SUMMARY:Robert Arneson 30 Year Memorial Exhibit at Natsoulas
DESCRIPTION:The John Natsoulas Gallery is proud to present a new exhibition in honor of Robert Arneson (Sept. 4\, 1930 – Nov. 2\, 1992). Commemorating the 30-year anniversary of the passing of the great artist\, this show will offer visitors the chance to see amazing sculptures and works on paper by this artist who shaped the art of Northern California. Along with a stellar faculty at UC Davis\, Arneson established the world-renowned TB-9 studio space and resultantly founded one of the most ground-breaking ceramic departments in the world. \nArneson was born in Benicia\, California. He graduated from Benicia High School and spent much of his early life as a cartoonist for a local paper. He studied at California College of the Arts in Oakland for his BFA and went on to receive a MFA from Mills College in 1958. In the early 1960s\, Arneson and several other California artists began to abandon the traditional manufacture of functional ceramic objects and instead began to make nonfunctional sculptures that made confrontational\, political\, and social statements. The new movement was dubbed as Funk Art\, and Arneson is considered the father of the ceramic Funk movement. \nThe John Natsoulas Gallery makes a special note that Arneson was deeply involved with the inception of the gallery and it maintains profound admiration and respect for the community that continues on in Arneson’s stead.

SUMMARY:Artist lecture with Tarrah Krajnak
DESCRIPTION:Tarrah Krajnak (b. 1979) was born in Lima\, Peru. Her photographs are in collections including the Centre Pompidou and Museum Ludwig. Her book El Jardín De Senderos Que Se Bifurcan (2021) was named to the Museum of Modern Art’s inaugural list of 10 photo books of the year. Her work has been published and reviewed in Aperture\, Artforum and New York Review of Books. Krajnak is represented by Galerie Thomas Zander\, Cologne\, Germany\, and she has received fellowships from the George and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation and the Lewis Baltz Research Fund Award. She is an assistant professor of art at the University of Oregon\, and living on the unceded territory of the Kalapuya. \nOrganized by the Department of Art and Art History and supported by the U.C. Davis College of Letters and Science. Co-sponsored by the Manetti Shrem Museum.

SUMMARY:Flights of Fancy: Sculpture by Steven McGovney
DESCRIPTION:In December\, the Pence will have a new exhibit featuring work by Steven McGovney. He has worked in multiple media\, but McGovney’s current concentration is on the sculptural side of ceramics. The artist uses clay\, steel wire\, and acrylic and oil paint to bring his animal and figurative work to life. \nMcGovney’s art merges a surreal side of nature with his love of movement. Birds painted in bright colors are outfitted with shoes and clothing. As he admits\, his sculptures at the Pence are truly “imaginary birds inspired by the wacky names of birds themselves.” They totter on long legs\, giving a sense of whimsical action. Between raising her family and a demanding career in business\, including nearly 25 years with UC Davis\, she found little time for hobbies. While preparing for retirement she felt a need to find a creative outlet. She engaged with various classes and activities but found no passion. She was always interested in colorful abstract art so she began watching YouTube videos on painting shortly before retiring in July 2020. She tried her first painting in January 2021 and was hooked. The timing was fortuitous because painting made her homebound existence during the depths of the pandemic much more rewarding.   \nBunch’s first artistic foray involved experimenting with fluid acrylic pour painting on canvas and tile. Paint is mixed or applied directly to the surface and then manipulated using different techniques to create original abstract work. Bunch notes\, “This type of painting is an easy way for those new to painting to express themselves and have fun.” \nThis is Bunch’s first opportunity to exhibit her work.
