SUMMARY:Author Talk: Angela Montoya
DESCRIPTION:Author Angela Montoya will discuss her latest novel\, Carnival Fantástico\, with Sandra Proudman. Join us for a fantastic evening of conversation! \nAbout Carnival Fantástico \nAn unputdownable fantasy following a young woman posing as fortune-teller at a magical traveling carnival\, where the handsome boy who once broke her heart resurfaces and warns her that the carnival is more sinister than it appears. \nWelcome to the Carnival Fantástico\, a spectacle of magic and mischief\, and the perfect haven for a runaway. Using her tricks and razor-sharp wit\, Esmeralda becomes the carnival’s resident fortune-teller\, aiming for the lead role in the Big Top Show. Success would mean freedom from her former employer\, the commander of the King’s army. . \nIgnacio has defected from the army and is on the hunt for evidence of his father’s corruption. But the last thing he expects to find on his father’s trail of lies is the only girl he’s ever loved\, spinning false fortunes at a traveling carnival. \nPerhaps fortune has thrown them together for a reason. They strike a deal: she’ll help him expose his father if he helps her secure the main act. But old feelings don’t die easily\, and the commander’s secret isn’t the only thing they’ll need to confront. \nAbout Angela \nAngela Montoya has been obsessed with the magic of storytelling since she was a little girl. She hasn’t seen a day without a book in her hand\, a show tune in her mind\, or a movie quote on her lips. She is the author of Sinner’s Isle and A Cruel Thirst. When she isn’t lost in the world of words\, Angela can be found hiding away on her small farm in Northern California\, where she’s busy bossing around her partner and their two children\, as well as a host of animals. \nAbout Salvación \nIn this Latinx YA fantasy inspired by El Zorro\, Lola de La Peña becomes the masked heroine Salvación in order to save her family and town from a man who would destroy it for the magic it contains…if she doesn’t fall in love with a boy in his company first. \nLola de La Peña yearns to be free from the societal expectations of a young Mexican lady of her station. She spends her days pretending to be delicate and proper while watching her mamá cure the sick and injured with sal negra (black salt)\, a recently discovered magic that heals even the most mortal of sicknesses and wounds. But by night\, she is Salvación\, the free-spirit lady vigilante protecting the town of Coloma from those who threaten its peace and safety among the rising tension in Alta California after the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. \nBut one night\, a woman races into Coloma\, barely alive\, to tell the horrifying tale of how her town was obliterated by sal roja (red salt)\, a potent\, deadly magic capable of obliterating anything it comes into contact with\, and about the man who wields it: Damien Hernández. So when Hernández arrives the next day with a party of fifty strong and promises of returning Alta California to México\, Lola knows it’s only a matter of time before he brings the region under his rule—all Hernández needs is the next full moon and the stolen\, ancient amulet he carries to mine enough sal roja to conquer the land. Determined to protect everything she loves\, Lola races against time as Salvación to stop his plans. What she didn’t count on was the distracting and infuriating Alejandro\, who travels with Hernández but doesn’t seem to share his ambitions. With the stakes higher than ever and Hernández getting closer to his goals\, Lola will do anything to foil his plans\, even teaming up with Alejandro—who she doesn’t fully trust but can’t help but fall in love with. \nAbout Sandra \nSandra Proudman (she/her/ella) is the editor of the YA Latinx SFF anthology\, Relit: 16 Latinx Remixes of Classic Stories and a contributor to the YA horror anthology\, The House Where Death Lives\, both out now. Salvación is her first full-length novel. She is also a literary agent\, passionate about bringing underrepresented voices to the forefront. When not busily immersed in all things publishing\, you can find her spending time with her amazing husband and adorable toddler gathering rollie pollies and going on adventures\, catching up on all her shows\, or trying to get the perfect tortilla puff.

SUMMARY:Learn to Meditate
DESCRIPTION:Join us for four Saturday mornings in September to learn a simple yet profound meditation practice that is grounded in the ancient Tibetan teachings of Shambhala.  Centered on the notion of basic goodness\, these teachings and practices are meant for times of joy and also times that are unsettling and difficult.  They describe how people can actually make use of tenderness\, sadness\, and fear to access an open awareness that is clear seeing\, steady and kind.  Each Saturday morning session (9-Noon) will include talks\, guided meditation instruction\, small discussion groups and a tea break.   All levels of practice welcome.   If you have an established meditation practice you will appreciate the retreat like environment and opportunity to meditate in community with what Suzuki Roshi called “beginner’s mind”.  The leader for the weekend is Lyle Larson who has been practicing and studying Buddhism and Shambhala paths since 1981. He is especially interested in  how these profound ancient teachings apply to everyday life in our highly polarized aggressive world. His latest path emphasis has been on applying the teachings and practices of simply being present and deep empathetic listening.

SUMMARY:2025-26 Lunn Lecture: Anne Applebaum
DESCRIPTION:The annual Eugene Lunn Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Pulitzer prize-winning historian and journalist Anne Applebaum on Monday\, February 9\, 2026 from 4-6 pm at the Manetti Shrem Art Museum. The event (including reception) is free and open to the public. \nHer talk\, “Autocracy\, Inc. — or Democrats United?” is based on her most recent book\, the best selling Autocracy\, Inc. (2025): “All of us have in our minds a cartoon image of what an autocratic state looks like. There is a bad man at the top. He controls the army and the police. There are evil collaborators\, and maybe some brave dissidents. But in the 21st century\, that cartoon bears little resemblance to reality. Nowadays\, autocracies are run not by one bad guy\, but by sophisticated national and transnational networks composed of kleptocratic financial structures\, security services\, and professional propagandists. They don’t share an ideology\, but they do have a common goal: to defeat the ideas and language of liberal democracy\, inside their own countries and around the world. This lecture will examine this network and describe how it has shaped the world – and the United States.”

SUMMARY:Author Talk: S. E. Wendel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this release day event with S.E. Wendel\, in conversation with Analeigh Sbrana. Gargoyles and Fae\, oh my! \nAbout Heartsong \nFor fans of Ruby Dixon comes a steamy monster romance from S. E. Wendel\, following a museum worker who gets the shock of a lifetime when one of the (very attractive) gargoyle statues in an exhibit comes to life and claims her as his mate. \nFifteen hundred years ago\, Frey and all his kind were cursed by the vicious fae queen\, their magick stolen and their bodies rendered stone. It has been a hellish existence\, frozen in time as the world changes around them. A proud warrior\, Frey rages against his stone prison\, but with every year that passes\, hope slips away that the curse can ever be broken. That is\, until he and some of his kin are placed in an odd little museum. And she walks through the door. \nAnna Kincaid has struggled most of her life\, but she’s finally landed a job that will help her get ahead. It feels too good to be true—full healthcare and helping manage a museum full of exquisite artifacts? Her heart and history degree are thrilled\, but something about the museum is….strange. The owners are a mysterious couple who call the collection the clan. And the collection is…well\, monstrous. Huge\, savage-looking statues from the late-Celtic period. \nWhen the museum is stormed by masked commandos one night\, it isn’t even the weirdest thing to happen. No\, that has to be when one of the statues comes alive to save her. Or when he flies off with her. Or when he tucks her into his big body and growls mate. \nAbout S.E. Wendel \nS. E. Wendel is a California native who grew up with animals; her ginger tabby is her current writing partner and lets her know when it’s time to take a break (by laying on her keyboard). She graduated from the University of California\, Davis\, with a master’s in creative writing and uses her time to build worlds\, characters\, and their stories. She enjoys true crime\, pink nail polish\, and all the beautiful landscapes of California. \nAbout Lore of the Wilds \nIn a land ruled by ruthless Fae\, twenty-one-year-old Lore Alemeyu’s village is trapped in a forested prison. Lore knows that any escape attempt is futile—her scars are a testament to her past failures. But when her village is threatened\, Lore makes a desperate deal with a Fae lord. She will leave her home to catalog an enchanted library that hasn’t been touched in a thousand years. No Fae may enter the library\, but there is a chance a human might be able to breach the cursed doors. She convinces him that she will risk her life for wealth\, but really she’s after the one thing the Fae covet above all: magic of her own. As Lore navigates the hostile world outside\, she’s forced to rely on two Fae males to survive. Two very different\, very dangerous\, very attractive Fae males. When undeniable chemistry ignites\, she’s not just in danger of losing her life\, but her heart to the very creatures she can never trust. \nAbout Analeigh Sbrana \nAnaleigh Sbrana is the Sunday Times bestselling author of Lore of the Wilds. Known for weaving lyrical prose with thrilling plot twists and captivating main characters\, her novels explore complex themes of betrayal\, justice\, and the nuance of love. Through her storytelling\, Analeigh’s primary aim is to evoke a full range of emotion while empowering historically marginalized readers\, ensuring they feel seen and represented in rich\, unforgettable narratives. She currently lives in California with her family and pets.

Ordinarily the star of the Camden Roses is calm\, cool\, and collected\, keeping his club relevant with his prowess in the midfield and his mighty left foot. But this season\, the threats abound: There’s Camden’s management to contend with—complete with a prickly new Dutch coach\, eager for better results—and a midseason injury\, which sidelines him when his team needs him most. When a recruit is called up to fill in\, Oliver fears he’ll be replaced. If he can mentor this younger talent\, then they might just have a chance at winning\, together. \nAfter a string of lackluster performances in his native Spain\, Leonardo Davies-Villanueva is looking for one last shot with the club he always dreamed of\, where he once played in the youth academy. Oliver immediately finds confident\, eager Leo irritating. He can barely go through the motions\, let alone coach him\, without outright hostility. When he comes to admire Leo’s skill and warms to his humor and energy\, though\, he begins to see Leo as a friend—and then\, to his mounting horror\, as something more. \nLeo craves Oliver’s attention and partnership; Oliver can’t afford to fall in love with his teammate. He’s always kept a tight lid on his sexuality in a league that’s never had a player come out. As the season heats up\, a lot more than football hangs in the balance. Can Oliver—and Leo—win when it counts most? \nAbout the Author \nKallie Emblidge works for The Washington Post and is a co-chair of the paper’s union. She lives and writes in New York City. Two Left Feet is her first novel\, but she’s been a football fan forever.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Carolina Ixta
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with author and educator Carolina Ixta as we hear about her sophomore novel\, Few Blue Skies. \nAbout the Book \nIn her latest novel\, Pura Belpré Award–winning author Carolina Ixta weaves a tender story about love and hope\, following a teen as she works to protect her family and community from a major corporation taking over her town. \nPaloma Vistamontes is heartbroken. A year ago\, her ex-boyfriend\, Julio Ramos\, broke up with her after his father’s death\, a tragedy that drove Paloma and him apart. Ever since then\, the mountains have felt flatter\, the sky farther away. \nNow\, her hometown of San Fermín\, a place where honest people work on farms and in factories\, is in danger. Selva\, a massive e-commerce conglomerate\, threatens to open one of their warehouses beside her high school. \nThis isn’t the first time they’ve done this. Since Selva arrived\, they’ve opened warehouses everywhere where there used to be green spaces. Because of them\, the air pollution is so bad that school is often canceled. Many people\, including Paloma’s ever-practical Ma\, want to leave. \nBut Paloma wants nothing more than to stay. Because when the smog clears\, there is still hope. That hope drives Paloma to reconnect with Julio to expose and challenge the dangers that Selva introduces to communities like their own. Can they stop Selva from destroying everything they know? Is there still a chance for their budding romance? \nAbout the Author \nCarolina Ixta is a writer from Oakland\, California. A daughter of Mexican immigrants\, she received her BA in creative writing and Spanish language and literature at the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, and obtained her master’s degree in education at the University of California\, Berkeley. Her debut novel\, Shut Up\, This Is Serious\, was a Morris Award finalist\, an LA Times Book Prize finalist\, and the winner of the Pura Belpré Award. Few Blue Skies is her sophomore novel.

SUMMARY:Writing Flash: Narratives of Origin
DESCRIPTION:What does “home” mean when you’ve crossed borders—geographic\, emotional\, or temporal? \nIn this intimate\, generative writing workshop\, participants are invited to explore stories of origin\, belonging\, and in-between-ness through the lens of flash—short\, powerful pieces that challenge and also cross the traditional divisions between prose and poetry\, fiction and nonfiction. \nLed by writer Karolina Letunova\, whose creative work emerges from her own experience of leaving Western Siberia as a young adult\, this three-hour workshop is open to writers of all levels of experience. Together\, participants will read brief examples of published flash narratives\, learn what makes these small forms resonate\, and write their own creative work with the support of guided prompts. This community will experience writing as both a private act and as a shared practice—one that helps surface emotional truths\, make them speakable\, and build a sense of belonging. \nWhether you are a foreign-born immigrant carrying an “invisible homeland\,” someone with a complicated relationship to your roots\, or simply curious about writing as a way to connect to yourselves and others\, this workshop offers a welcoming space to reflect\, create\, and be in community with local writers. \nWriters of all skill levels are welcome. No prior writing experience required. \nTickets:\nPresale (through 2/21/25): $20\nI-House Members & Students: $15\nAt the door (all attendees): $25 \nA special thanks to the City of Davis Arts & Cultural Affairs Program and UC Davis Inclusive Excellence for their support of this program. \nAbout Karolina Letunova: \nKarolina Letunova grew up in Western Siberia. Her short stories and short shorts have appeared in AGNI\, The Cincinnati Review\, The Kenyon Review\, and The Threepenny Review. She has an MFA from the Helen Zell Writers’ Program at the University of Michigan. \nHer writing has received support from Bread Loaf-Rona Jaffe\, California Arts Council\, The de Groot Foundation\, the Elizabeth George Foundation\, as well as fellowships and residencies at Good Hart Artist Residency\, Monson Arts\, Ragdale\, Storyknife\, Ucross\, and VCCA. \nSince 2020\, Karolina has volunteered at Logos Books\, which raises funds for the Davis Public Library.
