SUMMARY:Author Talk: Alice Rothchild
DESCRIPTION:Alice Rothchild will speak about her remarkable autobiography\, Inspired and Outraged: The Making of a Feminist Physician. \nAbout the Author \nAlice Rothchild is a physician\, author\, and filmmaker who loves storytelling that pushes boundaries and engages us in unexpected conversations. She practiced ob-gyn for almost 40 years and served as Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology\, Harvard Medical School. She received Boston Magazine’s Best of Boston’s Women Doctors Award\, was named in Feminists Who Changed America 1963-1975\, had her portrait painted for Robert Shetterly’s Americans Who Tell the Truth project\, and was named a Peace Pioneer by the American Jewish Peace Archive. \nAbout the Book \nA remarkable autobiography\, written entirely in free verse\, of Alice Rothchild’s journey from 1950’s good girl to irreverent\, feisty\, feminist obstetrician-gynecologist forging her own direction in the contradictory\, sexist world of medicine. As a child who came of age in the turbulent 1960s\, she was compelled to create a path in the often outrageous\, male-dominated medical field\, repeatedly finding herself to be a first: accepted into an ob-gyn residency\, opening an all-woman practice\, working with midwives\, challenging the status quo\, shaped by her early involvement with Our Bodies Ourselves. Rothchild’s poems are steeped in the often-shocking history of medicine and the conflicted sexual politics of the second half of the twentieth century.

SUMMARY:Yolo County’s Latino Working Class
DESCRIPTION:From the kitchens of downtown Davis to the agricultural fields all around us\, Yolo County wouldn’t function without the hard work of thousands of Latino workers\, a significant portion of whom are undocumented. While this community is under intense threat from the current administration’s policies\, this segment of Yolo County’s population has also long reckoned with poverty\, lack of political representation\, food and housing insecurity\, and lack of workplace protections. \nPlease join Antonio De Loera-Brust for a candid discussion on this population\, its role in Yolo County society\, and its contributions and needs – which are too often overlooked even in the very liberal community of Davis. Antonio De Loera is the communications director for the United Farm Workers\, and brings over a decade of experience working with Yolo County’s Latino working class. Antonio previously worked as the director of the Yolo Interfaith Immigration Network’s after-school program at the Madison Migrant Center from 2013 to 2017\, he served as the Latino Outreach Specialist in 2020 and 2021 for Yolo County’s COVID-19 response\, helping plan and implement the County’s farm worker vaccination campaign\, and in 2024 ran for Yolo County Supervisor in the 4th District. He also has worked as a staffer in the U.S. House of Representatives and served in the Biden-Harris administration as a political appointee at the U.S. Department of State. \nFor those who may want to do some reading ahead of time I would recommend the following articles: \n\nhttps://calmatters.org/california-divide/2024/08/california-farmworkers-heat-illness/\n\n\nhttps://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/04/california-tomatoes-farm-workers-hunger-food-yolo-county/\n\n\nhttps://magazine.lmu.edu/articles/disconnected/

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Manvir Singh
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of Manvir Singh’s debut release\, Shamanism: The Timeless Religion. \nAbout the Author \nManvir Singh is an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of California\, Davis. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Brown University and a PhD in human evolutionary biology from Harvard University. He is a regular contributor to The New Yorker\, and his writings have also appeared in Wired\, Vice\, Aeon\, and The Guardian\, as well as in leading academic journals\, including Science\, Nature Human Behaviour\, and Behavioral and Brain Sciences. He has studied the use of psychedelics in the rain forests of Colombia and\, since 2014\, has conducted ethnographic fieldwork with Mentawai communities on Siberut Island\, Indonesia\, focusing on shamanism and justice. He lives with his wife\, Nina\, and daughter\, Zora\, in Davis\, California. \nAbout the Book \nFrom a brilliant\, young\, Harvard-trained anthropologist and contributor to The New Yorker comes a fascinating investigation into the spiritual practice of shamanism\, from its beginnings to the present moment\, for readers disaffected with organized religion who seek a more personal approach to spirituality. \nWhat are the origins of shamanism\, and what is its future? Do shamans believe in their powers? What exactly is trance? What can we learn from indigenous healing practices? \nTraveling from Indonesia to the Colombian Amazon\, living with shamans and observing music\, drug use\, and indigenous curing ceremonies\, anthropologist Manvir Singh journeys into one of the most mysterious religious traditions. Fundamentally\, shamans are specialists who use altered states to engage with unseen realms and provide services like healing and divination. As Singh shows\, shamanism’s appeal stems from its psychological resonance. Its essence is spiritual transformation: a specialist uses initiations\, deprivation\, and non-ordinary states to seemingly become a different kind of human\, one possessed of powers to cure\, prophesy\, and otherwise tame life’s uncertainties. \nFollowing a fascinating cast of characters\, Singh reveals the complexities and vicissitudes of a timeless\, always relevant\, and ubiquitous phenomenon. He argues that biomedicine can learn from shamanic practices and that psychedelic enthusiasts completely misrepresent history. He also shows that shamanic traditions will forever re-emerge – and that by contemplating humanity’s oldest spiritual practice\, we come to better understand ourselves\, our history\, and our future.
