SUMMARY:Free Uber\, Lyft\, and Cab Rides for New Year’s Eve and Day
DESCRIPTION:According to the Annual Report of California DUI Management Information System\, of the total number of crash fatalities in 2018\, 32.1% were alcohol-related in California. We are committed to helping our community not be a part of this statistic. \nWe pride ourselves on making our community safer and giving back to our neighbors as much as we can. That is why this holiday season\, if you decide to go out and celebrate\, we will pay for your cab ride home to ensure that you make it home safely. \nWe’d like to introduce a new community initiative: Free Uber\, Lyft\, and Cab Ride Program to help reduce the number of drunk drivers on the road during the holidays. This holiday season\, if you decide to go and drink\, please make the responsible choice to grab a ride home instead of getting behind the wheel. We will reimburse you for your fare home\, so save that receipt! \nRead more about our Holiday Ride-Share Program below for full details. \nHow It Works:\nThe program is simple. If you have been drinking – take an Uber\, Lyft\, or cab\, and you’ll get a reimbursement from us! \nWe want you home safe this holiday season. \nQualifying 2024 Holidays:\n\nSuper Bowl Sunday\nSt. Patrick’s Day\nCinco de Mayo\nIndependence Day\nLabor Day\nHalloween\nThanksgiving Eve & Day\nNew Year’s Eve & Day\n\nDetails To The Program:\n\nRides must be in Solano County\nRides must be taken between 5 pm on the day of the holiday and 10 am the next morning.\nYou must be of legal drinking age to qualify (21 and over).\nValid for one\, one-way ride to a safe destination.\nLimit one reimbursement per household.\nA maximum value of $25.00 anywhere within Solano County.\nThe maximum value includes a tip of up to 10%. SUMMARY:The Art of Being Human\, Shambhala Weekend 1
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Being Human\, the first Shambhala Weekend presents the view that human beings\, at the core\, are fundamentally awake. By training in meditation\, we learn to remember our natural confidence and relax to the freshness of the present moment\, no matter what that moment may bring. This intimate retreat provides instruction for sitting and walking meditation as a means to develop mindfulness in daily life. \nWe’ll discover that awakening is not about escaping from the world we live in but instead is about bringing our practice to every aspect of our lives: work\, play\, relationships\, and more. It all begins with giving ourselves the opportunity to reconnect with our true human existence — the experience of our five senses\, the feeling of emotions in our body\, and yes\, even the awareness of thoughts across our minds. \n

SUMMARY:Tai Chi Classes at the Davis Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:Tai chi (太极) is an ancient Chinese martial art that is practiced for health and self-defense purposes. It is a type of moving meditation in which breathing is coordinated with a series of fluid movements and postures. Different forms of tai chi incorporate different postures\, and sometimes props such as swords or fans. Tai chi without props is called tai chi chuan (chuan means “fist”). Qi gong\, which is often used as a warm-up for tai chi practice\, consists of slow\, gentle movements coordinated with breathing exercises to promote the flow of qi (the body’s vital life force energy). Both tai chi and qi gong offer numerous benefits\, including stress reduction\, improved posture\, increased mindfulness\, and enhanced energy levels. Regular practice improves balance\, flexibility\, and strength while fostering relaxation and focus.  \nTina currently offers classes in the simplified tai chi chuan 8-\, 13-\, 16-\, and 24-forms\, and the Yang style 42- and 48-forms. Mastery of any of these forms may take years\, but persistence is the only requirement for learning tai chi. Thus\, while the 8- and 24-form tai chi chuan are considered the most basic\, students of all levels are welcome in all of Tina’s classes. People with limited mobility may participate in a chair.   \nCheck www.tina-fitness.com for more details!

SUMMARY:Short Story: Writing the First Draft
DESCRIPTION:Have you been wishing for more time to read and to write? Let’s help you write your next\, or possibly\, your first (!) short story. We’ll fill the winter’s long dark nights with unforgettable stories\, community\, and words by reading the newly published The Best American Short Stories 2024 together. This year’s anthology is guest edited by Lauren Groff\, who’s a fantastic short story writer. I trust her taste and I can’t wait to dig in. I hope that you can join me! \nIn each class we will:\n– Discuss the week’s stories to develop our sense of what a short story can do.\n– Review core craft aspects of writing a contemporary short story and apply what we learned via guided writing prompts.\n– Use the focusing power of in-community writing to complete a first draft. \nThis class is for you if:\n– You’re brand new to writing and want to learn in a supportive and inclusive atmosphere – Write in other genres and want to try your hand at literary fiction\n– Want to improve your ability to get the first draft on the page\n– Want to meet others writers in our community\n– Struggle to fit reading and writing into a busy life \nExpectations outside of class:\n– Read two stories per week from The Best American Short Stories 2024 anthology\, edited by Lauren Groff. (Instructor will be in touch after registration deadline about a local group rate for the book)\n– Optional: work more on your story draft\, if desired. \nKarolina Letunova grew up in Western Siberia. Her stories appear in The Cincinnati Review\, AGNI\, The Kenyon Review\, among others. She has an MFA from the University of Michigan\, where she was a Rackham Merit Fellow and a 2020-2021 Zell Postgraduate Fellow. She was the 2023 Bread Loaf-Rona Jaffe Scholar in Fiction and a 2023-2024 California Arts Council Artist Fellow. \nHer writing has been supported by the 2024 The de Groot Foundation Writer of Note grant\, as well as residencies and fellowships at Ucross\, Storyknife\, Good Hart Artist Residency\, Ragdale\, VCCA\, and Monson Arts. \nShe lives with her family in Davis\, CA\, where she’s at work on a novel. \n  \n\nAbout
