SUMMARY:Women of Northern California: Making Meaning for Yesterday\, Today\, & Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:About\nThe John Natsoulas Gallery is pleased to announce that\, coinciding with Women’s History Month\, we will be hosting an exhibition entitled Women of Northern California: Making Meaning for Yesterday\, Today\, and Tomorrow. This exceptional exhibit will showcase how women have and continue to develop unique artistic visions that derive from the varied social\, political\, and cultural experiences that are endemic to this particular region. Northern California is a unique nexus of influences\, and the women who are a product of this environment have drawn from diverse sources of inspiration. \nThis exhibition and the accompanying publication will contribute to the overdue recognition of many of these outstanding artists. While women have played a crucial role in building the regional artistic community and have pushed art making in new directions\, their persisting exclusion from the artistic canon is an issue that needs correcting. This exhibit is a celebration of the strong\, influential women who have led the way in establishing and developing artistic movements and media. It will also offer the opportunity to explore the many ways in which these artists have contextualized and represent their experiences living as women in Northern California. Through this examination of both historic and contemporary art\, the collection of art will highlight the tenacity of the artistic legacies that women establish\, often for other women. By looking at the past and present\, we aim to reveal the vision of the future. \nFeatured Artists\nSalma Arastu\, Joan Brown\, Squeak Carnwath\, Julia Couzens\, Jay DeFeo\, Allison Fall\, Viola Frey\, Kim Frohsin\, Franceska Gamez\, Michelle Gregor\, Lynn Hershman Leeson\, Laura Hohlwein\, Mildred Howard\, Margaret Keelan\, Sahar Khoury\, Marilyn Levine\, Hung Liu\, Pat Mahony\, Kara Maria\, Klea McKenna\, Jenna Meacham\, Michelle Murillo\, Deborah Oropallo\, Emmy Lou Packard\, Lucy Puls\, Rachelle Reichert\, Lisa Reinertson\, M. Louise Stanley\, and Seongmin Yoo \nThe opening reception for the exhibition will be on Saturday March 4 from 7:00 – 9:00pm. There will be refreshments and a performance by one of the featured artists – Allison Fall. Come enjoy a night to celebrate seven decades of art by Northern California’s most notable women artists.  \n  \nHours\nWed: 11am – 5pm\nThurs: 11am – 5pm\nFri: 11am – 9pm\nSat-Sun: 12 – 5pm \nCurated by Sarah Poisner

SUMMARY:Art by Cathi Newlin & Toni Rizzo
DESCRIPTION:The Pence Gallery unites the fantastic work of painter Toni Rizzo and sculptor Cathi Newlin in a new joint exhibit. Toni Rizzo is a painter from Davis and the owner of the local art business\, Artiful World. Her signature style combines serene and psychedelic backgrounds with high realism portraiture. Featuring everything from wild animals to household furniture\, her work has a surreal\, timeless quality that evokes a feeling of ‘home.’ Cathi Newlin is a ceramic artist who lives in Sacramento. Over ten years ago\, she transitioned from doing functional pottery to making sculptural ceramics. While some may remember her expressive imaginary creatures on display in the Pence gift shop\, she also uses real animals\, perhaps inspired by her time as a zookeeper\, as the theme of her creative work. \n  \nBoth artists have a light-hearted\, playful take on artmaking that leads them to explore imagery full of fantasy\, surrealism\, or comedic exaggeration. We invite you to enjoy the exhibit upstairs in our Andresen Learning Center gallery at the Pence. \n  \nExhibit dates: March 3 – April 30\, 2023 \nReception: Friday\, March 10\, 6 – 9 PM (free admission) \nAddress: Pence Gallery | 212 D Street\, Davis\, CA 95616 \nGallery hours: 11:30 AM – 5 PM\, Tuesday – Sunday (closed Mondays) \n  \nImage: C. SUMMARY:Patti Warashina: Ceramics Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Patti Warashina: Ceramics Exhibition\n\nApril 5 @ 8:00 am – 5:00 pm\n  \n\nThe human figure has fascinated ceramic sculptor Patti Warashina for most of her 55+ year art career. Her sustaining interest in the human figure is likely due to the fact that her own body is the closest resource from which she draws her ideas. The use of the body gives affirmation to Warashina’s own daily existence\, and serves as the subject of her own “visual diary” which\, for Warashina\, is a reminder\, reflection\, and observation of personal time and the civilization in which she lives. Warashina draws from her daily life and has an abnormal interest in the absurdity and foibles of human behavior\, in which her figures have become the actors in her introspective narratives. \n  \nArtist Biography\nPatti Warashina (born 1940) is an American artist known for her imaginative ceramic sculptures. Her works are in the collection of the Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\, National Museum of Modern Art\, Kyoto\, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. \nShe was instrumental in bringing the Seattle ceramic scene to prominence\, heading up the department at the University of Washington\, Seattle\, as well as producing pieces that took inspiration from the Funk movement in the Bay area but with their own interpretations. Patti Warashina is best known for her figurative sculpture – pieces that tell stories which are often dreamlike or fantasies – and ranging in size from very small to larger-than-life. She works in low-fire polychrome ceramics\, the colors and surface decoration both vivid and animated. While her primarily female figures clearly emerge from her own experiences\, Warashina says\, “They aren’t me exactly\, or any version of me….they represent what I know and what I’m curious about. When I’m curious about something else\, I’ll move on.” \nStatement from Patti Warashina\n“The human figure has been an absorbing visual fascination in my work. I use the figure in voyeuristic situations in which irony\, humor\, absurdities portray human behavior as a relief from society’s pressure and frustrations on mankind. At times\, I use the figure in complex arrangements so that it will be seethingly alive. I like the visual stimulation of portraying human energy\, as a way to compare it to any biological organization found in nature.” \nCome visit the John Natsoulas Gallery to see fabulous sculptures by this fascinating artist.
