SUMMARY:New Paintings by Pat Mahony
DESCRIPTION:The John Natsoulas Gallery is proud to present the newest exhibition of paintings by Sacramento-based artist\, Pat Mahony. The works in her exhibition\, all created within the last year\, are representative of her travels throughout California and to Hawaii. She captures endemic and tropical vegetation in her iconic\, impressionistic style.  \nPat Mahony’s natural environment serves as her greatest source of inspiration. She transforms the beauty of the world\, and the “perfect chaos” that signifies the ever-changing impressions imparted by the way that light can alter a moment. She is known for successfully matching the “wildness of nature with a wild and physical application of paint.” Pat Mahony was born in Southern California\, and studied printmaking and oil painting at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. During the 1980s\, she primarily showed her watercolors\, many of which were architectural scenes. After her early painting successes\, she took some time off to pursue other endeavors. Her desire to return to oil painting coincided with her move to a rural property along the Sacramento River. The resulting landscape paintings that she produced over the successive years were large-scale in format and were a strong representation of that land. Her later works\, painted after she relocated to the region near the American River\, became more focused on individual components within nature\, as she went on long walks along the river. She has achieved minute detail within her painting\, utilizing the scale to emphasize particular elements.  \nIn this exhibition she explores scale across multiple canvases\, creating a diptych and a quadriptych\, allowing for greater immersion and artistic presence. Mahony can best be categorized as a colorist\, with a style derived from the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists\, which is well suited for capturing the fleeting moments that begin and end in such rapid succession in the natural world. Her paintings are a balance between abstraction and representation. Immortalizing the vibrancy of the Sacramento Valley natural environment is key to her work\, and her dazzling painting captures the beauty of the beloved flora and landscape she calls home.  \nThe exhibition’s opening reception is to be held on Saturday\, May 30 from 7:00-9:00 PM. It will feature live music and refreshments. All are well\, and the event is free! \n

SUMMARY:60 Years of Mark Bulwinkle
DESCRIPTION:The John Natsoulas Gallery is proud to announce a major retrospective exhibition of the work of acclaimed Funk artist Mark Bulwinkle\, opening June 2026. Spanning two floors of the gallery\, this landmark exhibition will survey six decades of the artist’s prolific career and explore the full breadth of his creative practice. \nThis exhibition\, the first to consider every aspect of the artist’s significant career\, will address Mark Bulwinkle’s interests in printmaking\, ceramics\, and metal sculpture. His distinctive artworks will be accompanied by an array of archival materials – photographs\, publications\, and ephemera – that all highlight his expansive body of work. The exhibition will follow a chronological arc\, presenting his earliest forays into printmaking and ceramics and to his later development into one of the most well-known metal sculptors of today. The organization of the exhibition will highlight his place alongside fellow artists who also pioneered West Coast art movements. \nMark Bulwinkle (b. 1946) was born in Massachusetts and he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a BFA in 1968. As an anti-war proponent\, he naturally gravitated toward the counterculture ideals of the West Coast\, where he delved into the Funk Movement and the Hippy Art scene. After completing an MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in printmaking he also attended the San Francisco John O’Connell Trade School to study industrial welding. From there\, he used those skills as a shipbuilder at Bethlehem Ship Yards for over a decade. In 1987\, he became a full time artist\, combining his knowledge of printmaking with welding to create torch-cut metal cutouts. As pioneer of this medium\, Bulwinkle quickly gained international notoriety\, and he showed in museums and galleries across the world. National publication also covered the transformation of his own property as a sculpture-filled landmark he called the eponymous “Bulwinkleland\,” earning him a larger-than-life reputation for the bizarre. Many have imitated his techniques and style\, but no one marches his singular ability to blend humor\, provocation\, and technical mastery. Today\, Bulwinkle remains a vital force in contemporary art\, producing prints\, sculptures\, and ceramics that challenge convention and celebrate the absurd. \n“Close friends and fellow artists have remarked that Mark does not make art. He makes Bulwinkles.” \nThe exhibition’s opening reception is to be held to coincide with the Downtown Davis 2nd Friday ArtAbout on July 10 from 7:00-9:00 PM. It will feature live music and refreshments.

SUMMARY:Pizza Night
DESCRIPTION:It’s pizza night at Upper Crust Bakery!\n\n\n\n\n\nHow Pizza Night Works\n\n\nPizza Night is Wednesdays at our Davis location only. We’ll start in Winters soon.\nWe generally do not take walk-ins—please pre-order your pizza!\nPlace your order early! We often sell out.\nWe make a limited number of pizzas each half-hour. If your 1st choice of pick-up time is sold out\, try an alternate time slot.\nOrders close at noon Wednesday or when we sell out\, whatever comes first.\nYou can get desserts\, baked goods\, beverages\, beer & wine when you pick up your pizza.\nHaving trouble ordering? Call (530) 750-1180.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Pizza Night\n\n\nEach Wednesday we turn our 10-ton hearthstone deck oven up to 11 and turn out some amazing artisan pizzas. It’s a somewhat exclusive affair since our capacity is limited—and we regularly sell out. We’re a bakery after all—not a pizzeria. There’s no assembly line or tunnel baking. Each pizza is created by hand and served with a healthy dose of love. No delivery\, sorry. \nOur pizzas are crafted in the same farm-to-oven tradition as our baked goods. We use California-grown and -milled premium flour\, 15% organic whole grains\, and a long-fermentation\, 100% naturally leavened formula—resulting in a really tasty and bubbly crust. And we use only the best ingredients and toppings\, with produce we like to source at the Davis Farmers Market. \nThere’s only one size—about 14 inches in diameter—and six slices. They generally serve one to three humans\, depending on appetite. We also offer big\, sharable garden salads\, local beer & wine\, soft drinks\, and amazing desserts.
