SUMMARY:The Art of Being Human\, Shambhala Weekend 1
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Being Human\, the first Shambhala Weekend presents the view that human beings\, at the core\, are fundamentally awake. By training in meditation\, we learn to remember our natural confidence and relax to the freshness of the present moment\, no matter what that moment may bring. This intimate retreat provides instruction for sitting and walking meditation as a means to develop mindfulness in daily life. \nWe’ll discover that awakening is not about escaping from the world we live in but instead is about bringing our practice to every aspect of our lives: work\, play\, relationships\, and more. It all begins with giving ourselves the opportunity to reconnect with our true human existence — the experience of our five senses\, the feeling of emotions in our body\, and yes\, even the awareness of thoughts across our minds. \n

SUMMARY:Tai Chi Classes at the Davis Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:Tai chi (太极) is an ancient Chinese martial art that is practiced for health and self-defense purposes. It is a type of moving meditation in which breathing is coordinated with a series of fluid movements and postures. Different forms of tai chi incorporate different postures\, and sometimes props such as swords or fans. Tai chi without props is called tai chi chuan (chuan means “fist”). Qi gong\, which is often used as a warm-up for tai chi practice\, consists of slow\, gentle movements coordinated with breathing exercises to promote the flow of qi (the body’s vital life force energy). Both tai chi and qi gong offer numerous benefits\, including stress reduction\, improved posture\, increased mindfulness\, and enhanced energy levels. Regular practice improves balance\, flexibility\, and strength while fostering relaxation and focus.  \nTina currently offers classes in the simplified tai chi chuan 8-\, 13-\, 16-\, and 24-forms\, and the Yang style 42- and 48-forms. Mastery of any of these forms may take years\, but persistence is the only requirement for learning tai chi. Thus\, while the 8- and 24-form tai chi chuan are considered the most basic\, students of all levels are welcome in all of Tina’s classes. People with limited mobility may participate in a chair.   \nCheck www.tina-fitness.com for more details!

SUMMARY:Fernando Palma Rodríguez – Visiting Artist Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Fernando Palma Rodríguez combines his training as an artist and mechanical engineer to create robotic sculptures that utilize custom software to perform narrative choreographies. Central to Palma Rodríguez’s practice is an emphasis on indigenous ancestral knowledge\, both as an integral part of contemporary life and a way of shaping the future. Drawing on Aztec mythology and pictorial codices — as well as colonial histories — his works reframe language through the physical activation of these linguistic symbols. He lives in the agricultural region of Milpa Alta outside Mexico City\, where he runs Calpulli Tecalco\, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Nahua language and culture. \nOrganized by the Maria Manetti Shrem Art Studio Program and supported by the College of Letters and Science at UC Davis. Co-sponsored by the Manetti Shrem Museum.

SUMMARY:100+ Women Who Care Yolo County Quarterly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:100+ Women Who Care Yolo County is an extraordinary group of women who make an immediate\, direct\, and positive impact on Yolo County through collective giving. Our members commit to giving $100 each quarter to a nonprofit serving Yolo County that is selected by the members. Since our first meeting in November 2016\, 100+ Women Who Care Yolo County has made 30 collective donations totaling over $350\,000 to 25 unique nonprofits. We’ve made a big impact using our simple model of giving together. \nWe meet just four times a year (February\, May\, August\, and November) and each meeting includes a half hour of socializing followed by a one hour meeting. We hear short presentations from three nonprofits\, we vote\, then everyone donates to the selected organization. Just like that your $100 donation can turn into a $10\,000 collective donation and make a big impact!  \nOn November 7th we will consider: \nFriends of Adult Day Health Care \nTrue Connections Community Programs \nCancer Champions  \nThis year we are pleased to be partnering with our local Sudwerk Brewing Company to make our meetings fun and festive as we come together to support nonprofits working in our local community. We’ll start with time to mingle from 7pm-7:30pm so you can connect with each other\, meet representatives from the nonprofits\, and ask any questions you may have. The meetings begin promptly at 7:30pm where we’ll hear from three nonprofits and then vote to decide who will be the recipient of our collective gift. We’ll also hear from previous recipients about the impact of our gifts and randomly select the nonprofits to invite to the next meeting. \nEveryone is welcome! No RSVP or reservation required to attend. Only members can vote\, but you don’t have to be a member to attend. New members are welcome anytime and commit to donating $100 per quarter for at least one year. If you are interested in joining as a member prior to the meeting\, please visit our website. \n
