SUMMARY:Joseph Bellacera: The Matter of Light
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Pence to view a new art exhibit by Joseph Bellacera!\n\nJoseph Bellacera: The Matter of Light Exhibit: Dec. 8\, 2023 – Feb. 2\, 2024\nReception: Friday\, Dec. 8\, 6 – 9 PM\n\nGrounded in the concept that everything in the universe is a manifestation of the energy of light\, Joseph Bellacera has created several series of work that reflect his interest in changing light into matter\, and matter into light. In large-scale mixed media works and digital print\, the artist turns his observations of the natural world into intriguing configurations of color\, pattern\, and texture. Using materials as diverse as wood\, concrete\, hydrocal\, and clay\, Bellacera constructs forms that alter and build upon geometric solids\, covering them in a heightened range of colors.\n\nArtist Talk: Saturday\, Dec. 16\, 3 – 4 PM (Free\, $10 donation suggested)\n\nJoseph Bellacera talks about his work on display in light of his interest in merging scientific theories about the nature of light with his art-making process. Sponsored by Rosa Marquez & Yatish Mishra\, and Tom Doyle & Kathy Joseph Image: Bellacera\, “Lightning Bird”

SUMMARY:Christina Kent: Day to Night
DESCRIPTION:Christina Kent: Day to Night \nExhibit: January 9 – February 29\, 2024 \nReception: January 12\, 6 – 9 PM \n  \nChristina Kent expands upon her observations of everyday life in the city in a new series of oil paintings titled Day to Night. SUMMARY:Judi Eppele Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Judi Eppele Exhibition\n\nJanuary 16 @ 12:00 pm – February 29 @ 12:00 pm\n\nJUDI EPPELE\n\n\n\nArtist Statement \nI’m originally from Los Angeles\, and so was lucky enough to visit museums often and grow a strong love and appreciation of art from a young age. More recently\, I’ve been able to hone my skills\, try out new techniques\, and create art on a regular basis\, both with my personal art business and with my work at Clackeys in downtown Davis–an artisan keycap production company. I primarily work with acrylic paint\, and love to incorporate nature themes into my pieces as a nod to my bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and Management. Some of my recent paintings include a leaf from a ginkgo tree–my favorite tree species–and a weeping willow tree across the back of a denim jacket. \nI also enjoy the freedom of abstract art\, where I can utilize various techniques and color tones to create interesting textures. I would describe my style as joyful\, whimsical\, and inspired by nature. For instance\, I love incorporating gold sparkles and accents into my pieces\, as seen with some of my abstract work or alongside paintings of flowers. I feel it gives it the extra spark of joy that is so often seen with Disney animation\, which is another major inspiration of mine. I hope to create art that can make people smile\, whether it be a flower that reminds them of their mom\, a denim jacket covered in their favorite fruit\, or an abstract painting with their favorite colors. If I can bring a bit of happiness into a person’s day with a piece I’ve made\, I’ve done my job right. \nI’ve recently been vending at events around Davis such as at the first annual Davis Community Holiday Market hosted by The Growing Groves and Sudwerk Brewing Co.\, the 2nd Friday Art About Night Market at The Pence Gallery\, and Rocknasium’s Member Appreciation Party. I hope to continue vending at events such as these throughout the year. If you would like to keep up to date on my work\, you may follow me on my instagram @Judisart and my website at https://judieppele.wixsite.com/judisart. If you would like to purchase any of my pieces or would like a custom piece you can email me at judisartinterest@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:STILL: Racism in America\, A Retrospective in Cartoons
DESCRIPTION:January 23\, 2024 – 12:00 pm – April 21\, 2024 – 4:00 pm\n\n\nThe UC Davis Design Museum explores racism through cartoons in the installation “STILL: Racism in America\, A Retrospective in Cartoons.” Showcasing the work of pioneering father/daughter cartoonists the late Brumsic Brandon\, Jr. and Barbara Brandon-Croft\, the exhibition runs Jan. 23 through April 21\, 2024. \nBrandon\, Jr. (1927– 2014) and Brandon-Croft (1958– ) chronicled the nation’s cultural landscape in their comic strips through the lens of racism. The elder Brandon\, who created Luther in the late sixties\, and was later syndicated by the Los Angeles Times Syndicate until 1986\, was also known for his blistering editorial cartoons. Where I’m Coming From is the work of his youngest daughter\, the nation’s first Black woman cartoonist in the mainstream press; it debuted in 1989 in the Detroit Free Press. Universal Press Syndicate later distributed her provocative feature until 2005. For six decades\, their respective pens lay bare the truth: Nothing has changed. This retrospective reveals how vividly the specter of racism remains in America… “STILL. ” \n“STILL” was originally exhibited at the Medialia Gallery in New York City\, then at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at The Ohio State University and was curated by Tara Nakashima Donahue\, the assistant director for Medialia Gallery in New York. In addition to “STILL\,” she has curated the “From Panel to Panel” comics art series since 2008. \n“STILL” is presented in conjunction with Darnel Degand\, assistant professor\, UC Davis School of Education\, and the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at The Ohio State University. \nThe Design Museum\, part of the College of Letters and Science and free to the public\, is in 124 Cruess Hall. \nThe UC Davis Design Museum is open Monday–Friday\, noon-4:00 p.m. To schedule a weekend appointment (Sunday 2:00–4:00 p.m. only)\, arrange a group visit\, or for further information please call (530) 752-6150 or email tplance@ucdavis.edu. \nSee Design Museum for map and parking information.

SUMMARY:Gina Werfel & Hearne Pardee: Fragments
DESCRIPTION:Gina Werfel & Hearne Pardee: Fragments \nExhibit: February 9 – April 2\, 2024  \nReception: February 9\, 6 – 9 PM \n  \nFragments highlights recent paintings\, collages\, and drawings of Gina Werfel and Hearne Pardee. Both have recently retired from teaching at UC Davis\, having spent more than 20 years teaching art\, in addition to maintaining busy studio practices. Despite the differences between their respective work\, they each approach their practice with the intent of layering or fragmenting multiple points of view or perspectives.   \n  \nWerfel’s abstractions on paper and canvas convey movement through a rapid layering of gestural marks\, stenciled shapes\, and bits of collaged paper. The dense surfaces of her work seem to tilt or shimmer\, together with her placement of neon colors\, these “convey the cacophony of political/cultural currents that surround me.”  \n  \nPardee’s drawings\, photographs\, and paintings serve to expand upon his long-standing interests in the sensory experience of perceiving color and the exploration of the local suburban landscape of Davis as a site of placemaking and belonging. His drawings in local parks and neighborhoods articulate the shapes of our daily life\, and invite the viewer to both inhabit and question the presented view.  \n  \nArtists Talk: Saturday\, March 16\, 3 – 4:30 PM \n(FREE\, $10 suggested donation) \nGina Werfel and Hearne Pardee will discuss their process and inspiration behind their respective recent paintings on display in the exhibit Fragments.  \n  \nSponsored by Tom Doyle & Kathy Joseph\, and Rosa Marquez & Yatish Mishra \n  \nImages: Gina Werfel\, “Ceiling” & Hearne Pardee\, “East” \n

SUMMARY:Should I Make Art? with Terri Bianco
DESCRIPTION:Should I Make Art? with Terri Bianco \nSaturday\, February 17\, 10 AM – 2 PM \n$90 Members | $105 Non-Members (Additional $10 required materials fee) \nShould you make art? Of course\, you should! Whether you’re just thinking about it or you’re on your art journey and could use some refreshers and a dose of motivation\, this class is for you. Here you’ll visit the various approaches to tackling the challenges of art making\, regardless of medium. You’ll be coached on strategies to overcome the pitfalls and traps of creating art\, including those you bring along for the ride. \nIn the morning session\, as we prep and develop a canvas background for your acrylic painting\, the instructor will provide several words or phrases around which you can develop your art. After lunch\, you will create in free form an acrylic painting built around the word or phrase you selected. If you prefer to bring a photo or sketch of something you’d like to recreate\, you can tailor your image to your interpretation of the word or phrase you selected. Art coaching throughout the class offers valuable practices for mixing colors\, working with values\, contrast\, and differences as you lay out your composition. You’ll receive tips and techniques for palette management\, brush care\, and organizational ideas for your studio.  \nRegister: https://pencegallery.org/education/programs/workshops-and-classes/ \nAny questions?
