SUMMARY:Author Talk: Mason Deaver
DESCRIPTION:We are SO excited to announce that Mason Deaver is coming to The Avid Reader on January 5th at 5:30PM to celebrate the release of their new book: Okay\, Cupid. \nAbout the Author\nMason Deaver is a bestselling and award-winning young-adult novelist. Their first book\, I Wish You All the Best\, was an instant bestseller and award-winner\, with a movie adaptation on the way. Their second book\, The Ghosts We Keep\, received a starred review from Booklist and was selected for ALA’s Reading Rainbow List. They are a contributor to several anthologies\, as well as the author of the horror novella\, Another Name For the Devil. They currently live in San Francisco with their cats Sophie and Irene . \nAbout the Book\nAs a cupid\, Jude thinks they understand love a little bit more than the average human. It makes sense — Jude’s been studying love their whole teen life. And\, yes\, there have been some bumps in the road\, and they’re currently on probation for doing something that they absolutely\, definitely shouldn’t have done… but they’re ready to prove they can make matches without ever getting involved. \nOnly… Jude’s next assignment isn’t about setting up two adults. No\, this time Jude has to go to high school\, with kids their own age. And the assignment is a tough one: two best friends who are meant to be more than just best friends… but who aren’t currently speaking to each other after a huge falling out. \nJude thinks they’ve got this one all under control\, and that they won’t get involved whatsoever. \nWhich proves that maybe Jude hasn’t learned the first lesson of humans and love … It’s complicated. \n

SUMMARY:Stories on Stage Davis: Donna Apidone & Daniel Tam-Claiborne
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, January 13\, Stories on Stage Davis will present memoir and novel excerpts at the Pence Gallery in downtown Davis. Doors open at 7 p.m.\, and the event starts at 7:30. The event is free to attend and donations are welcome at the door.  \nThe event will follow the series’ usual format of two stories by local authors read aloud by local actors. Copies of the authors’ books\, purchased in partnership with Avid Reader\, will be available for purchase and signing. \nFirst\, excerpts from Drive-Time Meditations: Find Purpose on Your Commute by Donna Apidone will be read jointly by actors Janis Stevens and Jim Lane. Written in a series of poetic\, page-long prompts\, Drive-Time Meditations encourages the daily commuter to reflect while on the road. While the original intention is to read one prompt and drive\, Stories on Stage Davis will present a string of prompts with an introduction by Apidone.  \nSecond\, the short story “Grip Strength” by Daniel Tam-Claiborne will be read by Braeden Harris\, who is currently in CapStage’s production of Christmas at Pemberley. In this story\, recent high school graduate Christian spends aimless hours at Liberty Lanes\, the local bowling alley. Encounters with his best friend\, who visits from college with new ambitions and girlfriend in tow\, knock Christian into questions about his aim not on the lanes\, but in life.  \nStories on Stage Davis is a fiscally sponsored project of YoloArts\, a non-profit arts organization\, and is supported by the 2022 City of Davis Arts Grant (funded by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation\, a California Non-Profit Corporation). For more information\, including previous podcast episodes and live events\, go to the Stories on Stage Davis website: storiesonstagedavis.com. \n

SUMMARY:Ashley Benham-Yazdani at The Avid Reader
DESCRIPTION:Find wonder in the sky with Ashley Benham-Yazdani’s newest children’s book: Cosmic Wonder! Join us on January 27th at 11:00AM to celebrate this children’s book by a local author. \nAbout the AuthorAshley Benham-Yazdani is a picture book author/illustrator and nature lover. She is passionate about arts education and has taught illustration courses at the Maryland Institute College of Art\, and at Towson University. Her debut book\, A Green Place to Be\, is currently available from Candlewick Press and can be found at your local bookstore. Her tools of the trade are watercolors\, colored pencils\, and Photoshop\, but she also enjoys embroidery\, block printing\, and screen printing. When not pushing pigment or pixels around\, Ashley can be found reading\, knitting\, or running around in the great outdoors. She lives in Davis\, CA with her husband and their two children.\nAbout Cosmic Wonder\nFirst recorded traveling overhead in 240 BCE\, Halley’s Comet returns every seventy-six years or so for a fresh glimpse of life on bountiful Earth. In a wondrous story told from the comet’s point of view\, the creator of A Green Place to Be weaves scenes of Halley’s hurtling through space with views of Earth and its evolving flora and fauna below. Even as humans gaze up in search of the celestial wanderer—tracking the “broom star” in words and pictures—the comet gazes down\, forming gentle conclusions. Each visit reveals how curious and creative humans transform the planet\, contributing war and pollution but also a boundless capacity to love. What will the comet find when it passes again in 2061? Time stamps and thorough back matter ground a lyrical and luminously illustrated story in sound historical and scientific research. A kaleidoscope of biodiversity\, locales\, and peoples\, Cosmic Wonder gracefully charts the highs and lows of human civilization through the eyes of a sympathetic watcher.
