SUMMARY:Cultural Crossroads: Recent Aquisitions from the Jo Ann C. Stabb Collection
DESCRIPTION:(Rudy Garibay)\n\nSeptember 26\, 2023 – 12:00 pm – December 1\, 2023 – 4:00 pm\n\n\nGarments and textiles from around the globe are showcased in “Cultural Crossroads: Recent Acquisitions from the Jo Ann C. Stabb Collection\,” which opens at the UC Davis Design Museum’s 2023-2024 season on Sept. 26. \nDespite the challenges posed by the global pandemic\, the UC Davis Jo Ann C. Stabb Design Collection has been actively extending its range of holdings through generous donations. This exhibition celebrates this growth by showcasing a group of textiles and costumes acquired over the past three years in response to diversifying the curriculum of the Department of Design. \nThe objects on display connect to people by bringing together time-honored artisanship and artistic creation that offer broader perspectives of human intelligence and imaginative expression. From a collection of exquisite African ceremonial textiles\, Miao costumes from southwest China\, and various Japanese kimonos\, to contemporary textile work by Marian Clayton\, a leading textile artist\, these aesthetically unique objects spark inspiration and open up discussion about design inclusion at the cultural crossroads. \nCurated by Adele Zhang\, Department of Design senior continuing lecturer and design collection curator\, the exhibition runs through Dec. 1. \nThe Design Museum\, part of the College of Letters and Science\, is in Cruess Hall\, Room 124. It is free and open weekdays noon to 4 p.m. To schedule a weekend appointment (Sunday 2:00–4:00 p.m. only)\, arrange a group visit\, or for further information please call (530) 752-6150 or email tplance@ucdavis.edu. \nClosed on Saturdays\, holidays and holiday weekends\, and during installations. Click Visit the Design Museum for map and parking information.

SUMMARY:Amber Aguirre: Year of the Rabbit
DESCRIPTION:Amber Aguirre Presents: 365 Bunnies\n\n\nOctober 4 - December 2\, 2023\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmber Aguirre is a celebrated ceramic artist whose works delve into collective social consciousness and the human condition. \n“In 2011 Aguirre produced her first body of work commemorating the Chinese Year Of The Rabbit\, making 365 rabbit sculptures\, each day of the year being. When the Year Of The Rabbit rolled around again in 2023\, she was motivated to repeat the project\, adding familiar names of family and friends to each rabbit. However\, as it often does\, life gets in the way and while this time the motivation remained the same\, the inspiration and emotion was elevated. Early in the project\, trauma affected the family when Amber’s daughter Kailie was diagnosed with a brain tumor…The proceeds from the sale of each rabbit are being donated to the UCLA Brain Cancer Research Center in honor of Kailei. \nEach bunny is hollow\, and each has its own personality and gestures. The hollowness does not represent a void\, but rather a vessel of containment. The surface does not present itself as a canvas upon which to decorate\, but mirrors our skin defining and expressing our inward spirit and existence. Diversity was a focus. The chosen names go beyond those familiar with the artist and include male\, female\, non-gender specific and span different countries and cultures. There are some with female genitals\, some with male\, and some without. Because the bunnies are ultimately avatars for humans\, it was critical to represent all\, not just our western culture and sexuality. They reproduce and fill the planet just like we humans have\, and along with that comes every possible combination of being.” \n– “The Language of Art; Amber Aguirre’s Bunny Project\,” Steven Branfman \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmber Aguirre \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFOR AVAILABILITY\, PLEASE CALL THE \nJOHN NATSOULAS GALLERY AT 530-756-3938\n

SUMMARY:Michael Mikolon: Garments
DESCRIPTION:Michael Mikolon: Garments \nExhibit: October 6 – November 26\, 2023 \nReception: October 13\, 6 – 9 PM \n  \nVisit the Pence Gallery to view a new exhibit upstairs featuring art by Michael Mikolon. As a resident of Northern California\, Mikolon finds inspiration in the diverse landscapes and cultures that surround him. This collection of drawings delves into the intricate relationship between clothing\, identity\, and the stories they carry. Clothing is more than just a functional necessity; it is a means of self-expression\, a reflection of culture\, and a vessel of memories and experiences. \n  \nGarments is a visual exploration of the intimate connection between clothing and the individuals who wear them. Each drawing depicts an item of clothing suspended delicately from a hanger against a blank wall\, inviting viewers to engage with the subtleties and complexities of each piece. Through the meticulous use of pastel and charcoal\, the artist has endeavored to capture not only the texture and materiality of the garments but also the essence of the person who might have worn them. \n  \nImage: drawing by Michael Mikolon \n

SUMMARY:Twilight
DESCRIPTION:Twilight \nExhibit: October 10 – December 1\, 2023 \nReception: October 13\, 6 – 9 PM \n  \nTwilight is the time of day when light fades\, marking that the day is done\, and darkness is impending. For artists\, more than simply a time of day\, twilight can function as a sort of in-between space\, opening boundaries between formerly distinct objects or ideas. In this liminal space four artists from Siskiyou County–Belinda Hanson\, Chris Clother\, Cathy Valentine\, and Carol Jenkins–working in distinctly different media\, address the very real changes they’ve encountered over the past three years. Through installations\, mixed media\, paintings\, and assemblage\, they address their relationship with nature\, light\, and the vagaries of life as they know it.  \n   \nArtist Talk via Zoom \nSaturday\, October 21\, 11 AM – 12:15 PM \nFree\, $10 donation suggested; To register\, visit www.pencegallery.org \n  \nEnjoy a talk via Zoom by the four artists exhibiting in Twilight\, as they share insights into their paintings and sculptures created since the pandemic. Working in different media\, they share an interest in using art to expand and comment upon the ever-changing environment and personal landscape. \n  \nImage: Belinda Hanson\, “They cut off my wing so I wouldn’t be so loud”

SUMMARY:Blanketed: New Paintings by Jack McTiernan
DESCRIPTION:Using a combination of materials\, Jack creates dynamic images that celebrate the beauty in everyday surroundings. “Blanketed” refers to his layering process\, beginning with a watercolor\, pastel and acrylic background applied with spray or airbrush. Hand-cut stencils and graphite produce a foreground which is finished with a layer of ink and a mixture of cold wax and oil paint.  Jack’s unique paintings highlight the beauty in shapes created by what mankind has manufactured to fill the landscape – buildings\, bridges; even streetlights and stop signs. \nThe Artery presents Blanketed with an Artery reception on Friday\, November 10\, 7-9 pm.  The artist will also have a Q & A from 11-Noon at the Artery on October 29.  In addition\, Jack opens his Davis studio from 4-6pm on November 17. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Michael Rowden Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:November 1 @ 8:00 am – November 30 @ 3:00 pm \nArtist Statement:  \nI’m a native of Plumas County. I was born in Portola and I remember Grizzly Valley before the dam at Lake Davis was built. Loss\, trauma and recovery have been recurring themes throughout my life. \nThe list of physical trauma I have endured is extensive. It is difficult for me to fathom at times everything that has happened. It doesn’t seem possible yet I don’t have to look far to find others dealing with more difficult issues than my own. \nMy work is process oriented.  I’m into the nuts and bolts of how art is made. \nI’ve worked in a frame shop. \nI worked in a factory that made elaborate gold plated ceramic sinks. I made the molds\, glazed the sinks\, loaded and fired the kilns. I learned to mix glazes and clays for specific uses. I use some of these recipes along with commercial glazes and clays for my ceramic pieces. \nI made latex molds for a bronze foundry that utilizes the Lost Wax casting process. This experience allowed me to work with many Northern California stars in the field of ceramics. \nI took up painting late in life and I was fortunate to cross paths with Oliver Lee Jackson while a student at CSU Sacramento. Oliver talked about the nuts and bolts of painting. Iconography and sentiment was left to someone else to talk about. \nI like to experiment with technique\, styles and material. I’ve learned to be patient with paintings because sometimes attitudes and ideas need to mature. \nThere is a magic about Plumas County that is unequaled in my view. Hopefully I can capture some of that magical essence in my work to share with those unfortunate enough to never experience this wonderful place.

SUMMARY:Art in Action: Family Art Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Art in Action Family Art Workshops: \nThe Pence Gallery invites children and their families to participate in our family art workshops! Art in Action engages kids in art projects that are fun\, creative\, and collaborative with their family members. This is a drop-in program for ages 5-12\, with no pre-registration required. Projects are designed to introduce kids to making their own artwork by experimenting with creative ideas and materials. Our resident art teacher will introduce you to the wealth of possibilities in our upstairs classroom. \n  \nHow it works: \nWhen you arrive\, sign in at the front desk to pay with cash or card. There is a fee per child of $4 for Pence Members or $8 for Non-Members. A parent or adult caregiver is required to stay\, but only has to pay for the project if they are also doing art. Stay as long or as short as you like over the two hour period. (Become a Member starting at $65/year and save!)  \n  \nFabulous Paper Folds | Sunday\, November 19\, 1 – 3 PM: \nIt’s time to play with paper! Experiment with origami folding techniques and art materials to fashion your own paper crane mobile\, a bouquet of flowers\, and other unique paper creations. \n  \nLearn about more upcoming Art in Action workshops: \nhttps://pencegallery.org/art-in-action/ \n  \nThis program is funded in part by the City of Davis Arts & Cultural Affairs program.
