SUMMARY:Adam Aron
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Apr 4 2023 6:00pm – 7:00pm \n\nJoin us at The Avid Reader for a discussion with Adam Aron regarding his new book\, The Climate Crisis.\n\nAbout the Book:\nWhy\, despite all we know about the causes and harms of global heating\, has so little effective action been taken to cut greenhouse gas emissions\, and what we can do to change that? This book explains the mechanisms and impacts of the climate crisis\, traces the history and reasons behind the lack of serious effort to combat it\, describes some people’s ongoing scepticism and how to shift it\, and motivates an urgent program of action. It argues that the pathway to stopping dangerous global heating will require a much larger mobilization of advocacy and activism to impel decision makers to abandon fossil fuels\, and transition to renewable energy and electrification embedded in a political and social framework guided by justice principles. It is an excellent resource for students and researchers on the climate crisis\, the need for a renewable energy transition\, and the current blocks to progress.Adam Aron is a psychology professor at University of California San Diego. His research focuses on “the social psychology of collective action on the climate crisis”.

SUMMARY:Poetry Night Reading Series: Maya Khosla and Lisa Dominguez Abraham
DESCRIPTION:The Poetry Night Reading Series is excited to feature Maya Khosla and Lisa Dominguez Abraham at 7 PM on Thursday\, April 6th\, 2023\, on the third floor of the John Natsoulas Gallery\, 521 1st Street in Davis. \nMaya Khosla is a wildlife biologist and writer. As Poet Laureate Emerita of Sonoma County (2018–2020)\, she directed Shelter in Poetry films for students and families. Khosla’s essays have appeared in Wild Hope\, Flyway\, Yes Magazine\, Humans and Nature\, and elsewhere. Her poetry collections are All the Fires of Wind and Light (Sixteen Rivers Press; 2020 PEN Oakland/Josephine Miles Award)\, Keel Bone (Bear Star Press; Dorothy Brunsman Poetry Prize) and in Heart of the Tearing (Red Dust Press).  \nLisa Dominguez Abraham’s collection Mata Hari Blows a Kiss won the Swan Scythe Chapbook Contest\, and her book Coyote Logic was published by Blue Oak Press. She has recent work in COMP: an interdisciplinary journal and Puerto del Sol. Newly returned to the San Francisco Bay Area where she grew up\, she lives in Richmond. \nBoth our featured poets have work appearing in They Rise Like a Wave\, an anthology that captures the dynamic and shifting landscape of Asian American poetry. As we can learn from the back cover of this collection\, They Rise Like a Wave features “poetics that continues to grow and transform\, a poetics that continues by breaking boundaries\, experimenting with language\, and revitalizing a historically narrow and oppressive Western canon.” \nThis event will take place on the third floor of the John Natsoulas Gallery (521 1st Street) at 7 PM on Thursday\, April 6th\, 2023. An open mic will follow the featured performers. Open mic performances will be limited to five minutes or two items\, whichever is shorter. As Robert Southey says\, “Be brief; for it is with words as with sunbeams – the more they are condensed\, the deeper they burn.” The open mic list typically fills by 6:50 PM\, so please arrive early if you would like to perform something during the 8 o’clock hour. Attendees who request to be added to the list after 7 PM will be invited to try again at a subsequent event. \nWe recommend that you wear a mask to Poetry Night. According to a Yolo County December 6 press release\, “This winter is the first in several years where we are seeing significant flu and RSV activity\, in addition to COVID-19\, so we are now making masking recommendations based on all circulating respiratory viruses\, not just on COVID\,” said Yolo County Health Officer Dr. Aimee Sisson. “Wearing a high-quality mask indoors is a great way to protect yourself and others from respiratory viruses like flu\, RSV\, and COVID-19.” This spring\, we will likely return to the roof sculpture garden where we can all breathe freely. \nThe Poetry Night Reading Series\, taking place on first and third Thursdays of the month at 7 PM\, is generously supported by the people and poets of the Sacramento Valley\, and by John Natsoulas and the staff at the John Natsoulas Gallery. Your host will be Dr. Andy Jones\, the poet laureate emeritus of the City of Davis. This event is supported by Katerina Hanks\, producer of The Poetry Night Reading Series. SUMMARY:The 16th Annual Armistead Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Coming of (R)age: Black Girlhood + Media\nFriday\, April 7\n4:30–6 PM\nManetti Shrem Museum \nIn her article “Coming of (R)age: A New Genre for Contemporary Narratives about Black Girlhood\,” Dr. Lashon Daley argues that Black girls do not come of age in mediated representations of girlhood in contemporary films. Rather\, they come of (r)age. In this talk\, Daley discusses how she uses text-mining software to investigate whether coming of (r)age is purely a theoretical framework or if there is also quantitative data to support her claim. \nDaley is the director of the National Center for the Study of Children’s Literature\, an assistant professor of English and Comparative Literature with a specialization in Black Children’s Literature\, and an affiliate faculty of the Digital Humanities Initiative at San Diego State University. \nOrganized by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Co-sponsored by the Manetti Shrem Museum.

SUMMARY:Trash Talk: Climate Change & Recycling Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join Cool Davis and the City of Davis for a webinar that explores the connection between the waste we produce and climate change. This webinar will provide a review of 2022 Statewide solid waste laws under SB 1383 and how they are designed to impact climate change. We will also cover the most frequently asked questions about solid waste\, including if we should still bother recycling and sorting our waste (spoiler alert—yes\, we should!)\, why Davis collects paper separately from other recyclables\, where all our waste goes and more. \nDo you have an item that you’re not sure how to dispose of? Chances are\, you’re not the only one! Take a picture of the item and send it to PWWeb@CityofDavis.org so we can discuss it at the end of the webinar. \nRegister for the webinar here: https://www.cooldavis.org/civicrm/event/register/?reset=1&id=199

SUMMARY:Davis Humanities Institute Book Chat: Queering Mesoamerican Diasporas
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK\nActs of remembering offer a path to decolonization for Indigenous peoples forcibly dislocated from their culture\, knowledge\, and land. Susy J. Zepeda highlights the often overlooked yet intertwined legacies of Chicana feminisms and queer decolonial theory through the work of select queer Indígena cultural producers and thinkers. By tracing the ancestries and silences of gender-nonconforming people of color\, she addresses colonial forms of epistemic violence and methods of transformation\, in particular spirit research. Zepeda also uses archival materials\, raised ceremonial altars\, and analysis of decolonial artwork in conjunction with oral histories to explore the matriarchal roots of Chicana/x and Latina/x feminisms. As she shows\, these feminisms are forms of knowledge that people can remember through Indigenous-centered visual narratives\, cultural wisdom\, and spirit practices. \nA fascinating exploration of hidden Indígena histories and silences\, Queering Mesoamerican Diasporas blends scholarship with spirit practices to reimagine the root work\, dis/connection to land\, and the political decolonization of Xicana/x peoples.

SUMMARY:Randall Balmer – Bad Faith: Race and the Rise of the Religious Right
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 13\, 2023\n4:30-5 PM Reception\n5-6:30 PM Lecture\nManetti Shrem Museum \nThere is a common narrative about the rise of the Religious Right in the U.S. — that American evangelicals entered the political arena as a unified front to fight the legality of abortion after the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. The problem is this story simply isn’t true. Scholar Randall Balmer discusses his newest book\, Bad Faith: Race and the Rise of the Religious Right\, which uncovers the roots of evangelical watchwords like “religious freedom” and “family values” while getting to the truth of how this movement began. \nBalmer holds the John Phillips Chair in Religion at Dartmouth College\, Dartmouth’s oldest endowed professorship. He previously was a professor of American religious history at Columbia University. Dr. Balmer has written widely on Christianity’s interrelationships with American politics and in books including God in the White House: How Faith Shaped the Presidency from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush\, The Making of Evangelicalism: From Revivalism to Politics and Beyond and Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory: A Journey into the Evangelical Subculture in America\, which was adapted into an award-winning documentary for PBS. \nOrganized by Professor Allison Coudert\, Department of Religious Studies. Co-sponsored by the Manetti Shrem Museum

SUMMARY:Death’s Futurity: The Visual Life of Black Power
DESCRIPTION:Sampada Aranke in conversation with Essence Harden \nThursday\, April 20 4:30-6 PM \nThis book launch and signing event celebrates Death’s Futurity by Sampada Aranke (Ph.D. ’13). Her book examines the importance of representations of death to Black liberation. Aranke analyzes posters\, photographs\, journalism and films that focus on the murders of Black Panther Party members Lil’ Bobby Hutton\, Fred Hampton and George Jackson to construct a visual history of the 1960s and 1970s Black Power era. By foregrounding the photographed\, collaged\, filmed and drawn Black body\, Aranke demonstrates that corporeality is crucial to the efforts to shape visions of a Black future free from white supremacy. \nSampada Aranke is the co-curator of the museum’s current exhibition Mike Henderson: Before the Fire\, 1965–1985. She is an assistant professor in the Department of Art History\, Theory\, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the director of Mellon Archives Innovation Programs at the Rebuild Foundation\, Chicago. \nEssence Harden is a visual arts curator and program manager at the California African American Museum and an independent arts writer. Harden has curated exhibitions at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE)\, Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD)\, Oakland Museum of California\, El Segundo Museum of Art (ESMoA)\, the Orange County Museum of Art (OMCA) and Art + Practice\, among others.

\nBecause this National Poetry Month event will take place on the gallery roof\, please plan to dress in layers.
