SUMMARY:Dave Webb: the grateful chair
DESCRIPTION:Dave Webb: the grateful chair \nOctober 1 – November 1\, 2024 \nReception: October 11\, 6 – 9 PM \n  \nDave Webb’s response to his wife’s cancer produced the grateful chair. Considering her path from terminal diagnosis to remission\, the grateful chair is part love note\, part meditation on mortality\, and part unsolicited advice. With a video installation\, dozens of still iPhone images printed on metal and the chair itself\, the exhibit invites us to consider our own connections to love and loss.    \n  \nArtist Talk: Sunday\, October 27\, 2 – 3:30 PM  \n(FREE\, $10 donation suggested) \ni \nDave Webb discusses the merging of writing\, music\, and photography in the grateful chair\, expanding upon how art functioned both as a form of reflection and self-expression during his wife’s treatment for cancer.  \n  \nSponsored by Kim Ohlson & Allen Barnes\, and Pat & Hoy Carman.   \n  \nThe Pence Gallery is open 11:30 AM – 5 PM\, Tuesday – Sunday (closed Monday). \n  \nImage: Dave Webb\, “Soon Enough”

DESCRIPTION:Paul Hermann: Within the Chrysalis \nOctober 4 – November 24\, 2024 \nReception: October 11\, 6 – 9 PM \nWith this body of work\, Bay Area artist Paul Hermann embraces the complexity of human identity. SUMMARY:Alejandro Rubio: The Green Man & Other Tales
DESCRIPTION:Alejandro Rubio: The Green Man & Other Tales \nOctober 4 – November 30\, 2024 \nReception: October 11\, 6 – 9 PM \n  \nAlejandro Rubio’s paintings reflect his interest in creating imaginary landscapes that evoke a sense of familiarity. Pulling from his memories\, he adapts bits of the places inspired by growing up in South America\, setting colorful cars\, buildings\, and streets in an urban grid. Turning towards the rural\, the artist composes a scene of idyllic islands\, complete with trees and a few small homes\, within a tranquil ocean. Even within this peaceful setting\, he reminds us of our responsibility to our planet\, as personified as ‘the green man\,’ a fedora-wearing entity beset by our disastrous environmental actions.  \n  \nArtist Talk: November 2\, 2 – 3:30 PM \n(FREE\, $10 suggested donation) \n  \nRubio is an established painter who has lived and worked in Davis and Oakland for over 24 years. He will talk about his formative years as an artist in Uruguay\, and his transition to landscape painting in Northern California\, including his fascination with the unique features of our Central Valley environment.  \n  \nSponsored by Tom Doyle & Kathy Joseph.  \n  \nThe Pence Gallery is open 11:30 AM – 5 PM\, Tuesday – Sunday (closed Mondays). There may be adjusted hours around holidays; please call 530-758-3370 with inquiries. \n  \nImage: Alejandro Rubio\, “Isthmus”

SUMMARY:Outta the Woods: Art from the Urban Forest
DESCRIPTION:The Artery presents “Outta the Woods.” This vibrant exhibit features the wood creations of Tom Babb and Jay Schreider.  Rebecca Le-Babb displays her dried flower. Linda Bird’s glass artistry is also part of this exhibit. \nBoth Tom and Jay create beautiful\, unique wood pieces. They capture the distinctive texture and contrasting color of wood grain\, as well as the imperfections that reflect the original tree. Recently retired\, Tom has expanded a childhood love of wood into crafting practical and sculptural art from reclaimed\, found\, or pruned woods.  Using milled logs\, Jay considers the shape\, grain\, and color of the wood as he fabricates his lovely pieces.  Rebecca brings her dried flower art\, enriched by oil and watercolor. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Pop-Up Art Sale
DESCRIPTION:Four long-time Davis residents and artisans will host an open-air Pop-Up Art Sale of their work on Sunday\, November 3\, at 806 Falcon Avenue in Davis. Follow the blue and yellow signs to this annual event which brings together a group of professionals who developed their artistic passions amid their careers or after retirement. \nNancy Gelbard discovered oil painting when joining her sisters in a week-long workshop on the Central Coast\, almost 10 years ago. Her paintings include still life\, plein air\, and occasionally her husband David’s street photography. Nancy’s drawings focus on the human figure\, still life\, and her interpretation of master artists’ work.  Nancy’s art has brought her a new kind of joy\, friendships\, and a keener awareness of the world around her. \nAmina Harris creates unusual jewelry blending beads\, gemstones\, and artifacts from all over the world. “My work brings together the unexpected\, resulting in one-of-a-kind necklaces\, collars\, bracelets and earrings\,” Harris said.  She also serves as Queen Bee of The HIVE in Woodland. \nDavid Kalb is a street and portrait photographer who loves Henri Cartier Bresson’s credo: “It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera…they are made with the eye\, heart and head”.  His journey into street photography began 12 years ago after selling his consulting business.  According to Kalb\, “I often view this as a people safari\, roaming the streets of a city\, camera at the ready\, always keeping my eyes open for humorous situations\, intriguing expressions\, ironic moments\, and touching interactions”. \nRebecca Stein-Wexler designs and hand-paints silk scarves\, shawls\, and wall art. She uses a palette of vivid dyes to create stylized images from the natural world. “I find the flow of color on silk mesmerizing and love creating art for people to enjoy.”  Both Amina and Rebecca are members of the Artery\, an Artist co-op in downtown Davis. \nIf you’re looking for something beyond the usual to gift or for yourself this season\, visit these four artists’ open-air pop-up sale on Sunday\, November 3\, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will take place rain or shine. \n

SUMMARY:Fernando Palma Rodríguez – Visiting Artist Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Fernando Palma Rodríguez combines his training as an artist and mechanical engineer to create robotic sculptures that utilize custom software to perform narrative choreographies. Central to Palma Rodríguez’s practice is an emphasis on indigenous ancestral knowledge\, both as an integral part of contemporary life and a way of shaping the future. Drawing on Aztec mythology and pictorial codices — as well as colonial histories — his works reframe language through the physical activation of these linguistic symbols. He lives in the agricultural region of Milpa Alta outside Mexico City\, where he runs Calpulli Tecalco\, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Nahua language and culture. \nOrganized by the Maria Manetti Shrem Art Studio Program and supported by the College of Letters and Science at UC Davis. Co-sponsored by the Manetti Shrem Museum.

SUMMARY:2nd Friday ArtAbout reception: Gwenn Walsh
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Still Life In Oil \nGwenn Walsh \noil paintings \nNovember 2 to December 6 \n2nd Friday ArtAbout Reception: November 8\, 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. \nLogos Books\, 513 Second Street\, Davis\, CA\, 95616 \nGwenn Walsh is captivated by the lush color of oil paint and the fluidity of movement used when it is applied to the canvas. She works directly from observation “alla prima”. She has explored figurative art\, still life and landscapes. Walsh feels engaged in the opportunity that still life presents\, especially as it applies to composition and lighting. Her paintings are completed in one session in order to capture the immediacy of the moment. \n

SUMMARY:2nd Friday ArtAbout at the Pence Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Pence Gallery for our 2nd Friday ArtAbout reception on November 8\, 6 – 9 PM. Shop in our Holiday Market\, browse the exhibits\, and enjoy wine by Fiddlehead Cellars. Hear live music by Sammy and Lauren Leverone\, including a mixture of folk\, bluegrass\, Americana\, and holiday songs. Free admission! \n  \nHoliday Market \nNov. 8 – Dec. 24 \nOur annual Holiday Market is a treasure trove of hand-crafted items created by regional artists and artisans\, perfect for holiday gift giving. Visitors can enjoy shopping from cozy knit scarves\, unique bags\, jewelry\, ceramics\, paintings\, and more. There are over 50 artists participating this year\, and our gallery will be overflowing with fun items. Don’t forget\, Pence Members receive 10% off of Holiday Market purchases! \n  \nAlejandro Rubio: The Green Man & Other Tales \nOct. 4 – Nov. 30 \nAlejandro Rubio’s paintings reflect his interest in creating imaginary landscapes that evoke a sense of familiarity. Pulling from his memories\, he adapts bits of the places inspired by growing up in Uruguay\, setting colorful cars\, buildings\, and streets in an urban grid. Turning towards the rural\, the artist composes a scene of idyllic islands\, complete with trees and a few small homes\, within a tranquil ocean. Even within this peaceful setting\, he reminds us of our responsibility to our planet\, as personified as ‘the green man\,’ a fedora-wearing figure beset by our disastrous environmental actions.  \n  \nPaul Hermann: Within the Chrysalis \nOct. 4 – Nov. 24 \nWith this body of work\, Bay Area artist Paul Hermann embraces the complexity of human identity. Alluding to themes adapted from Jungian psychology\, Greek mythology\, and the Tarot\, Hermann often begins his figurative painting with an impulse. Female figures appear in his work in many guises to explore complex concepts of self-hood and connection to the divine.   \n  \nMixed Media Work by Elana Bober \nNov. 5 – Nov. 30 \nView art along the stairway this month by Elana Bober\, whose drawings are inspired by fleeting moments in nature: foamy waves on the beach\, swirling tidal pools and reflections of the sky. They are ethereal yet imperfect. The artist creates watery watercolor drawings combined with sewing threads and translucent payettes\, materials from her past as a textile designer. \n  \n— \n  \nVisit the Pence and other venues in Downtown Davis for the 2nd Friday artwalk. We will have printed ArtAbout guides available that week. Follow the 2nd Friday ArtAbout Facebook page for more information: https://www.facebook.com/davisartabout. \n  \nImages: \nHoliday Market 2023 \nAlejandro Rubio\, “Three Cypress Trees” (detail) \nPaul Hermann\, “The Divine Intuitive” \nElana Bober\, Untitled (detail)
