SUMMARY:Tiny Show
DESCRIPTION:The Tiny Show in years past has been a community favorite with Pence staff\, members\, and visitors. Continuing in the spirit of our last Tiny Show\, which was held in 2017\, this exhibit features “tiny” works of art – modest-sized pieces limited to 5” x 7”. Various local and regional artists were invited to display their small but spectacular creations\, including Valentina Arenas\, Tamsen Armstrong\, Karen Burns\, Deziree Dizon\, Jim Darke\, and Amy Vidra\, among many others.  \nRanging from serious to whimsical\, the works of these artists challenge viewers to stop for a moment and really take the time to look closer. Their works are personal\, intimate\, and brimming with the tiniest of details\, including stitched red thread\, shadows cast by leaves\, and the barely-there whiskers of a playful possum. We encourage you to explore every work of art and see what details you can discover. While the works themselves may be small\, the creativity and artistic talent they reveal is immeasurable.  \n  \nExhibit dates: January 6 – February 26\, 2023 \nReception: Friday\, January 13\, 6 – 9 PM (free) \nAddress: Pence Gallery – 212 D Street\, Davis\, CA 95616 \nHours: 11:30 AM – 5 PM\, Tuesday – Sunday (closed Mondays) \n  \nImage: V. SUMMARY:The Elusive Muse: New Work by Kelley Mogilka
DESCRIPTION:Kelley Mogilka’s figurative paintings and drawings center on capturing the elusive muse\, a creative force that flows from brush to canvas. By working from a model\, she looks for this inspiration in the subtle gestures\, glances\, or poses\, which often evoke a presence that is both timeless and ephemeral. Her use of harmonious color and expressive brushwork ultimately reflects an interest in capturing the sitter’s internal state of being. Mogilka was the recipient of the Pence Gallery’s Emerging Artist Award in 2022. \n  \nThe Elusive Muse: New Work by Kelley Mogilka \nExhibit dates: January 7 – February 3\, 2023 \nReception: Friday\, January 13\, 6 – 9 PM \nAddress: Pence Gallery – 212 D Street\, Davis\, CA 95616 \n  \nArtist Talk & Demo: \nSaturday\, January 14\, 1-2 PM (FREE) \nKelley Mogilka will talk about her current series of paintings\, sharing her method of working from models to compose her evocative subjects.  \n  \nSponsored by James R. & Suzette M. Smith\, as part of the Pence Gallery Emerging Artist Award.

SUMMARY:Mark Bulwinkle: A Retrospective Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Known for his manic steel silhouettes of dog-faced flowers and perverse\, joyful figures with\nelectrified grins\, Mark Bulwinkle’s nutty artwork can be spotted across the Pacific coast\, displayed\nproudly in windows\, overgrown gardens\, and small businesses. Bulwinkle’s graphically cut steel\npropelled him into fame\, influencing the creation of Burning Man in the 1980s and even leading him\nto reject an interview with Oprah in 1991. However\, lesser known but equally impressive is his\nextensive work in diverse media: ceramics\, silkscreen\, papier-mache\, and even digital illustration. His\nmastery acquired from 100-hour work weeks as a ship welder for Bethlehem Steel was important to\nthe development of his cut steel works\, but equally key was his early training as a skilled printmaker\nand graphic artist. Bulwinkle received an MFA in Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute\nin 1974\, making hundreds of fabulously intricate industrial enamel silkscreens and woodcuts. In\nthese early years\, he also learned ceramic slipcasting techniques from the renowned trompe l’oeil\nartist Richard Shaw. \nThis retrospective exhibition showcases Bulwinkle’s mastery of color and form in both two\nand three dimensions throughout the last 5 decades\, tracing the development of his art through\ndiverse materials and revealing the stories embedded in his work. On display are a selection of his\nwoodcuts and screen prints\, including several gorgeous prints from his time at the San Francisco Art\nInstitute. Bulwinkle’s flamboyant ceramic works from graduate school will also be featured\, as well\nas papier-mache works that once decorated the walls of his iconic Manilla St. House\, a towering steel\nassemblage sculpture built around a modest townhouse that became a landmark in Oakland from\n1975-1991. Recent cut steel works painted with colorful enamel will also be featured\, which are often\nimitated but unmistakably Bulwinkle’s. \n  \nThe John Natsoulas Gallery is delighted to exhibit half a century of works from this rather singular artist.In\naddition\, we are overjoyed to present “Freedumb\,” our brand new 18-foot steel piece by Mark Bulwinkle\, installed on\nthe gallery façade. \n  \n[IMAGE: \nMark Bulwinkle \nThe Future is Not Ours To See\, 1973\, Industrial synthetic enamel silkscreen\, 20” x 30”]

SUMMARY:Meet the Artist: Cate Dayan
DESCRIPTION:Meet artist Cate Dayan at Super Owl Breweing\, Saturday Feb 4\, 5–7pm. \nDescription of Work:\nDuring the darkest times of the pandemic\, while sequestered in her house\, local artist Cate Dayan kept her traveling spirit contented by bringing the world into her home by way of her paintings. During isolation\, Dayan filled her walls with bright colors of beloved places (both local and distant) to quench her adventurous heart. You Only Live Once\, Yolo is a love note to her beloved community- a reminder to live life to the fullest whenever and wherever possible\, and to consider our big colorful world\, while taking direct action “painting” local change in our own home-community. \nIn 2020\, Cate Dayan\, along with teachers around the world\, turned her multi-sensorial “living” classroom into two-dimensional digital environments- websites and zoom meetings. Interactions with her students and the world around her took on a new\, flat reality\, leaving distant memories of energetic children laughing unrestricted by slow internet connections to haunt her. To counter the surrealness of these virtual schooldays\, Dayan mixed paint\, played with texture\, and engaged with an alternate form of two-dimensional reality. By playing with shadows\, reflections\, and light\, Dayan depicted the greater three-dimensional world she longed for\, giving new life and cheer to the dark times\, the disconnected times\, the “poor-connection” times. \nArtist Bio: \nCate Dayan is a Davis teacher-an educator of young children. She is also an artist – a painter. In her classroom\, she spends hours cultivating\, imagining\, visualizing\, inspiring\, creating\, and nurturing the children in her care. In the studio\, she layers color on canvas. As a learning community\, she and her students strive to incorporate art into all subjects\, adding richness\, color\, texture\, and a deeper meaning to their learning. On canvas\, Dayan strives to bring forth life\, movement\, and light. Teaching is an emotional job\, a sensorially rich career. It is a profession of continued reflection\, re-examination\, re-thinking\, and re-working. Like a new canvas\, each new school year holds endless possibilities. Learning communities\, like paintings\, are unique\, each with their own novel colors- interacting\, playing with\, and disagreeing with one another. Paintings and classes each possess their own beauty and their unique challenges. Dayan brings her ever-growing experience and developing techniques to her students and paintings alike. \nDrawing inspiration from the confident\, direct\, and bold lines of David Hockney\, the colors whimsically conjured by Wayne Thiebaud\, and the strength and power of Melissa Chandon’s iconic imagery\, in her Northern California home in Davis\, mere miles from the two-room country schoolhouse in which she teaches\, Cate Dayan paints.
