Davis Road. Public hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. Visit manettishrem.org for information. \n

SUMMARY:Pizza Night
DESCRIPTION:It’s pizza night at Upper Crust Bakery!\n\n\n\n\n\nHow Pizza Night Works\n\n\nPizza Night is Wednesdays at our Davis location only. We’ll start in Winters soon.\nWe generally do not take walk-ins—please pre-order your pizza!\nPlace your order early! We often sell out.\nWe make a limited number of pizzas each half-hour. If your 1st choice of pick-up time is sold out\, try an alternate time slot.\nOrders close at noon Wednesday or when we sell out\, whatever comes first.\nYou can get desserts\, baked goods\, beverages\, beer & wine when you pick up your pizza.\nHaving trouble ordering? Call (530) 750-1180.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Pizza Night\n\n\nEach Wednesday we turn our 10-ton hearthstone deck oven up to 11 and turn out some amazing artisan pizzas. It’s a somewhat exclusive affair since our capacity is limited—and we regularly sell out. We’re a bakery after all—not a pizzeria. There’s no assembly line or tunnel baking. Each pizza is created by hand and served with a healthy dose of love. No delivery\, sorry. \nOur pizzas are crafted in the same farm-to-oven tradition as our baked goods. We use California-grown and -milled premium flour\, 15% organic whole grains\, and a long-fermentation\, 100% naturally leavened formula—resulting in a really tasty and bubbly crust. And we use only the best ingredients and toppings\, with produce we like to source at the Davis Farmers Market. \nThere’s only one size—about 14 inches in diameter—and six slices. They generally serve one to three humans\, depending on appetite. We also offer big\, sharable garden salads\, local beer & wine\, soft drinks\, and amazing desserts.

SUMMARY:Nigel Wearne Live
DESCRIPTION:Nigel Wearne saunters after dark in the music of the night\, blending blues\, jazz and Americana-noir. Hailing from Gunditjmara country in the deep south of Australia\, he’s a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist with diverse influences such as Nick Cave\, Tom Waits and Rickie Lee Jones. \nNigel has played some of the world’s most prestigious music festivals\, including Hardly Strictly Bluegrass\, MerleFest\, Philadelphia Folk Festival\, Adelaide Guitar Festival (AUS)\, 30A Songwriters Festival\, Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion and the Cambridge Folk Festival (UK). In 2025\, he won the Telluride Blues Challenge at the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival. \nHis sophomore album\, ‘Black Crow’ garnered wide critical acclaim including a 4-STAR review in Rolling Stone\, a nomination for Best Country Album at the Music Victoria Awards and it debuted at #1 on Australia’s AMRAP Charts. His 2023 album\, ‘The Reckoning’ received back-to-back nominations for Best Blues Work at the 2023 & 2024 Music Victoria Awards and a 4-STAR review in The Australian. 2025 marked a return to his roots as a folk songwriter with his latest album ‘The Lone Reckoning’. A raw\, emotive\, stripped back rendition of his 2023 award-nominated album ‘The Reckoning’. \nA deep thinker and truth seeker with a penchant for all things peculiar\, he sings of human frailty\, grace and the cosmos; songwriting that cuts to the bone. “Django Reinhardt with a cowboy twist” – Grateful Web UK. “Tailor made for fans of Tom Waits” – Rhythms Magazine. “Poignant and mysterious” – Maverick Magazine UK. “Vocal swagger of Van Morrison and dark spirituality and intelligence of Nick Cave” 4 STARS – The Australian. \n  \n
