SUMMARY:Author Talk: Catriona McPherson
DESCRIPTION:About the Author \nBorn and raised in Edinburgh\, Catriona McPherson left Edinburgh University with a PhD in Linguistics and worked in academia\, as well as banking and public libraries\, before taking up full-time writing in 2001. For the last ten years she has lived in Northern California with a black cat and a scientist. In 2020 she has been shortlisted for a third Mary Higgins Clark Award\, for Strangers at the Gate\, and won a Left Coast Crime 2020 Lefty Award for the Best Humorous Mystery for Scot and Soda. \nAbout the Book \nIt’s egg-hunt season\, but Lexy Campbell is spending Easter hunting a killer! \nNot even Cuento’s Easter bonnet parade can distract Lexy Campbell from conception woes and missing tourists Bill and Billie Miller. The Millers’ vintage Mustang has been abandoned\, its interior covered in blood. \nIs this a double murder\, and if so\, where are the bodies? Why were the Millers spending the night in their car? Did they pitch up at the Last Ditch Motel only to be turned away? Are they really dead? The Trinity for Trouble are quickly on the case! \nAs they start to identify the guests staying at the motel the weekend before Easter – including a Goth and a barbershop singer on stilts – disturbing evidence comes to light. Can Lexy see though all the deception to unmask the truth and save the Last Ditch? \nFans of Janet Evanovich and Sarah Strohmeyer will fall head over heels for this addictive mystery that’s full of twists and laugh out loud humour.

SUMMARY:Learn to Meditate
DESCRIPTION:Join us for four Saturday mornings in September to learn a simple yet profound meditation practice that is grounded in the ancient Tibetan teachings of Shambhala.  Centered on the notion of basic goodness\, these teachings and practices are meant for times of joy and also times that are unsettling and difficult.  They describe how people can actually make use of tenderness\, sadness\, and fear to access an open awareness that is clear seeing\, steady and kind.  Each Saturday morning session (9-Noon) will include talks\, guided meditation instruction\, small discussion groups and a tea break.   All levels of practice welcome.   If you have an established meditation practice you will appreciate the retreat like environment and opportunity to meditate in community with what Suzuki Roshi called “beginner’s mind”.  The leader for the weekend is Lyle Larson who has been practicing and studying Buddhism and Shambhala paths since 1981. He is especially interested in  how these profound ancient teachings apply to everyday life in our highly polarized aggressive world. His latest path emphasis has been on applying the teachings and practices of simply being present and deep empathetic listening.
