SUMMARY:Anticipatory Grief Support Group
DESCRIPTION:There is no living without loss. Yet inside all loss\, no matter how painful\, there are seeds of hope. Grief doesn’t affect us only after a major loss or death; it’s something we experience when we know a loss is coming. In fact\, this kind\nof grief can take us by surprise because we feel the effects of grief even while trying to ignore what’s coming. And our grief is compounded because it’s not only death that worries us\, but so do all the changes that are coming—physical and mental decline\, shrinking social circles\, financial concerns\, and loss of dreams and plans. Whether you’re a patient\, a family member\, or close friend\, this support group is designed to help you process what you’re feeling\, find companionship and perspective from others\, and find a pathway forward with dignity and even hope for a meaningful parting and transition to the next stage of your journey.

SUMMARY:Poetry Night Reading Series: Cami Rothmuller and Iris Jamahl Dunkle
DESCRIPTION:The Poetry Night Reading Series is excited to feature poets Cami Rothmuller and Iris Jamahl Dunkle at 7 PM on Thursday\, February 15th\, 2024\, on the first floor of the John Natsoulas Gallery\, 521 1st Street in Davis. \nCami Rothmuller is an undergraduate at UC Davis\, pursuing a degree in English with an emphasis in creative writing\, and a favorite contributor to Poetry Night. She writes about myriad aspects of life\, from intimacy and trauma to nature and insects\, but has a particular fascination with the intersection of nature\, madness\, and secular worship. She recently received the Pamela Maus Award for Poetry and the Lois Ann Lattin Rosenberg English Department Essay Prize. Her newest manuscript is titled A Crucible of Sunlight. \nIris Jamahl Dunkle is an award-winning poet and biographer whose work challenges the American West’s male-oriented recorded history by researching the lives of women. Her fourth collection of poems\, West : Fire : Archive\, was published by The Center for Literary Publishing in 2021. Dunkle wrote the first full-length biography on Charmian London\, Jack London’s wife\, Charmian Kittredge London: Trailblazer\, Author\, Adventurer published by the University of Oklahoma Press in 2020 (now available in audiobook). Her next biography\, Riding Like the Wind: The Life of Sanora Babb\, is forthcoming from University of California Press in Fall 2024. Dunkle teaches at Napa Valley College\, UC Davis\, and Dominican University\, and is the Poetry and Translation Director of the Napa Valley Writers’ Conference.  \nThis event will take place on the first floor of the John Natsoulas Gallery (521 1st Street in Davis) at 7 PM on Thursday\, February 15th\, 2024. An open mic will follow the featured performers. Open mic performances will be limited to four minutes or two items\, whichever is shorter. As Robert Southey says\, “Be brief; for it is with words as with sunbeams – the more they are condensed\, the deeper they burn.” The open mic list typically fills by 6:50 PM\, so please arrive early if you would like to perform something during the 8 o’clock hour. Attendees who request to be added to the list after 7 PM will be invited to try again at a subsequent event. \nFind the Facebook event for this much anticipated evening of poetry and stories at https://www.facebook.com/events/1583432025741614  \nThe Poetry Night Reading Series\, taking place on first and third Thursdays of the month at 7 PM\, is generously supported by the people and poets of the Sacramento Valley\, by John Natsoulas\, and by Thea and the other members of the staff at the John Natsoulas Gallery. Your host for this event will be Katerina Hanks\, producer of The Poetry Night Reading Series\, in lieu of Dr. Andy Jones\, the poet laureate emeritus of the City of Davis. Poetry Night is supported by Helaina Flores and Cami Rothmuller. \nFind out more about the Poetry Night Reading Series in Davis\, California by visiting http://www.poetryindavis.com. \n
