DESCRIPTION:Dave Webb: the grateful chair \nOctober 1 – November 1\, 2024 \nReception: October 11\, 6 – 9 PM \n  \nDave Webb’s response to his wife’s cancer produced the grateful chair. SUMMARY:Crackle and Glow: Raku Ceramics
DESCRIPTION:The Artery presents “Crackle and Glow: Raku Ceramics.” This vibrant exhibit features Brigitte Chertok’s naked raku and Paula Bellacera’s raku bird masks. Reception\, Oct. 11\, 6-9.  Naked raku\, Brigitte’s choice\, is a technique that uses all four elements – fire\, earth\, air and water.  Producing this type of raku was very exciting.  The smooth\, silky burnished surface of naked raku mimics natural polished stone\, which makes touching almost irresistible. Paula’s raku masks echo ancient civilization artistic celebration of animal spirits connection to humans. Another link to early cultures is their dependence on fire—also an essential to producing the unique quality of raku. The unpredictability of this ceramic technique is exciting and sometimes unexpected.  Raku is the art of imperfection.

SUMMARY:Alejandro Rubio: The Green Man & Other Tales
DESCRIPTION:Alejandro Rubio: The Green Man & Other Tales \nOctober 4 – November 30\, 2024 \nReception: October 11\, 6 – 9 PM \n  \nAlejandro Rubio’s paintings reflect his interest in creating imaginary landscapes that evoke a sense of familiarity. Pulling from his memories\, he adapts bits of the places inspired by growing up in South America\, setting colorful cars\, buildings\, and streets in an urban grid. Turning towards the rural\, the artist composes a scene of idyllic islands\, complete with trees and a few small homes\, within a tranquil ocean. Even within this peaceful setting\, he reminds us of our responsibility to our planet\, as personified as ‘the green man\,’ a fedora-wearing entity beset by our disastrous environmental actions.  \n  \nArtist Talk: November 2\, 2 – 3:30 PM \n(FREE\, $10 suggested donation) \n  \nRubio is an established painter who has lived and worked in Davis and Oakland for over 24 years. He will talk about his formative years as an artist in Uruguay\, and his transition to landscape painting in Northern California\, including his fascination with the unique features of our Central Valley environment.  \n  \nSponsored by Tom Doyle & Kathy Joseph.  \n  \nThe Pence Gallery is open 11:30 AM – 5 PM\, Tuesday – Sunday (closed Mondays). There may be adjusted hours around holidays; please call 530-758-3370 with inquiries. \n  \nImage: Alejandro Rubio\, “Isthmus”

DESCRIPTION:Clarissa Tossin works with moving-image\, sculpture and installation to propose alternative narratives for places defined by histories of colonization. Through a mix of research\, storytelling\, and gestures of mapping and layering\, Tossin places seemingly disparate elements into conversation\, generating unexpected moments of interconnectedness across time and space. Tossin’s childhood in Brasília heavily influenced early films and installations deconstructing Brazil’s modernist history\, which over the years have expanded to encompass geographies ranging from her adopted home of Los Angeles to the vast realms of outer space. \nTossin received an M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts and a B.F.A. from Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado\, São Paulo. Her work is currently featured in the Whitney Biennial 2024: Even Better Than the Real Thing and in a solo exhibition at Frye Art Museum\, Seattle. \nDuring fall quarter 2024\, Tossin will teach the undergraduate course\, ART190\, and the graduate seminar\, ART 290D. ART 190 meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1–4 p.m. \nFilm screening\, Before the Volcanoes Sing: Monday\, Oct. 7 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.\, Cruess Hall\, Room 1002 \nArtist talk: Thursday\, Oct. 10 from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.\, Manetti Shrem Museum. The talk is open to the public. Doors open at 4 p.m. \nOrganized by The California Studio: Manetti Shrem Artist Residencies in the Maria Manetti Shrem Art Studio Program. SUMMARY:2nd Friday ArtAbout at the Pence Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Pence Gallery for our 2nd Friday ArtAbout reception on October 11\, 6 – 9 PM. Enjoy wine by Fiddlehead Cellars while browsing all of the new art exhibits & the gift store. Free admission! \n  \nAlejandro Rubio: The Green Man & Other Tales \nOct. 4 – Nov. 30 \nAlejandro Rubio’s paintings reflect his interest in creating imaginary landscapes that evoke a sense of familiarity. Pulling from his memories\, he adapts bits of the places inspired by growing up in Uruguay\, setting colorful cars\, buildings\, and streets in an urban grid. Turning towards the rural\, the artist composes a scene of idyllic islands\, complete with trees and a few small homes\, within a tranquil ocean. Even within this peaceful setting\, he reminds us of our responsibility to our planet\, as personified as ‘the green man\,’ a fedora-wearing figure beset by our disastrous environmental actions.  \n  \nDave Webb: the grateful chair \nOct. 1 – Nov. 1 \nDave Webb’s response to his wife’s cancer produced the grateful chair. Considering her path from terminal diagnosis to remission\, the grateful chair is part love note\, part meditation on mortality\, and part unsolicited advice. With a video installation\, dozens of still iPhone images printed on metal and the chair itself\, the exhibit invites us to consider our own connections to love and loss.    \n  \nPaul Hermann: Within the Chrysalis \nOct. 4 – Nov. 24 \nWith this body of work\, Bay Area artist Paul Hermann embraces the complexity of human identity. Alluding to themes adapted from Jungian psychology\, Greek mythology\, and the Tarot\, Hermann often begins his figurative painting with an impulse. Female figures appear in his work in many guises to explore complex concepts of self-hood and connection to the divine.   \n  \nPapercuts by Bianca Levan  \nOct. 4 – Oct. 31 \nWe are featuring new work along the stairway this month by Bianca Levan\, a Vietnamese-American papercut artist based in San Francisco\, California. She is fascinated with the process by which contemplation\, emotion\, and choice weave a path in time. As a self-taught artist\, Bianca follows curiosity and is driven by a desire for expression. Her hand-cut work embraces imperfections left by the knife blade and the inherent constraints of black paper and negative spaces. \n  \n— \n  \nVisit the Pence and other venues in Downtown Davis for the 2nd Friday artwalk. We will have printed ArtAbout guides available that week. Follow the 2nd Friday ArtAbout Facebook page for more information: https://www.facebook.com/davisartabout. \n  \nImages: \nAlejandro Rubio\, “Flat Perspective” \nDave Webb\, “Cracks in the Surface” \nPaul Hermann\, “Harlequin” \nBianca Levan\, “The Light is Good”

SUMMARY:Photo Club of Davis Storm Chasing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Photography Club of Davis will meet on Wednesday\, October 16\, from 7:10pm—8:45pm in the Blanchard Room of the Davis Library at 315 E. 14th Street. Guest speaker Susan Lord Bovey will share her experience chasing storms and photographing these incredible weather events. This is a free event open to the public. \nBovey will show how a commercial storm tour works—from the morning briefings and weather forecasts—to the miles of driving to get in position for the afternoon storms. She says\, “Weather in the Midwest and High Plains can be very temperamental\, and we never know what we’ll experience. Tornadoes can have a mind of their own.” \nBovey’s work can be seen in local photography shows and online at www.flickr.com/photos/bovey. \n“This event is not sponsored by Yolo County Library and the presence of this group in the meeting room does not constitute Yolo County Library’s endorsement of the policies or beliefs of this group.”

SUMMARY:Trap: Davis High’s Fall Play
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a unique Halloween scare? Davis High Theater is excited to bring Stephen Gregg’s gripping psychological thriller Trap to the Brunelle Theater starting October 18th.   \nMENACHAP\, CALIFORNIA. An incomprehensible event: every person in the audience of a high school play falls unconscious—every person but one. Using interviews with witnesses\, loved ones\, first responders\, and the investigators pursuing the case\, a theater ensemble brings the story of the strange event to life\, documentary-style. But as the strands weave together into an increasingly dangerous web\, it becomes clear that this phenomenon might not be entirely in the past. Unnerving\, exhilarating\, and wildly inventive\, you’ve never walked into anything quite like Trap. \nPerformances are October 18th\, 19th\, 25th and 26th at 7:00; and October 20th and 27th at 2:00 at the Brunelle Performance Hall.  Tickets can be purchased at the DHS Theater website and are $10 for students\, $15 for general audiences\, with a special $5 student discounted ticket only available on Sundays purchased at the door. Suitable for all who are comfortable with scary content.
