SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Funk Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis\, California for the\nupcoming\, captivating exhibition California Funk to Figuration: A New\nNarrative Mythology. The exhibition will be open from September 7 to\nJanuary 7\, 2022. The opening reception is on September 9\, and will\nfeature live music and free beverages. \nThis exhibition will feature works by the incredible men and women who shaped the Funk\nMovement. Through their artworks\, including painting\, sculpture\, and works on paper\, Funk\nartists consciously undermine expectations. The colorful works all playfully address narrative\nthemes\, some more enigmatic than others. \nFunk Art organically emerged in the 1960s in the leading art schools in California as a rebellious\nresponse to both the restrictiveness of Bay Area Figurative Art and the nonobjectivity of Abstract\nExpressionism. While Funk Art has continued to elude a decisive definition\, its hallmark is a\nsignificant degree of absurdity. Artists famously responded\, “when you see it\, you know it\,”\nwhen asked to describe the movement.\nThose championing the ridiculousness that is the fundamental doctrine of Funk are known for\ntheir collaborations and the impressive followings that they inspired among their students. Some\nof the artists whose works will be on display include Roy De Forest\, Robert Arneson\, Peter Saul\,\nRobert Colescott\, David Gilhooly\, Louise Stanely\, Patrick Siler\, Jim Albertson\, Gladyss\nNielsson\, Jim Nutt and many more. The Funk Movement is often categorized as a West Coast art\nstyle\, but this show will bring together artists from California and the other major center of the\nstyle- Chicago. This exhibition will highlight the shared philosophies of different generations of\nartists\, who all imbued their works with unorthodox tradition and self-referential humor. \nCome visit the John Natsoulas Gallery for the very exciting opportunity to see historic artwork\nthat truly captures the energy and absurdism of the Funk Movement.

SUMMARY:“Colorscapes” Exhibit Reception at The Artery
DESCRIPTION:Colorscapes\, Photography by Anne Miller\n \nExhibit Dates: Sept. 2–26\, 2022 \nArtist Reception: Sept. 9 from 7–9 pm \nPhotos:  Concrete #18 and Rust #53 \nThe Artery presents Anne Miller’s “Colorscapes” collection—her exciting response to the mysterious beauty of commonplace things. Anne’s photographs transform extracts of the everyday world into an explosion of abstract color. \nDrawing upon her interest in music\, technology\, and photography\, Anne reimagines human-made objects and natural materials. Isolated in her camera’s viewfinder\, the ordinary world comes alive\, prompting fanciful stories about creatures\, people\, or otherworldly landscapes. Anne refines these images in the digital darkroom\, adjusting light\, color\, and composition to highlight the elements that originally spoke to her heart and imagination. \nAnne invites people to take a personal excursion as they view her photographs.  The mystery of the literal subject is a puzzle to solve\, but each person can also discover their own story or emotional response. \nThe Artery at 207 G Street\, Davis\, CA is open seven days a week. \nMon–Sat: 10 am – 6 pm.\nSun: 12–5 pm. \nThe Artery will be open from 7–9 pm on Sept. 9 for the reception of Colorscapes\, Photography by Anne Miller. This coincides with the Davis Second Friday ArtAbout.
