SUMMARY:The Davis Humanities Institute Presents “The Tallest Dwarf” Documentary Screening and Q&A with the Filmmaker
DESCRIPTION:“The Tallest Dwarf” charts filmmaker and UC Davis Professor of Cinema and Digital Media Julie Wyman’s quest to find her place within the little people (LP) community at a moment when dwarf identity is poised to radically change. The feature-length documentary premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) in 2025 and will make its campus debut on April 8\, 2026\, followed by a conversation between the filmmaker and Mark Povinelli\, an actor\, lead participant in the film and former president of Little People of America. Reception and musical interlude by UCD music students to follow. \n“A beautiful manifesto that shows the power of body acceptance.” (Forbes) \nThe Davis Humanities Institute (DHI) fosters research and collaborations within and beyond the humanities and arts\, empowering scholars\, students and communities to engage with the most pressing global and local challenges. Bringing scholars and artists together on stage\, this screening of “The Tallest Dwarf” and conversation between Wyman and Povinelli will be an opportunity to see this mission in action. \nCome celebrate the relaunch of the DHI and get a preview of what’s to come for the Institute!

SUMMARY:Stories on Stage Davis
DESCRIPTION:Naomi Williams\, author of the novel Landfalls\, long-listed for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize and former Director of Stories on Stage Davis and actor Sara Matsui-Colby will be presenting a reading of “Dead Astronauts”—about nine-year-old Hana lives in Long Beach\, California\, in 1972\, in a family she already understands is strange — a white father who speaks perfect Japanese\, a Japanese mother who won’t step onto the balcony without her outside shoes\, a religion that keeps detailed records on who will burn forever and who will not.\nJeri Howitt\, Founder and Director of Stories on Stage Davis from 2013-2016\, and returning to the Director position for Season XII and Tim Gaffaney\, Director of Casting for Stories on Stage Davis will present a reading of a story called “Escape\, Escape\, Escape”—a psychological suspense piece with a light\, almost playful touch — until suddenly isn’t. This is a story that will stay with you\, and that performs beautifully\, because so much of what it’s about is the unreliability of the voice telling it. Storiesonstagedavis.com \n

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Cheri Radke
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening to hear about Cheri Radke’s debut novel\, An Accident of Dragons! \nAbout the Author \nCheri Radke has been a librarian\, a bookseller\, and an academic coordinator. She studied Linguistics at New York University and went on to earn a Masters in Library and Information Science from Kent State University. She lives in Woodland\, California and can be found on social media @cheriradke. \nAbout the Book \nAn unlikely lord finally meets a problem he can’t flirt his way out of in this adventurous and light-hearted queer cozy fantasy featuring pirates\, dragons\, kidnapping\, tea\, and other high-fantasy delights for readers of Rebecca Thorne\, TJ Klune\, Sarah Beth Durst\, and Travis Baldree. \nIn theory\, the dragoness of Summer can make any resident on her island the ruler\, if the previous Lord Summer is so careless as to die without an heir. In practice\, absolutely no one expected her to choose Teddy\, the last lord’s middle-aged fancy man. With his quick wit\, heaps of charisma\, and excellent dress sense\, Teddy brings plenty of virtues to his new role\, but statecraft\, pedigree\, and decorum are not among them. That’s all right: he’s done his duty to the island\, and his five-year-old daughter\, Zinnia\, will make a brilliant Lady Summer when her time comes. \nExcept when a ship of desperate mainlander thieves arrives\, Zinnia’s caught in the fracas and taken hostage. Teddy jumps into the rescue mission without delay\, even though his days of adventures on the mainland are long buried with his lover. But his sailors have never seen their destination\, and worse\, the hard-liner admiral who leads them thinks Teddy’s a worthless dandy. Against a conniving robber baron\, a sorceress who’s tamed her own dragon\, and ordinary people with everything to lose\, the crew faces terrible odds. But with all he loves in danger\, Teddy must prove there’s more to him than he’d ever intended to show. \n
