SUMMARY:Woodland Community College Student Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Now showing Woodland Community College Student Showcase\, featuring a group exhibition of the WCC Kingsley Merit Scholarship finalists along with the work of students from the Woodland Community College art program. \nThe student artists and their professor\, Manuel Fernando Rios\, will be attending the opening reception\, 5:30-8:00 pm\, coinciding with the downtown Woodland First Friday event. Light refreshments will be available. An award presentation for the artists will begin at 6:30 p.m. \nEach year Sacramento’s Kingsley Art Club sponsors an awards program to support emerging art students from community colleges in the Sacramento region. The visual arts faculty at each of the colleges selects one outstanding student to be recognized and receive the $600 monetary award. \nSelected as the 2023 scholarship merit award winner from Woodland Community College is Daniel Zapata-Kraft for his painting\, Seed of Evil\, currently on exhibit at the Crocker Art Museum. \nFive students applied for the Kingsley Merit award: A. A.\,Carol Butzbach\, Andres Marquez\, Joey Sable\, and Daniel Zapata-Kraft. The Gallery 625 exhibition will feature the work of these five students\, along with the art work of Maria Del Carmen Reyes Fabian\, Ridley Silva\, Acacia Sisneros\, Gricelda Vargas\, and Kaitlyn Wright\, all students in the WCC art department. \nManuel Fernando Rios\, the college’s first full time art professor in over a decade\, said\, “Adding WCC to the Kingsley Merit Scholarship Awards was one of my top priorities when I was hired\, along with finding additional opportunities for students to showcase their work to cultivate and help grow the art community in Woodland.” According to Rios\, “Having students exhibit their work at venues such as Gallery 625 is one of the most rewarding feelings an art professor can have.” \nThe artwork can also be viewed online at yoloarts.org/online-galleries. \nThe Woodland Community College Student Showcase continues at Gallery 625 through August 1\, 2023. \nGallery 625 hosts exhibitions and receptions every other month. New exhibitions typically open on the first Fridays of February\, April\, June\, August\, October\, and December. \nGallery 625 is located at 625 Court Street in Woodland\, in Yolo County’s Erwin Meier Administration building and is open Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. For more information\, contact YoloArts at 530-309-6464. \nImage Credits: \nA.A.\, Peace for an Everlasting Future\, Print on Archival Paper\, 2023\, 8 x 10 inches

SUMMARY:Sayako Dairiki: Mended Memories
DESCRIPTION:Sayako Dairiki: Mended Memories \nExhibit dates: June 27 – August 20\, 2023 \nReception: Friday\, July 14\, 6 – 9 PM \nArtist Talk: Saturday\, August 5\, 2 – 3 PM (FREE) \nSayako Dairiki approaches painting with a focus on mindfulness. Following her adoption of sashiko or visible mending to fix holes in several of her garments and blankets\, Sayako began to echo the stitching pattern on canvas. Sashiko is a traditional Japanese mending technique practiced for centuries\, in which repeated stitching in geometric shapes or lines was done to strengthen fabrics and to ward off costly future repairs. At home during the pandemic and unable to visit her native Japan\, she began to repair holes with this technique\, as well as using patches from vintage kimonos. In the process\, the artist began to see connections to different generations of her family\, and how ‘mending’ was a metaphor for healing and reconnecting with others.  \nSponsored by Tom Doyle & Kathy Joseph \nImage: Dairiki\, “For the Words She Couldn’t Say” \n  \n

SUMMARY:Artist reception: Christine Shackel
DESCRIPTION:Raised in southern California\, Shackel attended university at Holy Names University (Oakland\, CA) where she earned a bachelor degree in art and philosophy. She went on to earn a teaching credential in art education.  \n“I decided to be a painter as soon as I took my first watercolor class. I loved painting at this initial encounter and still feel the same excitement every time I put brush to paper. I have been in the classroom for many years and I enjoy the stimulation of student interaction. Now retired\, I take an occasional art lesson with the Friday Senior Center Art Group while continuing to paint for myself.” \n“My current series is an exploration into a freer and more spontaneous response to watercolor. Prior to this series\, I was doing very controlled\, cerebral and patterned work. The moments I scrap pencil to paper\, dip brush into gleaming paint and watch color slide down the paper\, I know this is right for me.” \nContact the artist at cgshackel@sbcglobal.net. \n  \n

SUMMARY:2nd Friday ArtAbout at the Pence Gallery

Free admission. \n  \nSlice: A Juried Exhibit of Regional Art \nJul. 11 – Aug. 20 \nThis year’s Slice selection celebrates the diversity of expression in our region with an array of sculptures\, prints\, paintings\, and photography created by 31 visual artists. Juried by Kelly Lindner\, Curator for the University Galleries at California State University\, Sacramento\, Slice represents a fascinating snapshot into what contemporary issues and approaches artists are addressing through their work. Awards will be announced during the reception at 7:30 PM. \n  \nExhibit It! Our program\, Art in Action\, offers kids ages 5-12 engaging art projects that prioritize having fun and learning together with parents or adult caregivers. Projects are designed to introduce kids to making their own artwork by experimenting with creative ideas and materials. Our resident art teacher will introduce you to the wealth of possibilities in our upstairs classroom. This is a drop-in program\, with no registration required.  \n  \nHow it works: \nThere is a fee per child of $5 for Pence members or $10 for non-members\, and you can pay at the door with cash or card. (Become a member starting at $65/year and save!) A parent or adult caregiver is required to stay\, but only has to pay for the project if they are also doing art. Stay as long or as short as you like over the two hour period. \n  \nWorkshop on Sunday\, July 23\, 1 – 3 PM: \nThis program offers exciting projects on the drop-in dates of Jul. 23\, Aug. 20\, and Sep. 17. The July workshop is Miniature Clay Creations! Taking inspiration from food and the natural world\, families will use air dry clay to create unique and colorful sculptural creations. \n  \nLearn more about all of the workshops: https://pencegallery.org/art-in-action/ \n  \nThis program is funded in part by the City of Davis Arts & Cultural Affairs program. \n  \n
