SUMMARY:Learn to Meditate
DESCRIPTION:Join us for four Saturday mornings in September to learn a simple yet profound meditation practice that is grounded in the ancient Tibetan teachings of Shambhala.  Centered on the notion of basic goodness\, these teachings and practices are meant for times of joy and also times that are unsettling and difficult.  They describe how people can actually make use of tenderness\, sadness\, and fear to access an open awareness that is clear seeing\, steady and kind.  Each Saturday morning session (9-Noon) will include talks\, guided meditation instruction\, small discussion groups and a tea break.   All levels of practice welcome.   If you have an established meditation practice you will appreciate the retreat like environment and opportunity to meditate in community with what Suzuki Roshi called “beginner’s mind”.  The leader for the weekend is Lyle Larson who has been practicing and studying Buddhism and Shambhala paths since 1981. He is especially interested in  how these profound ancient teachings apply to everyday life in our highly polarized aggressive world. His latest path emphasis has been on applying the teachings and practices of simply being present and deep empathetic listening.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Sasha Abramsky
DESCRIPTION:About the Book \nA gripping narrative of federal workers caught in Trump’s second-term purge\, and the devastating consequences for American democracy. \nAmerican Carnage follows eleven federal workers\, in eight government agencies\, from the time they were told they were fired in the early weeks of Donald Trump’s second presidential administration through to the summer of 2025. With Trump having empowered the world’s richest man\, Elon Musk\, and his Department of Government Efficiency\, to make dramatic cuts to many of the country’s most important agencies\, what unfolded in these months was a cascading tragedy of historic proportions. \nTheir stories\, which show a country in a profound moment of crisis and dislocation\, are America’s stories. What happened to them—the bullying\, the intimidation\, the deliberate removal of financial stability—also happened to hundreds of thousands of other employees. A fierce reckoning with the intimate and far-reaching effects of these layoffs\, both on the individuals who lost their jobs and on the millions of Americans who found their access to basic government services curtailed\, American Carnage is the first book-length account of how these cuts dulled and denuded our city on the hill\, leaving a morally impoverished landscape in their wake. \nAbout the Author \nSasha Abramsky is The Nation’s Western correspondent and the author of a weekly political column for the magazine. His work has also appeared in The Atlantic\, The New Yorker Online\, The New Republic\, The Village Voice\, The Guardian\, Rolling Stone\, and many other publications. He is the author of eleven books\, including The American Way of Poverty: How the Other Half Still Lives\, The House of Twenty Thousand Books\, Little Wonder: The Fabulous Story of Lottie Dod\, the World’s First Female Sports Superstar\, and Chaos Comes Calling: The Battle Against the Far-Right Takeover of Small-Town America. Abramsky teaches writing at UC Davis. Follow him on Bluesky at @sashaabramsky.bsky.social.

SUMMARY:Books & Dogs Children’s Book Event
DESCRIPTION:Our doggy friends from Canine Companions will join us in the store to celebrate Andy’s Tale – a picture book about a puppy discovering his purpose as a service dog. \nAbout the Book \nAdapted from the award-winning short film of the same name\, this heartwarming children’s picture book follows the journey of a determined puppy who overcomes adversity to discover his purpose as a service dog. \n“Andy’s journey reflects the heart of what service dogs do—providing independence\, companionship\, and love.” —Jean Schulz\, president of Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates \nMeet Andy––the smallest of his litter––who first captured hearts and minds in the original short film\, brought to life by Ignite Animation Studios through the support of Jean Schulz\, the Executive Producer and a Canine Companions board member. \nNow Andy’s inspiring story leaps off the screen and onto the page in this uplifting retelling by John Kelly\, a contributor to the original film script. Follow along as Andy faces challenges on his path\, mirroring the real-life dedication\, training\, and bond that go into preparing service dogs to help people with disabilities. \nHere’s what makes Andy: A Dog’s Tale unforgettable: \n• Teaches Empathy & Awareness: Introduces kids to the important work of service dogs and how they help people with disabilities. \n• Celebrates Perseverance: A gentle story about overcoming challenges and discovering where you belong. \n• Visually Engaging: Features full-color art directly inspired by the award-winning short film. \n• Bonus Keepsake: Comes with a dust jacket that unfolds into a ‘Be A Hero’ poster\, perfect for bedroom walls or classrooms. \nWith its universal themes of resilience\, compassion\, and the power of purpose\, Andy’s story will resonate with young readers\, families\, dog-lovers\, and people of all abilities. This touching tale reminds us that unlikely heroes often come from small beginnings—and that what matters most is the size of your heart.
