SUMMARY:Art in Action: Luminous Paper Lanterns
DESCRIPTION:Art in Action Family Art Workshops: \nThe Pence Gallery invites children and their families to participate in our monthly family art workshops! Art in Action engages kids in art projects that are fun\, creative\, and collaborative with their family members. This is a drop-in program for ages 5-12\, with no pre-registration required. Projects are designed to introduce kids to making their own artwork by experimenting with creative ideas and materials. Our resident art teacher will introduce you to the wealth of possibilities in our upstairs classroom. \n  \nHow it works: \nWhen you arrive\, sign in at the front desk to pay with cash or card. There is a fee per child of $4 for Pence Members or $8 for Non-Members. A parent or adult caregiver is required to stay\, but only has to pay for the project if they are also doing art. (Become a Member starting at $65/year and save!) Stay as long or as short as you like over the two hour period. Space and supplies are limited to the first 25 participants and are available on a first come\, first served basis. \n  \nLuminous Paper Lanterns | Sunday\, June 2\, 1 – 3 PM \nLight up your summer evenings with a lantern that sparkles and glows! Artists will be handling their own sales through cash\, check\, mobile pay\, etc. All proceeds go directly to the artists! \n  \nMake a Clay Tile! \nIn the courtyard from 6 – 8 PM \nThe Davis Cemetery District’s COVID-19 Memorial Artist Team invites the public to make a ceramic tile for the mosaic installation. Open to all ages and experience levels. \n  \nGarden Tour Plein Air Paintings \nMay 25 – June 25 (New!) \nAs an essential part of our May 5 Garden Tour event\, five artists participated in creating distinct views of the selected gardens. Co-curated by Dwight Head\, Barbetta Lockart\, and Cynthia Lou\, select regional artists have created artworks incorporating records.\n\nStarted by Dwight Head\, Sacramento artist\, in 2018 to honor Russ Solomon the first “New Spin on Vinyl Show” (aka “The Record Show”) was born\, showcasing records not only giving us hours of listening pleasure\, but also endless inspiration as fine art.\n\nSacramento was Russ Solomon’s stomping ground. He loved music and records\, starting the world-renowned Tower Records that brought tunes of all sorts to the area and around the globe. He loved art and making art as a photographer. A big supporter of the arts in California\, his art collection included works by many regional artists.\n\nSince the success of the first exhibition\, there have been yearly exhibits\, involving more artists\, and artworks in a variety of mediums. Even as the show has expanded\, the core theme remains; all artists incorporate records into their work.\n\nThe artists and curators will be in attendance at the exhibition’s opening\, 5:30-8 p.m. Thursday June 20.  The reception will also feature music by Harold Sexton and hands-on art making with YoloArts’ Educators. Light refreshments and Yolo County wines will be available.\nProgramming around the exhibit includes:\nSaturday June 22 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Come out to a free record painting event for all ages. Participants will be able to paint a record to take home while listening to a DJ and enjoying snacks. Artists from the A New Spin On Vinyl exhibition will also be attending.\nSaturday July 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Artists/instructors Dwight Head and Barbetta Lockart will be conducting a workshop where you will create works of art using paint\, glue\, paper\, and mixed media on old phonograph records as your art surface. SUMMARY:Exhibit It! Artwork Drop-Off
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit It! A Community Art Exhibit \n  \nIt’s time for our annual non-juried exhibit to highlight the talent of our community’s artists! Exhibit It! is open to artists ages 16 and up. Artists self-select one piece (limit 30” in any direction\, including frame\, and no more than 50 lb.) and bring it to the Pence on Friday\, June 28\, beginning at 11:30 AM. All artworks must be ready to install.  \n  \nThe Pence will accept the first 50 artworks that are submitted after the artist has paid the submission fee ($25 for Pence Members\, $35 for Non-Members) and completed an artist contract\, which is provided upon arrival. Please be prepared to fill out information about your piece\, including title\, medium\, dimensions\, retail price\, etc. This is a first come\, first served process. No early drop-offs accepted. \n  \nParticipants can win the Curator’s Choice award of $100\, announced during the reception on July 12. Or they can win the Public Choice award\, which includes a free Pence annual membership and a picture in the Davis Enterprise. DESCRIPTION:This 2 day workshop will survey different printmaking techniques: screen printing\, block printing\, and monotype printing.Attendees will learn the basics of image-based screen printing; bring any image of choice and create a screen with emulsion. Learn the differences in materials within block printing\, including different block materials and inks\, and how to safely carve a design into a linocut\, wood\, or rubber block. Explore the unique method of monotype printing\, which creates a single image each time you print. Participants will also learn how to paint with ink\, different ink removal techniques to create designs\, and mono-print techniques with images. Materials included.

DESCRIPTION:In honor of Pride Month\, kids will be making greeting cards\, decorating them collage-style with colorful pieces of cut paper to any design they want. On the inside of the cards\, kids can write messages of support to the LGBTQ+ community. This can be to themselves\, friends or family\, or to the community in general.
