DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jorgenson will discuss how racism and sexism in history prevent us from seeing the world clearly. “We cannot contend that we are free of all racial and gender prejudices\, unless we are sure that we are aware of the racial and gender biases that we have been taught\,” says Dr. Jorgensen. \nDr. Jorgensen is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at UC Davis\, originally of Washington D.C. and now a longtime resident of Davis. He is the author of “Frederick Douglass and the Early Social Psychology of Racial Oppression” and “The Afro-American Critique of White Supremacist Science: A Chronology of a Tradition.” Dr. Jorgensen has lectured on  “Unexpected Aspects of Black Musical Traditions about Black musical traditions’\, in addition to teaching Sociology of Afro-America\, Afro American Thought\, and Race Relations. DESCRIPTION:In Hate in the Homeland: The New Global Far Right\, Cynthia Miller-Idriss shifts the conversation about radicalization from the how and why to the when and where\, to the life stages and places where extremist beliefs are cultivated and spread. Miller-Idriss reveals the inherently social fabric of radicalization\, where everyday spaces of community and belonging—from college campuses and mixed martial arts gyms to clothing stores\, online gaming chat rooms and YouTube cooking channels—can inoculate extremism\, hate and violence in the mainstream. Away from an exclusive focus on fringe or far-wing groups\, the author draws us in to examine the fluid encounters and engagements that young people experience along spiraling pathways of radicalization. In suggesting interventions and antidotes\, Miller-Idriss puts forward a “public-health approach to hate” that reduces vulnerabilities\, educates on inequity and injustice in the United States and internationally and addresses feelings of alienation and isolation to ultimately locate and reorient towards shared values of belonging and home.

The goal is for each person to develop five minutes of material\, culminating in a performance for family\, friends\, and the public. With appearances on television\, in movies\, and on stage\, he knows what makes something funny and entertaining. DESCRIPTION:In a cultural landscape filled with endless pundits and talking heads\, Fran Lebowitz stands out as one of our most insightful social commentators.\nNo less an authority than David Sedaris calls Fran Lebowitz “the gold standard for intelligence\, efficiency and humor. Now and forever.” Her essays and interviews offer her acerbic views on current events and the media as well as pet peeves including tourists\, baggage-claim areas\, after-shave lotion\, adults who roller skate\, children who speak French or anyone who is unduly tan. Lebowitz returns after a raucous 2022 appearance that brought a little bit of New York City to Yolo County. The audience yelled out questions\, which Lebowitz riffed on\, dismissed\, deflected and occasionally answered with quick wit and panache.

SUMMARY:Stories on Stage Davis: Scott Alumbaugh & Katherine Nolan
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, February 10\, Stories on Stage Davis will present  at the Pence Gallery in downtown Davis. Doors open at 7 p.m.\, and the event starts at 7:30. The event is free to attend and donations are welcome at the door.  \nThe event will follow the series’ usual format of two stories by local authors read aloud by local actors. Copies of the authors’ books will be available for purchase and signing. \nFirst\, an excerpt from On the Pony Express Trail: One Man’s Journey to Discover History from a Different Kind of Saddle by Scott Alumbaugh will be read by a local actor (TBD). Follow Alumbaugh as he encounters twists and turns\, mud and cow wallows\, elation and frustration while bikepacking the Pony Express Trail. Told with a mix of humor\, detailed description\, and historical research\, this excerpt will take you for a scenic\, enjoyable\, and informative ride.  \nScott Alumbaugh is the author of On the Pony Express Trail: One Man’s Journey to Discover History from a Different Kind of Saddle. His works also include: a novella\, Will Kill for Food; short fiction published in StoryQuarterly\, Kestrel\, Hunger Mountain Review\, Black Fork Review\, and Meat for Tea; and non-fiction published Overland Quarterly\, little somethings press\, and elsewhere. Alumbaugh is an avid cyclist who has ridden numerous ultra-distance events. He was so taken with the Pony Express that at age 62 he bikepacked 1\,400 miles of the trail from St. Joseph\, Missouri to Salt Lake City\, Utah. His journey took five weeks on a route that was mostly off-road. Scott formerly practiced business litigation in Los Angeles and San Francisco\, California.  \nSecond\, a chapter from Aphrodite in Jeans by Katherine Nolan will be read by a local actor (TBD). “The Napalm Incident” takes something very private—pubic hair removal—and turns it into a relatable\, hilarious\, and cringe-worthy tale of self-care for all to hear. This bold narrative suggests the importance of female empowerment\, of feeling good in your own body and in your relationships. \nKatherine Nolan wrote Aphrodite in Jeans in 2005\, after an abundance of notes\, blog posts\, observations\, and just darn good (i.e.\, bad) dating stories demanded to live in one place. Katherine writes and produces for the stage and is currently working on a musical and several other plays\, along with an upcoming production of Hail Poetry: The Magic and Madness of Gilbert & Sullivan which was first performed at Soka University in 2016.  She also gets obsessive about bicycles and annually tackles the 545-mile AIDS bike ride from SF to LA. Thankfully she quit her day job in tech management so she finally has time to over-commit fully. Katherine has a degree in Creative Writing from UCSC and an MFA in Film and Television Screenwriting from UCLA. DESCRIPTION:The Poetry Night Reading Series is excited to feature poets Cami Rothmuller and Iris Jamahl Dunkle at 7 PM on Thursday\, February 15th\, 2024\, on the first floor of the John Natsoulas Gallery\, 521 1st Street in Davis. \nCami Rothmuller is an undergraduate at UC Davis\, pursuing a degree in English with an emphasis in creative writing\, and a favorite contributor to Poetry Night. She writes about myriad aspects of life\, from intimacy and trauma to nature and insects\, but has a particular fascination with the intersection of nature\, madness\, and secular worship. She recently received the Pamela Maus Award for Poetry and the Lois Ann Lattin Rosenberg English Department Essay Prize. Her newest manuscript is titled A Crucible of Sunlight. \nIris Jamahl Dunkle is an award-winning poet and biographer whose work challenges the American West’s male-oriented recorded history by researching the lives of women. Her fourth collection of poems\, West : Fire : Archive\, was published by The Center for Literary Publishing in 2021. Dunkle wrote the first full-length biography on Charmian London\, Jack London’s wife\, Charmian Kittredge London: Trailblazer\, Author\, Adventurer published by the University of Oklahoma Press in 2020 (now available in audiobook). Her next biography\, Riding Like the Wind: The Life of Sanora Babb\, is forthcoming from University of California Press in Fall 2024. Dunkle teaches at Napa Valley College\, UC Davis\, and Dominican University\, and is the Poetry and Translation Director of the Napa Valley Writers’ Conference.  \nThis event will take place on the first floor of the John Natsoulas Gallery (521 1st Street in Davis) at 7 PM on Thursday\, February 15th\, 2024. An open mic will follow the featured performers. Open mic performances will be limited to four minutes or two items\, whichever is shorter. He has been recognized with a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship. In 2022\, she received first place in the California Journalism Awards for her coverage of the 2022 election\, specifically for her coverage of “Red California” and conservative movements in a blue state. She is a graduate of the UC Davis Creative Writing MFA program\, where she wrote a collection of essays called Meditations on Recovery. She would almost always rather be reading poetry. \n

She grew up and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area in California. Dr. Pakpour loves bugs of all varieties\, whether they are six-legged or microscopic. She received her Bachelors of Science in Entomology from the University of California Davis and her PhD in Microbiology\, Virology\, and Parasitology from University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Pakpour loves teaching and worked for a number of years as a professor before moving to the biotech sector. She currently works as a scientist at Novozymes where she researches how to use microbes to build a more sustainable future. \nAbout the Book\nMosquitos\, wasps\, flies and fleas… Buzzing\, biting\, and causing irritating lumps on your skin.
