SUMMARY:60 Years of Mark Bulwinkle
DESCRIPTION:The John Natsoulas Gallery is proud to announce a major retrospective exhibition of the work of acclaimed Funk artist Mark Bulwinkle\, opening June 2026. Spanning two floors of the gallery\, this landmark exhibition will survey six decades of the artist’s prolific career and explore the full breadth of his creative practice. \nThis exhibition\, the first to consider every aspect of the artist’s significant career\, will address Mark Bulwinkle’s interests in printmaking\, ceramics\, and metal sculpture. His distinctive artworks will be accompanied by an array of archival materials – photographs\, publications\, and ephemera – that all highlight his expansive body of work. The exhibition will follow a chronological arc\, presenting his earliest forays into printmaking and ceramics and to his later development into one of the most well-known metal sculptors of today. The organization of the exhibition will highlight his place alongside fellow artists who also pioneered West Coast art movements. \nMark Bulwinkle (b. 1946) was born in Massachusetts and he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a BFA in 1968. As an anti-war proponent\, he naturally gravitated toward the counterculture ideals of the West Coast\, where he delved into the Funk Movement and the Hippy Art scene. After completing an MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in printmaking he also attended the San Francisco John O’Connell Trade School to study industrial welding. From there\, he used those skills as a shipbuilder at Bethlehem Ship Yards for over a decade. In 1987\, he became a full time artist\, combining his knowledge of printmaking with welding to create torch-cut metal cutouts. As pioneer of this medium\, Bulwinkle quickly gained international notoriety\, and he showed in museums and galleries across the world. National publication also covered the transformation of his own property as a sculpture-filled landmark he called the eponymous “Bulwinkleland\,” earning him a larger-than-life reputation for the bizarre. Many have imitated his techniques and style\, but no one marches his singular ability to blend humor\, provocation\, and technical mastery. Today\, Bulwinkle remains a vital force in contemporary art\, producing prints\, sculptures\, and ceramics that challenge convention and celebrate the absurd. \n“Close friends and fellow artists have remarked that Mark does not make art. He makes Bulwinkles.” \nThe exhibition’s opening reception is to be held to coincide with the Downtown Davis 2nd Friday ArtAbout on July 10 from 7:00-9:00 PM. It will feature live music and refreshments.

SUMMARY:Slice: A Juried Exhibit of Regional Art
DESCRIPTION:Slice: A Juried Exhibit of Regional Art\nExhibit: July 10 – August 16\, 2026\nReception: July 10\, 6-9 PM (Awards at 8 PM) \nSlice celebrates the diversity of expression in our region with an array of sculpture\, prints\, paintings\, and photography created by 36 visual artists. This year marks the 14th anniversary of the Pence’s regional call to artists\, affectionately called Slice. Representing a ‘slice’ of work fresh from the studio produced by new and established artists working in the state\, this annual juried exhibit has quickly gained a reputation for displaying innovative and thought-provoking work. The selected work is chosen by the juror for its merit rather than its ability to fit within any particular theme or concept. As with any juried ‘open theme’ selection\, the connections between the artworks can prove to be mind-bending or head-scratching. \nGioia Fonda is this year’s juror of Slice. Fonda is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in two-dimensional media (painting\, drawing\, sewing\, and photography) with occasional forays in sculpture\, social practice\, and public art. She tends to work in a colorful and non-objective manner\, but just under the surface\, her work is often imbued with storytelling and narrative. She has a bi-coastal art education\, having earned a BFA at the California College of the Arts and an MFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Gioia is a dedicated member of the Sacramento art community\, contributing as an artist\, curator\, jurist\, and collaborator. She is also a tenured professor of art at Sacramento City College\, where she teaches painting\, drawing\, and design. Her work has been exhibited widely throughout Northern California and is held in many private and public collections throughout the U.S. \nImage: Michael Larson\, “Day Turns to Night #2”

SUMMARY:Mirabel Wigon: Earth Stars
DESCRIPTION:Mirabel Wigon: Earth Stars\nExhibit: July 10 – August 16\, 2026\nReception: July 10\, 6-9 PM (Free) \nMirabel Wigon’s Earth Stars brings together her expansive new series of botanical inspired paintings. Working in oil and acrylic on canvas\, her paintings have an illustrative quality\, immersing the viewer in imaginative worlds where flora works in tandem with geometric forms. Contrasting elements of line and shape collaborate with one another\, inventing dynamic universes with enchanting qualities. The surreal nature of her paintings is augmented by the use of augmented reality technology\, in which viewers can see forms take 3D form. As if depicting evolutionary scenes\, Wigon creates dioramas of sublime floral transformation. \nImage: Mirabel Wigon\, “Celestial Lattice”

SUMMARY:Surface Tension by Roma Devanbu
DESCRIPTION:ROMA DEVANBU\nSURFACE TENSION\nJuly 3 – August 2\, 2026 \nSecond Saturday Reception July 11th\, 5-8 PM \nRoma Devanbu has been making and exhibiting her paintings and mix-media work for decades. In Surface Tension\, her first exhibit exclusively of photographs\, we see her hungry painters eye hunting and gathering brush marks\, patterns and textures in the wide world around her. \nDevanbu says “Inside the studio I manipulate materials. I rub\, tear\, fold\, cut\, glue and paint to create images on paper and canvas. When I leave the studio my creative actions gain a broader context and I understand my gestures as echoes of larger elemental forces acting on natural and man-made surfaces.” \nThe photographs in this exhibition are records of a physical world in which materials collide\, collaborate\, stretch\, erode\, rust\, scratch\, drape\, freeze and embrace. \nThe subjects are approached in an unapologetically straight forward manner\, presenting the plain facts within the scope of her viewfinder. But\, each title includes a date and time\, down to the second\, reminding us that the unique set of circumstances is temporary and will be disrupted by the influence of reorganization or entropy. \nThe exhibition is dedicated to the memory of the gallerist/photo historian Alan Klotz and the photographer/educator Philip Perkis. Devanbu first met and studied with Klotz and Perkis while earning her MFA in painting from Pratt Institute in the mid 1980’s. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nRoma Devanbu is a long time member of Axis Gallery and its current president. She is a studio resident at Verge Center for the Arts. Devanbu holds a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University\, an MFA from Pratt Institute and studied Asian Art History for one year at the University of Baroda in India. She was a full time tenured faculty member at Bergen Community College in NJ before moving to Davis\, CA where she lives with her husband\, the computer scientist Premkumar Devanbu. Her work is in private and corporate collections in the US and abroad and can be seen in many Northern California hospitals. For more info visit her website at roma.devanbu.com.

SUMMARY:Who are Orientals: Magenta Realism
DESCRIPTION:SHARON TSAO\nWHO ARE ORIENTALS: MAGENTA REALISM\nJuly 3 – August 2\, 2026\nSecond Saturday Reception: July 11\, 5–8 PM \nAbout forty years ago\, when I first came to California\, I was told that I was “Oriental.” I was also told that certain tables and chests were “Oriental\,” and that a particular decorative style was likewise considered “Oriental\,” even though these things looked unfamiliar to me. \nThe works in this exhibition are largely produced in what I was told is an “Oriental” style or manner. They originate from dried Boston ivy vines resembling twisted tree branches\, gathered after years of growth without human intervention and coated with an artificial magenta surface. \nThe application of magenta coating violently interrupts this natural index. Historically\, magenta is among the first fully synthetic modern pigments\, inseparable from industrial chemistry\, mechanical reproduction\, and the chromatic excess of modernity. Here\, color no longer functions descriptively\, but operatively. The magenta surface transforms the dead vines into unstable signs oscillating between the imagined seductions of the “Oriental” and the chromatic excess of industrial modernity\, between contamination and ritual\, and between transcendence and artifice. If the branches retain the temporality of decay\, the color introduces what Jean Baudrillard might describe as the logic of simulation: reality intensified precisely through its artificiality. \nThe works also echo a reversed form of classical Chinese literati aesthetics. Where traditional literati painting often pursued “compression through weathered emptiness” — reducing the world into ink\, void\, and gesture — these works enact a compression through chromatic saturation. The tangled vine becomes a condensed structure of historical memory\, while magenta operates almost as a contemporary counterpart to ink: not natural\, but hyper-artificial; not withdrawn\, but aggressively present. \nSuspended between objecthood and theatricality\, ruin and ornament\, realism and hallucination\, the works propose a different understanding of realism itself. Reality here is not achieved through representation\, but through direct material presence complicated by cultural coding\, synthetic color\, and the unstable perceptual systems through which contemporary viewers encounter nature. \nJoin us at Axis Gallery\, located at 625 S Street in Sacramento’s historic R Street Corridor\, within the Verge Center for the Arts building. The gallery has exhibited innovative contemporary art for over 35 years and continues to serve as a vital space for artists to explore\, connect\, and share work outside the commercial sphere.\nGallery hours: Friday–Sunday\, 12–5 PM \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nSharon Tsao is a sculptor\, art historian\, and educator whose work explores the intersections of nature\, memory\, cultural identity\, and material transformation. She received a B.A. in Sculpture from the China Academy of Art in 1982 and earned a Ph.D. in Art History from Stanford University in 1996. Tsao has taught Art History at Postsecondary Educational institutions\, where she supervised graduate research in art history.\nHer works have been exhibited\, collected\, and auctioned internationally\, and are held in private and public collections in Asia\, North America\, and Europe.

SUMMARY:21st National Juried Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:AXIS GALLERY\n21st ANNUAL NATIONAL JURIED COMPETITION\nAugust 7–30\, 2026 \nSecond Saturday Reception August 8\, 2026\, 5–8 PM \nAxis Gallery presents the 21st Annual National Juried Competition\, a group exhibition featuring works selected by juror Sharon Butler\, founder of Two Coats of Paint. The exhibition includes works by artists from around the country in a variety of mediums. \nJUROR’S STATEMENT\nThe Axis Gallery received 658 submissions to an open call\, and I could have selected five exhibitions instead of one without feeling professionally compromised. Narrowing such a high- quality profusion down to a single hang was a real challenge. Whereas traditional thematic trawls tend to be self-limiting\, open calls like this one afford the juror no circumscribing guidance – only that of quality on the terms artists set for themselves. And the work I perused made it clear that artists throughout the country and across genres are richly engaged in conversations about ideas\, materials\, emotional content\, and formal issues. The show’s density is testament to the abundance of pieces that were simply too good to leave out. \nSince no theme was handed down in advance\, my job was to arrive at a selection piece by piece\, submission by submission\, until I saw the show take shape from what artists are concerned about and refracting through their work right now. I encountered a gnawing disquiet\, an insistence on making things by hand\, an interest in place\, and the use of materiality and process as metaphor. Although I don’t believe most of the submitting artists know one another\, the selected works seem connected\, as if they might mutually complete sentences. And indeed\, one virtue of an open call is that it is liable to produce an unplanned consensus – a kind of serendipity that might elude a more deliberately curated process with a long list of criteria. \nI’ll admit my own slight bias in the selection. I’m somewhat less interested in traditional technical skill than in inventiveness – in what happens when an artist reaches for something that isn’t supposed to be an art material at all\, and in instances when artists find meaningful content in improbable subject matter. Some of the pieces here employ images or objects that may challenge the conventional view of what counts as art\, and I kept coming back to those. This exhibition\, then\, represents one person’s path through a terrific field of entries. It is\, I hope\, a generous and thoughtful selection. I remain thoroughly impressed that when the Axis Gallery asked a wide\, unfiltered public to submit work\, the items that came in response were at once more surprising and more complementary than I had any right to expect. \n– Sharon Butler\, July 2026 \nABOUT THE JUROR\nSharon Butler is a painter and the founder of Two Coats of Paint\, an award-winning NYC blogazine about painting. She has held solo exhibitions in at CLEA RSKY\, Jennifer Baahng Gallery\, Theodore Gallery\, Pocket Utopia\, and Central Fine Arts (all in NYC); in Connecticut at Slater Memorial Museum\, Real Art Ways\, and Furnace Art on Paper Archive; and in the university galleries at University of Alabama\, University of Connecticut\, and SUNY Westchester. Her paintings are characterized by a tendency toward Casualism\, a term she coined in an article published in The Brooklyn Rail to describe an approach to painting that values imperfection\, incompleteness\, and process over traditional color theory\, pleasing composition\, and polished forms.\nHer work has been featured in publications such as The Brooklyn Rail\, Hyperallergic\, artcritical\, The New Criterion\, and New York Magazine. She has received awards from Creative Capital and the Warhol Foundation\, Yaddo\, Connecticut Commission on the Arts\, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. \nShe lives and works in Long Island City\, Queens.

SUMMARY:Susannah Israel: Procession
DESCRIPTION:The John Natsoulas Gallery is thrilled to announce the exhibition of Susannah Israel’s distinctive ceramics. Her individualized figures each possess an openness of expression\, inviting close contemplation and investigation into their stories. \nTo be exhibited on the second floor of the gallery\, her body of work is a reflection of the humor she uses to confront the struggles of life. Her emphasis of gesture takes an equal role to her interest in abstraction and distortion. The dynamic figures\, some in conversation with a paired piece\, offer viewers discrete narratives to consider\, even as the overarching themes remain cohesive. The wide date-range present in this exhibition provides insight into her developments. Her repetitious use of unglazed terracotta-colored clay reminds viewers of the earthen and historical origins of her medium. The warmth and rich coloration of each figure shines\, even when the figure is subsumed entirely with glazes and surface designs. \nOriginally from New York\, the artist studied ceramics for some time at Pratt Art Institute with Byron Temple\, and she later earned both a BA and an MFA from San Francisco State University. Her extensive teaching at numerous institutions in California took her to schools across the state. Her work has been exhibited throughout the world\, and her sculpture is found in museums\, private art collections\, and public art sites throughout the United States. Her career distinctions include the Fletcher Challenge Premier Award\, a Virginia Groot Foundation Award\, and residencies at the Archie Bray and the Doelger Art Center. Her extensive output of writing primarily showcases and uplifts talented artists who are typically excluded from galleries and museums. \nThe exhibition’s opening reception will be held on Friday August 21\, from 7 to 9 PM. It will feature live music and refreshments.
