He is gearing up for an exciting talk on dragonflies and damselflies. With his expertise\, he’ll dive into the world of Odonata\, the insect order encompassing these ancient creatures\, tracing their 300-million-year evolutionary journey. \nFocusing on local species in Davis\, Christofer will showcase the diverse insect life thriving locally including our own demonstration wetlands. From their complex life cycle to their mating behaviors\, attendees will get a closer look at these fascinating insects and their ecological roles. \nChristofer will share insights from his own research on dragonfly legs\, shedding light on their functional morphology and prey capture behavior of both larval and adult dragonflies. SUMMARY:Poetry Night Reading Series: Maceo Montoya and León Salvatierra
DESCRIPTION:The Poetry Night Reading Series is excited to feature poets Maceo Montoya and León Salvatierra at 7 PM on Thursday\, March 7th\, 2024\, on the first floor of the John Natsoulas Gallery\, 521 1st Street in Davis. \nMaceo Montoya‘s first novel\, The Scoundrel and the Optimist (Bilingual Review\, 2010)\, was awarded the 2011 International Latino Book Award for Best First Book\, and Latino Stories named him one of its “Top Ten New Latino Writers to Watch.” In 2014\, University of New Mexico Press published his second novel\, The Deportation of Wopper Barraza\, and Copilot Press published Letters to the Poet from His Brother\, a hybrid book combining images\, prose poems\, and essays. You Must Fight Them: A Novella and Stories (University of New Mexico Press\, 2015) was a finalist for Foreword Review‘s INDIEFAB Book of the Year Award. Montoya also wrote and illustrated Chicano Movement for Beginners\, a work of graphic nonfiction. His most recent novel is Preparatory Notes for Future Masterpieces\, published by the University of Nevada Press in 2021. \nMontoya is currently an associate professor in the Chicana/o Studies Department at UC Davis where he teaches courses on Chicano culture and literature. More information\, including examples of his artwork\, can be viewed at www.maceomontoya.com. \nLeón Salvatierra is a poet from Nicaragua who migrated to the U.S. at the age of 15. He has an MFA in Creative Writing from UC Davis (June 2020) and a Ph.D. in Latin American Literatures with an emphasis on U.S. Latinx literature from UC Berkeley (2014). He has published a book of poetry\, Al Notre\, with the University of Nicaragua UNAN-León (2012). The collection of poems\, written in Spanish\, explores the transnational experience of Central American migrants in their journey to the U.S. \nSalvatierra’s poems have appeared in Poetry Magazine\, The Notre Dame Review\, The Best American Poetry\, Jung Journal Culture & Psyche\, and The Wandering Song\, Central American Writing in the United States. His newest manuscript\, In the Land of Giants\, is a collection of poems and creative nonfiction\, written in English\, that reflect critically on life in the United States from a diverse cast of voices from the Central American diaspora that emerged from the civil wars in the 1980s. A poem from this manuscript\, “Teaching the Immigrant to Speak English” (his Spanish translation)\, won the 2020 Juana Goergen Poetry Prize for Best Poem in Spanish\, written in the U.S. Currently\, León is a lecturer in the Chicana/o Program at UC Davis\, where he teaches Latinx literatures and cultures. He lives in Berkeley.  \nThis event will take place on the first floor of the John Natsoulas Gallery (521 1st Street in Davis) at 7 PM on Thursday\, March 7th\, 2024. An open mic will follow the featured performers. Open mic performances will be limited to four minutes or two items\, whichever is shorter. SUMMARY:Dancing the Afrofuture Book Event
DESCRIPTION:Book Tour Reading by recognized scholar in the burgeoning field of global Hip-Hop Studies UC\nDavis Professor Emerita Dr. Halifu Osumare. Her new memoir Dancing the Afrofuture: Hula Hip-Hop and the Dunham Legacy chronicles her transition from dancer-activist in the San Francisco Bay Area to academic capturing the zeitgeist of hip-hop culture. In the memoir Osumare is living in Hawaiʻi earning a doctorate and following her mentor Katherine Dunham’s model by studying and performing hula when she begins researching the effects of hip-hop culture on Hawaiʻian youth. She soon develops her “connective marginality” theory to explain the internationalization of hip-hop youth culture. Dancing the Afrofuture illuminates the ways that the Black past reveals itself in the Afro-Present even as it trends into the Afrofuture. \n

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 9\, Stories on Stage Davis will present  at the Pence Gallery in downtown Davis. Doors open at 7 p.m.\, and the event starts at 7:30. The event is free to attend and donations are welcome at the door.  \nThe event will follow the series’ usual format of two stories by local authors read aloud by local actors. Copies of the authors’ books\, purchased in partnership with Avid Reader\, will be available for purchase and signing. \nFirst\, an excerpt from Like A Complete Unknown by Anara Guard will be read by Kellie Raines. Fifteen-year-old Katya feels trapped. She glimpses a future life of cleaning offices and her parents already discuss marriage. Will she set aside her dreams of art school for a more practical purpose that her family expects? Or will she venture out into the world\, risking things she can’t yet imagine?   \nAnara Guard is a fiction writer and poet who has lived in the Midwest\, New England\, and Sacramento.  She graduated from Kenyon College with a degree in English\, and has attended Breadloaf Writers Conference and the Community of Writers. Her debut novel\, Like a Complete Unknown\, won Honorable Mention by the Chicago Writers Association for their 2022 Book of the Year in indie fiction.  Her writing has been published in The Ear\, Gold Man Review\, Voices 2020\, Under the Gum Tree\, the anthology Twenty Twenty: 43 Stories From a Year Like No Other and New York Times’ Tiny Love Stories. She and her sister perform their poetry as “Sibling Revelry.” \nKellie Raines will read the excerpts from Anara Guard’s book\, Like A Complete Unknown. Kellie is a local actor\, director\, writer\, and visual artist. She has performed with and directed for local theatre companies\, including KOLT Run Creations\, Green Valley Theatre\, Big Idea Theatre\, Theater Galatea\, and Resurrection Theatre. She has shown her visual art at Archival Gallery and in the PBS KVIE Art Auction and The Crocker Art Museum’s Big Names\, Small Art Auction. Set in the Gila River Japanese internment camp\, these strange and beautifully crafted stories follow two internees\, Kane and Margaret\, who appear in each selection as different people. Stories on Stage Davis will present “whiskey over barbed wire\,” about a man who grows wings\, and “dissolving newspaper\, fermenting leaves\,” about a girl and her hungry\, magical cricket.  \nKiik Araki-Kawaguchi is the author of The Book of Kane and Margaret (FC2 / UAP). While a graduate student in Davis\, he worked as a popcorn popper at Regal Cinemas\, a traveling tutor\, an after-school teacher\, a social media assistant for the Art of Regional Change\, a grader for Asian American Studies\, a TA for Religious Studies\, and an English 5P instructor. He is currently an Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing at Western Washington University in Bellingham. \nSara Matsui-Colby will read the excerpts from Kiik Araki-Kawaguchi’s book\, The Book of Kane and Margaret. Sara is a bilingual\, mixed Japanese American actor\, voice-over artist\, and audiobook narrator. She is a member of AEA and SAG-AFTRA. Sara is delighted to share her love of storytelling and to be a part of Stories on Stage. She has performed in theatres all over the Greater Bay Area\, most recently in Davis as part of the play development workshop\, The Mochi Project\, and has also appeared in several local films. Her voice-over credits include dubbing for shows on Disney+ and Netflix. Sara has worked with many authors and publishers including Graphic Audio and Penguin Random House. Her two most recent audiobooks include The Witches of Brooklyn Book 1 and Momo Arashima Breaks the Mirror of the Sun. Ward will be joined in conversation by Betsy Miller \nAbout the Author\nClara Ward lives in Silicon Valley on the border between reality and speculative fiction. SUMMARY:Poetry Night Reading Series: Kim Stanley Robinson and Laurie Glover
DESCRIPTION:The Poetry Night Reading Series is excited to feature the multi-genre authors Kim Stanley Robinson and Laurie Glover at 7 PM on Thursday\, March 21st\, 2024\, on the first floor of the John Natsoulas Gallery\, 521 1st Street in Davis. \nKim Stanley Robinson is an American science fiction writer. He is the author of about twenty books\, including the internationally bestselling Mars trilogy\, and more recently Red Moon\, New York 2140\, and The Ministry for the Future. He was part of the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Artists and Writers’ Program in 1995 and 2016\, and a featured speaker at COP-26 in Glasgow\, as a guest of the UK government and the UN. His work has been translated into 28 languages\, and won awards including the Hugo\, Nebula\, and World Fantasy awards. In 2016 asteroid 72432 was named “Kimrobinson.” At this event\, Kim Stanley Robinson will be reading poetry. \nLaurie Glover’s poems have appeared in journals such as Terrain\, Woman’s Studies\, and California Quarterly\, and her essays have appeared in journals such as Zyzzyva and Boom. A 2022 shipboard artist’s residency in the Norwegian Arctic threw her back into the elision and imbrication of poetry\, resulting in collaborations with visual artists in as far-flung places as Taiwan and Berlin. Most recently\, she spent fall of 2023 teaching writing and literature courses for Semester at Sea. \nThis event will take place on the first floor of the John Natsoulas Gallery (521 1st Street in Davis) at 7 PM on Thursday\, March 21st\, 2024. An open mic will follow the featured performers. Open mic performances will be limited to four minutes or two items\, whichever is shorter. As Robert Southey says\, “Be brief; for it is with words as with sunbeams – the more they are condensed\, the deeper they burn.” The open mic list typically fills by 6:50 PM\, so please arrive early if you would like to perform something during the 8 o’clock hour. DESCRIPTION:YoloSol\, a cultural arts and ecology collective\, and St Martin’s Seeds of Justice program will lead discussion of the book Know We Are Here: Voices of Native California Resistance\, edited by Terria Smith\, a tribal member of the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians. \nWe will meet once a month on Tuesdays from 6:30-8pm at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church to reflect on how these stories shape our understanding of the Native Californian past\, shed light on our current climate crisis\, and might suggest pathways to a restorative future for the web of life here in the Yolo bioregion.
