SUMMARY:Poetry Night Reading Series: Rooja Mohassessy with Teresa Pham-Carsillo
DESCRIPTION:The Poetry Night Reading Series is excited to feature Rooja Mohassessy and Teresa Pham-Carsillo at 7 PM on Thursday\, February 3rd\, 2023\, on the first floor of the John Natsoulas Gallery\, 521 1st Street in Davis. \nRooja Mohassessy is an Iranian-born poet. She is a 2022 MacDowell Fellow and a recent graduate of the Pacific University MFA program in Oregon. Her debut collection\, When Your Sky Runs Into Mine\, was the winner of the 22nd Annual Elixir Poetry Prize and will be released by Elixir Press in February\, 2023. When Your Sky Runs Into Mine comprises ekphrastic poems that respond to the art of the prominent Iranian painter and sculptor Bahman Mohassess (1931-2010). The poems address such universal themes as coming of age\, sexuality\, and the challenges faced by child immigrants displaced as a result of war and political turmoil. Mohassessy’ poems and reviews have appeared or are forthcoming in Narrative Magazine\, Poet Lore\, RHINO Poetry\, Southern Humanities Review\, CALYX Journal\, Ninth Letter\, Cream City Review\, The Adroit Journal\, New Letters\, The Florida Review\, Poetry Northwest\, The Rumpus\, and elsewhere.  \nTeresa Pham-Carsillo is a Vietnamese American writer of poetry and fiction. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative Writing and Communications from the University of California\, Davis. Her published works have appeared or are forthcoming in numerous publications\, including Poetry Magazine\, The Southern Review\, Black Warrior Review\, Salt Hill Journal\, The Minnesota Review\, Smartish Pace\, and Passengers Journal. She was selected as a finalist for the 2022 Adina Talve-Goodman Fellowship and was nominated by Salt Hill Journal for the 2021 Pushcart Prize in Fiction. In her spare time\, Teresa volunteers as a poetry mentor at Chapter 510\, an Oakland-based creative writing\, bookmaking\, and publishing center for Black\, brown\, and queer youth ages 8-19. Teresa currently resides in Napa\, California\, and is working on her first full-length collection of poetry. She can be found online at www.teresaphamcarsillo.com. \nThis event will take place on the first floor of the John Natsoulas Gallery (521 1st Street) at 7 PM on Thursday\, February 3rd\, 2023. An open mic will follow the featured performers. Open mic performances will be limited to five minutes or two items\, whichever is shorter. As the Bard says\, “Brevity is the soul of wit.” The open mic list typically fills by 7 PM\, so please sign up early if you would like to perform something during the 8 o’clock hour. \nWe recommend that you wear a mask to Poetry Night. According to a Yolo County December 6 press release\, “This winter is the first in several years where we are seeing significant flu and RSV activity\, in addition to COVID-19\, so we are now making masking recommendations based on all circulating respiratory viruses\, not just on COVID\,” said Yolo County Health Officer Dr. Aimee Sisson. “Wearing a high-quality mask indoors is a great way to protect yourself and others from respiratory viruses like flu\, RSV\, and COVID-19.” \nThe Poetry Night Reading Series\, taking place on first and third Thursdays of the month at 7 PM\, is generously supported by the people and poets of the Sacramento Valley\, and by John Natsoulas and the staff at the John Natsoulas Gallery. Your host will be Dr. Andy Jones\, the poet laureate emeritus of the City of Davis. This event is supported by Katerina Hanks\, producer\, Poetry Night Reading Series.

SUMMARY:Davis Humanities Institute Book Chat: Prof. Alyssa Ney with Prof. David Glick
DESCRIPTION:Book Chat: Alyssa Ney- World in the Wave Function: A Metaphysics for Quantum Physics (2021) \nIf quantum theories of the world are true-and empirical evidence suggests they are-what do they tell us about us\, and the world? How should quantum theories make us reevaluate our classical conceptions of material objects? Nearly a century after the development of quantum theories\, a consensus has yet to emerge. Ney here defends and develops a particular framework for understanding the world as it is described by quantum theories. This framework was initially suggested by Schrödinger in the 1920’s and was further defended as an account of reality by two philosophers of physics in the 1990’s who described it as a necessary point of view for those who argue that quantum theories are correct representations of our world. This framework is called wave function realism\, which interprets quantum theories such that its central object is the quantum wave function\, interpreted as a field on an extremely high-dimension space. This theory views us\, and all objects\, as ultimately constituted out of the wave function\, and though we seem to occupy three dimensions\, the fundamental spatial framework of quantum worlds consists of many more dimensions. Ney argues for and advances this view\, with the goal of making a case for how this theory how it might be applied to relativistic quantum theories\, including quantum field theories. Her conclusion develops an account of how we as human beings might ultimately see ourselves and the objects around us as constituted out of the wave function. \nAlyssa Ney is a Professor of Philosophy and Philosophy Graduate Advisor at the University of California\, Davis\, where she has taught since July 2015. She received her MA and PhD in Philosophy from Brown University\, her MS in Physics from UC Davis\, and her BS in Physics and Philosophy from Tulane University. She is Associate Editor at The British Journal for the Philosophy of Science and past-President of the Society for the Metaphysics of Science. Her research focuses primarily on fundamentality\, the unity of science\, and the interpretation of quantum theories.

SUMMARY:Zach Norris
DESCRIPTION:Update: This event is currently at capacity.  \nMondavi Center Presenting Program\nIn his newest book\, community leader and lawyer Zach Norris lays out a radical way to shift the conversation about public safety away from fear and punishment and toward growth and support systems for our families and communities. The author calls for a dismantling of the Us vs. Them mentality and replaces it with a care-based approach. By bridging the divides and building relationships with one another\, Norris believes we should dedicate ourselves to strategic investments in the areas of stability and well-being\, such as healthcare\, housing\, education and living-wage jobs. In a time when the most powerful institutions in the United States are embracing the repressive and racist systems that keep many communities struggling and in fear\, we must reimagine what safety means. \n“When we devote resources to programs that make the most vulnerable people in our society healthier\, more educated\, and more engaged in meaningful pursuits\, we make all of America safer.” — Zach Norris \nOriginally published in hardcover as We Keep Us Safe: Building Secure\, Just\, and Inclusive Communities\, Defund Fear: Safety Without Policing\, Prisons\, and Punishment is a blueprint of how to hold people accountable while still holding them in community. The result reinstates full humanity and agency for everyone who has been dehumanized and traumatized\, so they can participate fully in life\, in society\, and in the fabric of our democracy.

SUMMARY:Pacific Encounters: 2023 Templeton Colloquium in Art History
DESCRIPTION:The Pacific\, California’s neighbor to the west\, is largest of the planet’s oceans and home to many societies and cultures. Pacific peoples have for centuries connected to each other and to the bigger world\, despite vast expanses involved in traversing this region of the globe. The Pacific is also the site of fanciful modern projection: a space of tourist appeal\, strategic political value\, philosophical speculation\, and colonial exploitation.  The arts of Pacific peoples give insight into this region’s histories and can foster better understanding of its importance. The 2023 Templeton Colloquium in Art History takes as its theme an ocean as an art-historical space. Emphasis will be on Hawaiian and Māori societies\, which invite deeper consideration of this fascinating global sector and its visual culture. \nThe 2023 Templeton Colloquium in Art History will be held at the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art on Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. with a reception to follow. \nSPEAKERS\nStacy Kamehiro\, Associate Professor in History of Art and Visual Culture at UC Santa Cruz\, is currently working on a book project\, Objects of the Nation: Hawaiʻi at the World Fairs\, which examines collections and exhibitions of Hawaiian material culture and natural history in local and international contexts. Her recent scholarship attends to the politics of art organizations following the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy; the place of overseas travel in Kalākaua’s efforts to maintain Hawaiʻi’s independence; the roles of Hawaiian featherwork as cultural affirmation\, political statement\, and historical subject; and US empire and art history. She has also published on textiles\, architecture\, racialized advertising images in nineteenth-century American trade card lithography\, and scientific images produced during Pacific voyaging expeditions. She is also the executive editor of Pacific Arts: Journal of the Pacific Arts Association. \nKamehiro’s talk will address “Worlding the Kingdom of Hawai`i: King Kalākaua and the Art of International Relations.” \nKailani Polzak is an Assistant Professor in History of Art and Visual Culture at UC Santa Cruz. Polzak’s research focuses on European visual culture in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries with particular attention to histories of science\, aesthetic philosophy\, race\, colonialism\, and intercultural contact in Oceania. Her current book project\, Difference Over Distance: Visualizing Contact between Europe and Oceania\, examines the graphic and printed works created in relation to so-called “Voyages of Discovery” conducted by Britain\, France\, and Russia in Aotearoa New Zealand\, Australia\, and Hawaiʻi in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. \nPolzak’s presentation will discuss “Regarding Kamehameha I: Class\, Gender\, and Genre in the Portrait(s) by Louis Choris.” \nNgarino Ellis isAssociate Professor in Art History at University of Auckland\, New Zealand whose field of research is in Māori art history with a focus on identifying\, promoting and recuperating matauranga in relation to art forms\, art practices\, artists and theories. Her new project\, entitled Nga Taonga o Wharawhara: The Worlds of Maori Body Adornment\, brings together oral\, taonga and archival research into the ceremonial\, political and economic roles in Maori communities. Ellis explores how adornments made from wood\, bone\, stone\, shell and pounamu as well as harakeke and feathers were worn in and through the body\, including mata whakarewa/skin painting\, and to discover ancestral practices and taonga which can reveal new understandings of our past\, as well as the importance of the continuum as adornments are made today. \nNgarino will present “Taonga Paraoa\, taonga Pasifika\, taonga Māori: Tracing the ancestors through Māori art history.” \nThe respondent will be Jennifer Wagelie\, Academic Liaison at the Manetti Shrem Museum. Wagelie’s area of study is the art of the Pacific Islands\, specifically Māori taonga (art)\, with other research interests in the history of museums\, collections\, and exhibitions. She is the co-editor of the 2021 publication Mannequins and Museums: Power and Resistance on Display\, and her current research focuses on the early twentieth-century English ethnographic dealer William O.
