SUMMARY:STILL: Racism in America\, A Retrospective in Cartoons
DESCRIPTION:January 23\, 2024 – 12:00 pm – April 21\, 2024 – 4:00 pm\n\n\nThe UC Davis Design Museum explores racism through cartoons in the installation “STILL: Racism in America\, A Retrospective in Cartoons.” Showcasing the work of pioneering father/daughter cartoonists the late Brumsic Brandon\, Jr. and Barbara Brandon-Croft\, the exhibition runs Jan. 23 through April 21\, 2024. \nBrandon\, Jr. (1927– 2014) and Brandon-Croft (1958– ) chronicled the nation’s cultural landscape in their comic strips through the lens of racism. The elder Brandon\, who created Luther in the late sixties\, and was later syndicated by the Los Angeles Times Syndicate until 1986\, was also known for his blistering editorial cartoons. Where I’m Coming From is the work of his youngest daughter\, the nation’s first Black woman cartoonist in the mainstream press; it debuted in 1989 in the Detroit Free Press. Universal Press Syndicate later distributed her provocative feature until 2005. For six decades\, their respective pens lay bare the truth: Nothing has changed. This retrospective reveals how vividly the specter of racism remains in America… “STILL. ” \n“STILL” was originally exhibited at the Medialia Gallery in New York City\, then at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at The Ohio State University and was curated by Tara Nakashima Donahue\, the assistant director for Medialia Gallery in New York. In addition to “STILL\,” she has curated the “From Panel to Panel” comics art series since 2008. \n“STILL” is presented in conjunction with Darnel Degand\, assistant professor\, UC Davis School of Education\, and the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at The Ohio State University. \nThe Design Museum\, part of the College of Letters and Science and free to the public\, is in 124 Cruess Hall. \nThe UC Davis Design Museum is open Monday–Friday\, noon-4:00 p.m. To schedule a weekend appointment (Sunday 2:00–4:00 p.m. only)\, arrange a group visit\, or for further information please call (530) 752-6150 or email tplance@ucdavis.edu. \nSee Design Museum for map and parking information.

SUMMARY:Gina Werfel & Hearne Pardee: Fragments
DESCRIPTION:Gina Werfel & Hearne Pardee: Fragments \nExhibit: February 9 – April 2\, 2024  \nReception: February 9\, 6 – 9 PM \n  \nFragments highlights recent paintings\, collages\, and drawings of Gina Werfel and Hearne Pardee. Both have recently retired from teaching at UC Davis\, having spent more than 20 years teaching art\, in addition to maintaining busy studio practices. Despite the differences between their respective work\, they each approach their practice with the intent of layering or fragmenting multiple points of view or perspectives.   \n  \nWerfel’s abstractions on paper and canvas convey movement through a rapid layering of gestural marks\, stenciled shapes\, and bits of collaged paper. The dense surfaces of her work seem to tilt or shimmer\, together with her placement of neon colors\, these “convey the cacophony of political/cultural currents that surround me.”  \n  \nPardee’s drawings\, photographs\, and paintings serve to expand upon his long-standing interests in the sensory experience of perceiving color and the exploration of the local suburban landscape of Davis as a site of placemaking and belonging. His drawings in local parks and neighborhoods articulate the shapes of our daily life\, and invite the viewer to both inhabit and question the presented view.  \n  \nArtists Talk: Saturday\, March 16\, 3 – 4:30 PM \n(FREE\, $10 suggested donation) \nGina Werfel and Hearne Pardee will discuss their process and inspiration behind their respective recent paintings on display in the exhibit Fragments.  \n  \nSponsored by Tom Doyle & Kathy Joseph\, and Rosa Marquez & Yatish Mishra \n  \nImages: Gina Werfel\, “Ceiling” & Hearne Pardee\, “East” \n

SUMMARY:Erica Norelius: Natural Places & Urban Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Erica Norelius: Natural Places & Urban Spaces \nExhibit: March 1 – April 28\, 2024 \nReception: March 8\, 6 – 9 PM \n  \nErica Norelius’ new series of work offers an in-depth dive into the natural spaces of the Golden State\, reaching from the coastal cities and desert areas\, north towards Oregon. The quiet presence of man is often seen in small intrusions such as power lines and roads. As she writes\, “This interplay between man and nature calls attention to how man is also an element of change\, slowly working upon and changing the natural world.” Equally compelling are her captivating cityscapes\, which capture the busy highways and urban street life of Oakland and San Francisco. \n  \nThe Pence is open 11:30 AM – 5 PM\, Tuesday – Sunday (closed Mondays). \n  \nImages: Erica Norelius\, “Mendocino Coast” (left) & “Overlooking Chinatown” (right) \n

The quiet presence of man is often seen in small intrusions such as power lines and roads. Equally compelling are her captivating cityscapes\, which capture the busy highways and urban street life of Oakland and San Francisco. \n  \nGina Werfel & Hearne Pardee: Fragments \nFeb. 9 – Apr. 2 \nThis exhibit highlights recent paintings\, collages\, and drawings of Gina Werfel and Hearne Pardee\, who have recently retired from teaching at UC Davis after having spent more than 20 years teaching art\, in addition to maintaining busy studio practices. Despite the differences between their respective work\, they each approach their practice with the intent of layering or fragmenting multiple points of view or perspectives.   \n  \nBussie Parker Kehoe: Lucky Seven \nMar. 5 – 31 \nThis month\, we are featuring work along the stairway by mixed media artist\, Bussie Parker Kehoe. This series incorporates seven colors of old house paint and seven distinct assembling styles. \n  \n— \n  \nVisit the Pence and other venues in Downtown Davis for the 2nd Friday artwalk. SUMMARY:Four for the Figure Exhibition Reception
DESCRIPTION:The John Natsoulas Gallery is thrilled to host an exciting exhibition\, Four For The Figure\, featuring a multitalented group of artists. Peer into the intensely intricate and lyrical worlds of four prolific artists\, including Larry Clark\, Dr. Clarence Major\, Kevin Snipes\, and Ira Watkins\, all of whom channel their painterly aesthetics through canvas and ceramics to explore the figure’s character and to celebrate their shared African American identity. Larry Clark grew up in Louisiana but moved to San Francisco in 1987 where he drew and painted at the Hospitality House’s Community Arts Program. Against all odds\, including poverty\, disease\, and institutionalized violence\, he never stopped making art. His paintings explore imagery of Black legacy\, with a distinctive style rooted in the intricacies of his drawings. Clarence Major is a critically acclaimed author\, poet\, and painter whose subjects range from communities gathering in bustling streets to pensive\, powerful women\, donning myriads of patterns and colors. As for Kevin Snipes\, he is a brilliant ceramist and painter who has exhibited nationally and internationally. In a variety of media\, he crafts narratives intended to confront discrimination through the adoption of a sophisticated\, illustrative approach. Then\, there is the activist responsible for the stunning mural of Martin Luther King in Waco\, Texas: Ira Watkins. He is a Bay Area resident and self-taught artist whose compositions often portray the African American diaspora in the Bay Area during World War II\, and whose scenes commemorate Black compassion. \nFrom February 28 to April 5\, you can see their art in conversation with one another and discover how each artist uniquely addresses the human form. The opening reception will take place on March 8th from 7:00 – 9:00 PM\, and it will feature live music and free refreshments. \n

SUMMARY:Learn Powder Coated Painting Art
DESCRIPTION:What is Powder Coated Painting Art?\nPowder coating is mainly used for coating of metals\, such as household appliances\, automobiles\, and bicycle frames. The appliance industry alone makes up approximately one-third of all the industrial parts that are powder coated.\nThe paint powder is applied via a spray gun. While it travels through the spray gun onto a metal surface that is grounded\, it is given an electrostatic (negative) charge. The part to be coated is grounded\, so the charged powder is attracted to it. The powder sticks to the part\, quickly forming an even layer. The coating is cured at a specified temperature; cure temperatures vary depending on the coating being applied.\nAt our Workshop\,\nWe will show and  demonstrating all the steps how it works and then we will guide you to make your own artwork. We are not using spray gun but using little brushes or toothpicks or simply our fingers to spread the colored powder to make art on a metal panels. We bake the art work afterwards for 20minutes at 380degree temperature in the oven. You’ll bring your art work home on that day.\nNo art skills needed or no age limits.\nWe will provide some snacks & drinks.\nRSVP 916)[969-8654](tel:969-8654) \n
