DESCRIPTION:Timothy J. McNeil\, professor in the department of design and director/curator\nof the UC Davis Design Museum\, weaves together exhibition design practice\,\nmethods and techniques within an historical framework for understanding\nhow the discipline contributes to the expanding role of creating experiences\nin his new book\, The Exhibition and Experience Design Handbook. McNeil\nargues that today’s multi-modal\, participatory exhibitions and attractions are\nbound by a desire to convey information\, excite the viewer\, and create social\nand narrative experiences\, and that without design employed effectively\,\nthese experiential moments would not become lasting memories that inform\nand inspire an increasingly sophisticated audience. McNeil designed the\ncurrent exhibition Deborah Butterfield: P.S. These are not horses. Following his\ntalk\, Professor McNeil will sign books and join visitors in the galleries to discuss\nthe exhibition design.\nBooks will be available for purchase at the event. \nOrganized by the Manetti Shrem Museum and the UC Davis Department of Design.

She is assistant director of the Lesley University STEAM Learning Lab in Boston\, Massachusetts\, and author of “Techno-Vernacular Creativity and Innovation” (MIT Press 2021)\, which offers a novel approach to STEAM learning that engages students from historically marginalized communities in culturally relevant and inclusive maker education.

A trailblazer in the world of dance\, Copeland is known for her iconic classical ballet roles including Odette/Odile in “Swan Lake”; Juliet in “Romeo and Juliet”; and Firebird\, to name a few. \nShe is the New York Times bestselling author of several books\, including The Wind at My Back\, Life in Motion\, Ballerina Body and Black Ballerinas\, and the picture books Bunheads and Firebird. Her production company\, Life in Motion Productions\, focuses on representative stories of artists—past\, present and future—and normalizing the arts experience for everyone. \nCopeland is also an avid philanthropist. In 2022\, she launched The Misty Copeland Foundation with BE BOLD\, a program to bring greater diversity\, equity and inclusion to dance\, especially ballet. She is an ambassador to and alum of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America\, and an ambassador to MindLeaps\, a Rwanda-based arts program that helps young people get off the streets and into an academic setting. \nCopeland has been named one of the Time 100\, and received both a Glamour Women of the Year Award and a Black Girls Rock! Award. In 2021\, Copeland received the Spingarn Medal\, the NAACP’s highest honor\, and in 2023 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from New York University. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is part of the Wisdom of Women (WoW) event series presented by Women & Philanthropy at UC Davis\, which unites women as leaders dedicated to using our collective talents and resources for the good of all.
