SUMMARY:Marguerite Schaffron and Bunny Cunningham Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Gallery 1855 November Artists! Monday through Friday 8am – 3pm \nArtist Statement for Marguerite: \nDuring my walks in nature\, I often see people and creatures. The Mind’s Eye are a “reflection” of this blending – that of humanity and nature. Using the mylars reflections\, I photograph how nature and individual(s) merge into one. Neither distinct – a single\, unified being. In my sculpture\, I recycle items from Mother Nature. I strive to transform the objects into thought provoking\, sometimes whimsical\, assemblages. Please enjoy & let your imagination flow. \nArtist Statement for Bunny: \nFor me\, the artistic process is always an invitation to challenge myself and recreate. I find my surroundings as a constant and unlimited source of design inspiration. I am a free spirit who is constantly seeking the next thrill to challenge me. \n

The talk is organized by The California Studio and co-sponsored by the Department of Art and Art History\, East Asian Studies and Global Affairs. \nWHEN: Tuesday\, Nov. 1\, 2022 at 4:30p. \nWHERE: Main Theatre\, Wright Hall \nSponsored by UC Davis College of Letters and Science\, UC Davis Global Affairs\, and the UC Davis departments of Art and Art History\, Cinema and Digital Media\, East Asian Studies\, and East Asian Languages and Cultures.

SUMMARY:Robert Arneson 30 Year Memorial Exhibit at Natsoulas
DESCRIPTION:The John Natsoulas Gallery is proud to present a new exhibition in honor of Robert Arneson (Sept. 4\, 1930 – Nov. 2\, 1992). Commemorating the 30-year anniversary of the passing of the great artist\, this show will offer visitors the chance to see amazing sculptures and works on paper by this artist who shaped the art of Northern California. Along with a stellar faculty at UC Davis\, Arneson established the world-renowned TB-9 studio space and resultantly founded one of the most ground-breaking ceramic departments in the world. \nArneson was born in Benicia\, California. He graduated from Benicia High School and spent much of his early life as a cartoonist for a local paper. He studied at California College of the Arts in Oakland for his BFA and went on to receive a MFA from Mills College in 1958. In the early 1960s\, Arneson and several other California artists began to abandon the traditional manufacture of functional ceramic objects and instead began to make nonfunctional sculptures that made confrontational\, political\, and social statements. The new movement was dubbed as Funk Art\, and Arneson is considered the father of the ceramic Funk movement. \nThe John Natsoulas Gallery makes a special note that Arneson was deeply involved with the inception of the gallery and it maintains profound admiration and respect for the community that continues on in Arneson’s stead.

SUMMARY:Don’t Fence Me In: Paintings by Jan Walker
DESCRIPTION:Jan Walker’s paintings celebrate the beauty and freedom of the wild horses who roam the Western states. As an artist\, she is deeply inspired by their strength\, and the bonds that they form with different generations of their herd. As she writes of their strong connection to the land\, “They are as equally of the wild as they are the wild itself.” The current plight of wild horses is tied to ongoing threats from the cattle industry\, who lobby efforts by the federal government to cull and confine the herds. A portion of the sales from her paintings will be donated to organizations that promote the humane treatment of wild horses. \nExhibit dates: November 4-27\, 2022\nReception: Friday\, November 11\, 6-9 PM (free)\nAddress: Pence Gallery – 212 D St\, Davis\, CA 95616 \nImage: Jan Walker\, “Welcome Back”

SUMMARY:Approaching Exit Images in Byzantium: A Case Study from Cyprus
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Magdalene Breidenthal will share her research in a public lecture titled “Approaching Exit Images in Byzantium: A Case Study from Cyprus.”\n\nBreidenthal\, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies at Princeton University\, examines the ”exit image” as an essential art historical category in the study of Byzantine church decoration and sacred space. When viewers entered a church adorned with paintings and/or mosaics\, they were afforded changing views of holy scenes and figures as they moved throughout the interior—even as they left the building. Visual and textual sources show that eschatological\, theophanic\, and hagiographical imagery was often prominently displayed around exit doorways. Breidenthal’s research considers how the subject matter\, composition\, and placement of such images at the threshold would have engaged the sensory and metaphorical aspects of exodos (“going out”). \nWHERE: Everson 157 \n[Credit: South door\, Panagia tuo Araka\, Lagoudera\, Cypress. SUMMARY:Logos Books: Reception for Sarah Hedriana’s “Modern Traditionalist Quilter”
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Hedriana\, “Modern Traditionalist Quilter” \nExhibit Dates: Oct. 29–Dec. 2\nReception Date: Nov. 11\, 6–8p\nLocation: Logos Books\, 513 Second St.\, Davis\, CA\, 95616 \nLight refreshments will be available. \nSarah Hedriana is a modern traditionalist quilter whose work is inspired by the beautiful landscapes\, farms\, and orchards of Northern California. She designs\, creates\, and sells quilted wall hangings\, table runners\, pillows covers\, throws\, and bed quilts. Sarah pieces her quilts so that she can run them through a washer and dryer in order to develop crinkles that add depth and texture. The pieces are a combination of cotton batting\, cotton thread\, and cotton and linen fabric. \nDuring her childhood in Indiana\, Sarah’s mother created a beautiful and welcoming home by sewing napkins\, table coverings\, and cushions. When Sarah had a family of her own\, she decided to learn to sew in order to recreate the cozy atmosphere of her youth. This led her to discover the joy of quilting. With the loving support of her husband Herman\, Sarah has been able to work full-time on creating quilts and sharing them with others. She recently started working with Coyuchi\, an organic home textiles company based in Point Reyes Station. She currently sells her wares at the Davis Farmers Market. \n“My hope is to inspire conversation about what makes something a quilt\,” she says. “People tend to think of a quilt as a bedcover but it can be many more things.” \nYou can reach Hedriana by phone at 530-219-5331 or by email at shedriana@gmail.com. You can also visit her website [shedrianaquilts.smugmug.com] or Instagram [@sarahhedrianaquilts].

SUMMARY:Pence Gallery: 2nd Friday ArtAbout!
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Pence Gallery for our 2nd Friday ArtAbout reception on November 11\, 6-9 PM (free admission). This is the opening reception for Jan Walker’s exhibit and our annual Holiday Market. \n  \nDon’t Fence Me In: Paintings by Jan Walker \nNov. 4 – 27\, 2022 \nDon’t Fence Me In celebrates the beauty and freedom of the wild horses who roam the Western states. As an artist\, Jan Walker is deeply inspired by their strength\, and the bonds that they form with different generations of their herd. The current plight of wild horses is tied to ongoing threats from the cattle industry\, who lobby efforts by the federal government to cull and confine the herds. A portion of the sales from her paintings will be donated to organizations that promote the humane treatment of wild horses.  \n  \nInterwoven \nOct. 11 – Nov. 27\, 2022 \nInterwoven is an exhibit by a group of artists who have been meeting for several years to pursue shared questions of making art in our time. The exhibit includes a variety of media\, including painting\, collage\, photography\, and sculpture\, and approaches to artistic expression. Participating artists include Lynn Beldner\, Joan Jarvis\, Hannah Klaus Hunter\, Rachel Kline\, Jamie Madison\, Edith Sauer Polonik\, Sara Post\, and Binuta Sudhakaran. \n  \nHoliday Market \nNov. 11 – Dec. 24\, 2022 \nThe Pence’s annual Holiday Market is the perfect place to shop for one-of-a-kind gifts! We will have fun soaps and lotions\, candles\, scarves\, hats\, and original works of art. Enjoy a cache of rare vintage jewelry as well! Complete your holiday shopping while also supporting local artists with your purchase. Pence Members always receive 10% off purchases in Holiday Market. \n  \n— \n  \nBrowse our exhibits and gift shop\, and explore other art venues in Downtown Davis. We will have printed ArtAbout maps available that night for your self-guided artwalk. Follow the 2nd Friday ArtAbout Facebook page for more information:  https://www.facebook.com/davisartabout. \n  \nImages: Jan Walker\, “First Light”; Holiday Market 2021; Hannah Hunter\, “Navigation 9”

SUMMARY:Artery: “Cuteware” Musical Reception
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Heidi Bekebrede’s playful and vibrant Cuteware exhibit at The Artery with a musical reception on Nov. 11 from 7–9p. \nThe show will include Cuteware vases\, bowls\, cookie jars\, and paintings\, as well as Heidi’s unique acrylic paintings which incorporate Cuteware ceramic elements. \nHeidi is known for her tiny ceramic objects which embrace colorful nature—birds\, butterflies\, flowers\, sunshine\, and adorable animals. For this show\, she also includes several larger\, more complicated Cuteware creations. These were thrown in parts\, then stacked and assembled. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 19 paintings in the show are playful and vibrant. They echo Heidi’s earliest work at The Artery (member since 1988) which also combined painting and ceramics.  You won’t want to miss the musical reception. Heidi will be singing her original songs about her work\, the painting process\, and The Artery. Dianna Craig and Nick Carvajal will back up Heidi with voice and guitars. \nYou can view Heidi’s exhibit now through Nov. 20 at The Artery.
