SUMMARY:Flyway Nights Speaker Series: Fremont Weir Big Notch Project
DESCRIPTION:Fremont Weir Big Notch Project\nJosh Martinez\, Restoration Ecology Unit Manager\, CA Dept. of Water Resources\nThursday\, January 5 – 7 p.m. – REGISTER\n\n\n\nThe Yolo Bypass Salmonid Habitat Restoration and Fish Passage Project\, or Big Notch Project\, is a joint State and federal project between the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) and the United States Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation). This project provides essential benefits to various native fish species\, including threatened and endangered Chinook salmon\, steelhead\, and sturgeon. Since the construction of the Fremont Weir in the 1930’s\, the northern Yolo Bypass has been a literal dead end for many adult fish migrating upstream to their spawning grounds. The Big Notch Project provides a critical point of entry back into the Sacramento River\, allowing these fish to continue their migration. Additionally\, juvenile salmon and steelhead journeying downstream to the Pacific Ocean will have access to thousands of acres of Yolo Bypass floodplain rearing habitat through the operable Big Notch gates. Off-channel rearing habitat\, such as floodplains\, provides juvenile fish access to an abundant food supply not available in the mainstem river. Considering nearly 95% of historic off-channel salmon rearing habitat has been disconnected from the river by dams and levees\, the Big Notch Project represents a significant recovery of this important ecosystem function. \nJosh Martinez is a Senior Environmental Scientist with the California Department of Water Resources. As manager of the Restoration Ecology Unit\, Josh has spent the last 14 years working on habitat restoration and fish passage projects in the Yolo Bypass. \nFlyway Nights is a monthly speaker series highlighting environmental issues\, current research topics in conservation\, and natural history of Northern California.\nThe first Thursday of the month from November through April – 7 p.m.\nEvents are via Zoom. Registration is required.\nTalks are an hour to 90 minutes in duration.\nA $10 donation is suggested. \nAfter the program\, recordings are added to our\nYouTube Channel. https://www.youtube.com/YoloBasinFoundation \n

SUMMARY:Poetry Night Reading Series: Allegra Silberstein with Jean Biegun
DESCRIPTION:The Poetry Night Reading Series is excited to feature Allegra Silberstein and Jean Biegun at 7 PM on Thursday\, January 5th\, 2023\, on the first floor of the John Natsoulas Gallery\, 521 1st Street in Davis. \nAllegra Silberstein was the first poet laureate of the City of Davis. Originally from Wisconsin\, Silberstein has lived in California since 1963. In addition to three chapbooks of poetry\, she has been widely published in print journals and online publications. Her first book of poems\, West of Angels\, was published by Cold River Press in March of 2015\, and in 2022\, Kelsay Books published her new chapbook\, Dancing with the Morning Breeze. \nSilberstein dances and performs with Pamela Trokanski’s Third Stage Company\, and sings with the Davis Threshold Choir. At age 92\, Allegra has been a favorite audience member at regional poetry readings for decades. Allegra lives on an acre of land in South Davis where tending to the earth enriches her spirit. \nJean Biegun began writing in 2000\, a few years before retiring from a career in special education with the Chicago Public Schools. Her poems have appeared in over 100 journals\, anthologies\, art exhibits\, and even in a gumball machine at a state poetry convention. In 2022\, she received the Eastern Iowa Review’s Christine Award for Best Prose Poem of 2021. Her work was included in Best of Mad Swirl 2021 Anthology\, and her chapbook Hitchhikers to Eden was published by Kelsay Books. Gyroscope Review recently nominated her poem “Edge Effects” for a Pushcart Prize.  \nDuring her retirement in Manitowoc\, Wisconsin\, Biegun initiated several projects to bring poetry to the public. She wrote for the nature center’s seasonal newsletter\, organized and hosted open mics\, and curated events that involved teams of community leaders reading favorite poems alongside poet partners who read their response pieces. She still participates long-distance in an annual ekphrastic collaboration and gallery exhibit with Wisconsin artists. \nThis event will take place indoors at the John Natsoulas Gallery (521 1st Street) at 7 PM on Thursday\, January 5th\, 2023. An open mic will follow the featured performers. Open mic performances will be limited to four minutes or two items\, whichever is shorter. As Franklin Delano Roosevelt said\, “Be sincere\, be brief\, be seated.” Sincerity will not be enforced. The open mic list typically fills by 7 PM\, so please arrive early if you would like to perform something during the 8 o’clock hour. \nWe recommend that you wear a mask to Poetry Night. According to a Yolo County December 6 press release\, “This winter is the first in several years where we are seeing significant flu and RSV activity\, in addition to COVID-19\, so we are now making masking recommendations based on all circulating respiratory viruses\, not just on COVID\,” said Yolo County Health Officer Dr. Aimee Sisson. “Wearing a high-quality mask indoors is a great way to protect yourself and others from respiratory viruses like flu\, RSV\, and COVID-19.” Stay safe so you can write more poems! \nThe Poetry Night Reading Series\, taking place on the first and third Thursdays of the month at 7 PM\, is generously supported by the people and poets of the Sacramento Valley\, and by John Natsoulas and the staff at the John Natsoulas Gallery. Your host will be Dr. Andy Jones\, the poet laureate emeritus of the City of Davis. This event is supported by Katerina Hanks\, producer\, and Timothy Nutter\, sound and lighting engineer. \nFind the Facebook page for this event at https://www.facebook.com/events/885415145985316/

SUMMARY:Mike Rucker
DESCRIPTION:A long-time advocate of positive psychology and a charter member of the International Positive Psychology Association\, Mike Rucker is drawn to fun because—juxtaposed to happiness—fun is as unique\, beautiful\, and interesting as each of us. \nMike is known as a health influencer and a health writer. After a string of misfortune in 2016\, including his younger brother’s untimely death\, Mike began to critically evaluate modern approaches to happiness. During this journey\, he had an epiphany: his pursuit of happiness was actually making him … unhappy.  Mike realized trying to be “happy” only drew his attention to what was missing. Fixating on his lack of happiness made him label himself as unhappy\, and he came to realize that maladaptive label was bleeding into his identity. This left him with the question: If deliberately chasing happiness leaves me miserable\, what’s the alternative?  Then\, after years of research and trial and error\, a second crucial insight clicked into place: We can’t always make ourselves happy\, but we all possess the agency to find ways to be more joyful and have more fun. \nAbout the Book \nGrounded in current research\, accessible science\, and practical recommendations\, The Fun Habit explains how you can build having fun into an actionable and effortless habit and why doing so will help you become a healthier\, more joyful\, more productive person. In the vein of Year of Yes\, 10% Happier\, and Atomic Habits\, The Fun Habit is an inspiring and motivational guidebook that you will want to share with everyone in your life.

DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk & Demo: \nSaturday\, January 14\, 1-2 PM (FREE) \nKelley Mogilka will talk about her current series of paintings\, sharing her method of working from models to compose her evocative subjects.  \n  \nThe Elusive Muse: New Work by Kelley Mogilka \nExhibit dates: January 7 – February 3\, 2023 \nReception: Friday\, January 13\, 6 – 9 PM \nAddress: Pence Gallery – 212 D Street\, Davis\, CA 95616 \nKelley Mogilka’s figurative paintings and drawings center on capturing the elusive muse\, a creative force that flows from brush to canvas. By working from a model\, she looks for this inspiration in the subtle gestures\, glances\, or poses\, which often evoke a presence that is both timeless and ephemeral. Her use of harmonious color and expressive brushwork ultimately reflects an interest in capturing the sitter’s internal state of being. Mogilka was the recipient of the Pence Gallery’s Emerging Artist Award in 2022. \n  \nSponsored by James R. & Suzette M. Smith\, as part of the Pence Gallery Emerging Artist Award.

SUMMARY:8th Annual Global Tea Initiative Colloquium: Tea & Value
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this all day in-person event. Come for part or all. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGTI’s upcoming colloquium\, Tea and Value\, asks: What do we value in tea\, and how do we value it? What goes into judging tea for plucking\, processing\, and blending? How does the industry price tea? Is there value in tea as a medicine? (Dr. Sandra D. Adams\, Tea Extracts and their Value as Antivirals)  What about in the field: when might pests be a good thing? (Dr. Eric Scott\, Making the best of pests: the value of bug-bitten tea and barriers to its spread). What about tea in history?  How did it fare in the Japanese economy\, US tariff practices\, and US consumer choices in the 19th century? (Dr. Robert Hellyer\, Tea in Modern American and Japanese History—Locating Economic\, Cultural & Social ‘Value’). And no less\, how do social groups find value in tea for wellness and to affirm advocacy for fair political and economic practices? (Dr. Stephanie Y. Evans\, Black Tea History: Roots of Wellness in the African Diaspora). \nThis Year’s Speakers\n\nSandra D. Adams\, Ph.D. Professor\, Biology\, Montclair State University\nTea Extracts and their Value as Antivirals \nEpigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)\, a green tea polyphenol possesses antioxidant\, antibacterial\, anticancer\, and antiviral properties.  The chemical modification of EGCG to palmitate-EGCG and EGCG-stearate increased its lipid solubility and stability.  Black tea extracts\, rich in theaflavin polyphenols\, have been shown to have antioxidant\, anticancer\, anti-inflammatory\, antimicrobial\, and antiviral activities.  Tea polyphenols have demonstrated antiviral properties against several viruses\, including Herpes simplex virus I and II. Herpes simplex virus infections are considered significant health concerns in the United States and worldwide. The infection cycle of herpes simplex viruses begins when the virion first attaches to\, then fuses with a host cell. Green and black tea extracts were found to block early stages of the herpes simplex virus infection cycle.  Tea extracts have value as potential therapeutic agents to reduce the spread of herpes simplex infections. \n  \n  \n\nDr. Stephanie Y. Evans\, Professor\, Institute for Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies. Affiliate Faculty\, Africana Studies and Center for the Study of Stress\, Trauma\, and Resilience\, Georgia State University \nBlack Tea History: Roots of Wellness in the African Diaspora \nBlack women around the world have written about tea as a tool for health and wellness. This work surveys over 300 memoirs to map a history of traditions from herbal senna and sassafras to pekoe in Kenya and Virginia. Dr. Evans\, a professor of Black women’s intellectual history\, maps stories of infusions through Africa\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Americas. “Black Tea History” argues for the value of teaching and institutionalizing lessons about historical wellness–especially in high-stress professions like higher education. Historical narratives offer lessons for creating internal and external green space. Life writing helps readers identify how tea can support mental\, physical\, spiritual\, and social strategies proven to help\nmanage stress. This work also emphasizes the need for critical analysis of historical wellness in order to not perpetuate harmful myths embedded in past tea traditions and to affirm advocacy for fair political and economic practices. \n  \n\nRobert Hellyer\, Professor\, History\, Wake Forest University \nTea in Modern American and Japanese History—Locating Economic\, Cultural & Social ‘Value’ \nFrom the 1870s extending until the start of WWII\, Japan centered its tea export industry on the United States\, then a predominately green-tea-consuming country. With that bilateral trade as its main backdrop\, this presentation will consider tea’s value to the US government as a source of tariff revenue as well as its economic and social value to especially Midwesterners\, who were the largest consumers of green tea. In addition\, it will examine how in the late nineteenth century\, increased tea production and thus exports to the United States expanded employment opportunities across social classes in a Japan then coalescing as a modern nation-state. Moreover\, it will detail the ways in which a change in American\npreferences—from green to black tea in the 1920s—set in motion Japan’s full adoption of sencha green tea as the most widely-consumed tea\, valued in particular for its health benefits. \n  \n\nEric Scott\, Ph.D.\, Scientific Programmer & Educator\, University of Arizona \nMaking the best of pests: the value of bug-bitten tea and barriers to its spread \nThe strategy of encouraging leafhopper attacks on tea fields and the resulting tea known as Eastern Beauty oolong (东方美人茶 dongfang meiren cha) has been around since the 1930s but has remained a specialty of a few counties in Taiwan for much of its history. However\, the leafhoppers responsible are widespread and found in many tea-growing regions around the world. Why has bug-bitten tea seen such success inside of Taiwan and such minimal spread outside? Leafhopper attack is only one piece of the puzzle—chemical compounds produced in response to leafhopper attack are transformed during tea processing into the characteristic aroma of Eastern Beauty oolong. It’s also a risky strategy—balancing yield loss and quality improvement from leafhoppers is often a matter of experience with few guidelines. Research on the interactions between tea cultivars\, leafhoppers\, and processing in their impacts on tea quality and yield has the potential to expand the catalog of bug-bitten teas to include new locations\, new cultivars\, and new processing methods. Climate change will also impact tea\, leafhoppers\, and their interactions\, and must be taken into consideration as well.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating discussion with author Tracy Perkins on Jan. 25. \nPerkins will discuss her book Evolution of a Movement: Four Decades of California Environmental Justice Activism with Dr. Beth Rose Middleton Manning\, Director of the Environmental and Climate Justice Hub and Associate Director of the UC Davis Institute of the Environment. \nThis discussion will take place from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday\, Jan. 25 in the multi-purpose room of the UC Davis Student Community Center. The event is free and everyone is encouraged to attend. \nAbout Evolution of a Movement \nDespite living and working in California\, one of the county’s most environmentally progressive states\, environmental justice activists have spent decades fighting for clean air to breathe\, clean water to drink\, and safe\, healthy communities. Evolution of a Movement tells their story — from the often-raucous protests of the 1980s and 1990s to activists’ growing presence inside the halls of the state capitol in the 2000s and 2010s. Tracy E. Perkins traces how shifting political contexts combined with activists’ own efforts to institutionalize their work within nonprofits and state structures. By revealing these struggles and transformations\, Perkins offers a new lens for understanding environmental justice activism in California. \nDrawing on case studies and 125 interviews with activists from Sacramento to the California-Mexico border\, Perkins explores the successes and failures of the environmental justice movement in California. She shows why some activists have moved away from the disruptive “outsider” political tactics common in the movement’s early days and embraced traditional political channels of policy advocacy\, electoral politics\, and working from within the state’s political system to enact change. Although some see these changes as a sign of the growing sophistication of the environmental justice movement\, others point to the potential of such changes to blunt grassroots power. At a time when environmental justice scholars and activists face pressing questions about the best route for effecting meaningful change\, this book provides insight into the strengths and limitations of social movement institutionalization. \n
