SUMMARY:Stephen Giannetti: All In
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Giannetti: All In  \nExhibit: December 13\, 2024 – February 2\, 2025 \nReception: Friday\, December 13\, 6 – 9 PM (Free) \nArtist Talk: Saturday\, January 18\, 3 – 4:30 PM (Free\, suggested donation $10) \n  \nStephen Giannetti has explored the grid and the circle in various media over his 30-year career. Early in his career\, he pioneered a new mode of approaching the modernist grid. By painting three primary and three secondary colors in a specific pattern to define a set of same-sized circles\, Giannetti sought to create an engaging visual experience\, where the act of seeing color is primary. For the past 15 years\, Giannetti has adapted his method of hand-painting with traditional oil paint to the more contemporary application of acrylic spray paint. Using poker chips as a stencil for layering spray paint\, he creates an active space where colors mix\, and shapes fade in and out of view. During the pandemic\, the artist began to use poker chips as the building blocks of sculptural forms. By creating objects referencing baskets\, vases\, or geometric shapes\, the artist stays true to his interest in working with simplified forms and repeated patterns.  \n  \nSponsored by Royal Guest Hotels\, and Charles Cunningham.  \n  \nImage: Stephen Giannetti\, “South of Summer” \n

SUMMARY:Davis Poetry Night Reading & Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:Join Poetry in Davis for the first Poetry Night Reading Series of 2025. \nParis-based poet Nicolette Daskalakis will be reading from her latest poetry book “Tell Me I’m Not On Fire” (Rich Poets Press). Opening for Daskalakis will be the Davis poet Dorine Jennette\, author of “Urchin to Follow” (The National Poetry Review Press). The reading will be followed by an open mic\, which begins at 8pm. Please arrive early to sign up for the open mic portion\, as most slots are filled by 7pm. \nThursday\, January 2nd @ 7pm\nJohn Natsoulas Gallery\n521 1st Street\, Davis\, CA \nAbout Nicolette Daskalakis:\nBorn in the fog of San Francisco\, Nicolette Daskalakis is a writer\, filmmaker\, and multidisciplinary artist based in Paris. Her writing has been anthologized by HarperCollins\, nominated for a Pushcart Prize\, and published in numerous literary journals. Daskalakis is the author of multiple poetry books\, including Tell Me I’m Not On Fire (2024) and Portrait of Your Ex Assembling Furniture (2018). She holds a BA in Film & TV Production from the USC School of Cinematic Arts and an MFA from the Institut Supérieur des Arts et du Design de Toulouse. Nicolette is also a graduate of Davis Senior High School. \nAbout “Tell Me I’m Not On Fire”:\n“Tell Me I’m Not on Fire” emergency ejects the reader into a burning landscape populated by men in ski masks\, televised beauty queens\, ordained Elvis impersonators\, and lonely arsonists. These poems set fire to the facade of “Everything’s fine!” and examine what’s hidden underneath. Dark humor\, raw intimacy\, and a host of pop culture references ultimately reveal the unending apocalypse of being human. We’re all on fire\, but that’s alright. Buckle up and let these poems rob a bank\, throw you into an unmarked van\, and high-speed chase a hurricane. Once you get to know them\, you’ll find you have a lot more in common than you thought. \nAbout the Poetry Night Reading Series:\nThe Poetry Night Reading Series\, hosted by Dr. Andy Jones\, is a twice-monthly poetry reading featuring established writers\, poets\, and performers. The Poetry Night occurs on the first and third Thursday of every month at the John Natsoulas Gallery. Find out more about the Poetry Night Reading Series by visiting http://www.poetryindavis.com \n

SUMMARY:Contained: The Art of Stillness
DESCRIPTION:With a spiritual leaning that bridges Eastern and Western philosophy\, each piece in this exhibition contains heart and soul. Art reflects life…a return to decades long practices of meditation\, silence and contemplation are reflected in this collection. Between 3D sculptures and framed pieces\, it is Louise’s desire that the viewer remember a bit of peace and stillness as they stop into the gallery in the new year. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Bussie Parker Kehoe: A Curious Garden \nExhibit: January 10 – February 28\, 2025 \nReception: Friday\, January 10\, 6 – 9 PM \nConversation with the Artist & Director Natalie Nelson: Saturday\, February 22\, 2 – 3:30 PM (Free\, $10 donation suggested) \n  \nBussie Parker Kehoe’s mixed media work walks the line between painting and sculpture. The artist painstakingly pours discarded household paint into stacks of colorful circles\, celebrating found materials in unusual ways. Laying the dried circles in support next to one another\, her work resembles leaves in an explosion of growth. Other times\, Kehoe cuts the dried paint peels into smaller shapes\, placed next to each other in an irregular colorful patchwork. Kehoe views her work as reminiscent of the patterned Korean textiles from her youth\, creating a lively ‘quilt’ full of texture and movement that seems to escape from its base.  \n  \nSponsored by Rosa Marquez and Yatish Mishra\, as part of the Pence Gallery’s Emerging Artist Award. \n  \nThe Pence is open 11:30 AM – 5 PM\, Tuesday – Sunday (closed Mondays). \n  \nImage: Photo by Brandon Joseph Baker; Bussie Parker Kehoe\, “Languorous”

SUMMARY:2nd Friday ArtAbout at the Pence Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Pence Gallery for our 2nd Friday ArtAbout reception on January 10\, 6 – 9 PM. Browse a variety of art exhibits and enjoy some wine by Fiddlehead Cellars. Free admission! \n  \nStephen Giannetti: All In \nDec. 13 – Feb. 2 \nStephen Giannetti has explored the grid and the circle in various media over his 30-year career. Using poker chips as a stencil for layering spray paint\, he creates an active space where colors mix\, and shapes fade in and out of view. By painting three primary and three secondary colors in a specific pattern to define a set of same-sized circles\, Giannetti seeks to create an engaging visual experience\, where the act of seeing color is primary. The artist also uses poker chips as the building blocks of sculptural forms\, referencing baskets\, vases\, or geometric shapes. \n  \nBussie Parker Kehoe: A Curious Garden \nJan. 10 – Feb. 28 \nBussie Parker Kehoe’s mixed media work walks the line between painting and sculpture. \n  \nJordan Hayes: The Little Things \nDec. 6 – Jan. 30 \nJordan Hayes is a figurative painter whose recent work centers on portraying objects with underlying stories and deeper meanings. Her figures engage with these items in quiet scenes\, featuring dramatic lighting\, eye-catching hues\, and attention to detail\, to provoke a greater appreciation for life’s subtleties. \n  \nQuilled Paper Art by Kathy Canfield Shepard \nJan. 10 – Feb. 28 \nKathy Canfield Shepard stretches the boundaries of traditional techniques to create intricate three-dimensional works of art out of paper. Trained in surface pattern design\, she uses her own designed papers in her work\, incorporates her skills as a graphic designer and watercolor artist\, and uses seed beads and other found objects to highlight her designs. Her work is on display along the stairway. \n  \n— \n  \nVisit the Pence and other venues in Downtown Davis for the 2nd Friday artwalk. We will have printed ArtAbout guides available that week.
