SUMMARY:A Weekend of Tule Teachings with Diana Almendariz and Family
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a weekend of Tule Teachings\, led by Diana Almendariz and her daughters Christina Almendariz and Ooti Maxine. Through two free\, public events – a field trip and a hands-on workshop – they will introduce the community to the natural and cultural importance of tule\, and share their understanding of how tule has been – and can be again – interwoven into our land\, waterways and our lives\, through stories and touch. \nWhile rooted in Wintun ecology and culture\, learning to care for tule benefits all those who live alongside it. With this in mind\, Diana complements her cultural storytelling with scientific knowledge\, and encourages a holistic approach to learning where all compatible perspectives are encouraged to thrive. \nField Trip to the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area | Suggested Donation please RSVP\nSaturday May 3\, 9 am-12pm\nCaravan begins at Yolo Bypass Wildlife Headquarters (45211 Co Rd 32B (aka Chiles Rd)\, Davis\, CA 95618). This auto-tour through the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area will introduce participants to the natural ecology of these wetlands\, along with its plant\, animal\, insect\, and bird familiars. The caravan will stop at 2 locations for exploration and discussion with Diana and other knowledge keepers of the marsh. Space is limited\, so ride-shares and carpools are strongly encouraged. \nPlease complete our registration form so we may gather information on how to best accommodate the needs of our community members. Further instructions (including agenda\, what to bring\, etc) will be emailed to registrants closer to the event. \nPlease register for this event here: bit.ly/tulefieldtrip \nMaking with Tule Hands-on Workshop | Suggested Donation please RSVP\nSunday\, May 4\, 3-6pm\nInternational House Davis\, backyard\nThe workshop will introduce participants to how tule has been used historically by Native Californian peoples\, and how we might care for it so it can take care of us. Created for beginners\, the workshop will help you feel comfortable with handling and using tule for making cordage and/or dolls. Light refreshments will be provided. \nPlease register for this event here: bit.ly/tuleteaching \nBios: \nDiana Almendariz is a naturalist\, culture-bearer\, storyteller\, and visual artist who has been working on the cultural and ecological revival and restoration of her Wintun homeland for over three decades. Her practice includes storytelling\, land-based pedagogy\, and traditional arts such as basket-weaving\, boat-making\, and more. She has been passing on this knowledge to her daughters who are accomplished cultural workers themselves. \nChristina is a Native Californian cultural practitioner of Maidu/Wintun/Hupa and Yurok heritage\, a Montessori teacher and mother of five\, who is passionate about nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards. \nOoti Maxine is a cultural practitioner and a visual artist\, who has grown up in her Maidu homeland in Sacramento\, and speaks of the many influences that shape contemporary life for Native Californians. \nThis project is a partnership of the YoloSol Collective\, the International House Davis\, the Yolo Basin Foundation\, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. This project has been made possible in part by a grant from the Alliance for California Traditional Arts\, in partnership with the California Arts Council\, a state agency\, the Walter & Elise Haas Fund\, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation\, and with support from Imagining America.

SUMMARY:Join Our Creative Planning Workshop to Help Shape the Future of Campus!
DESCRIPTION:Ever wished you could redesign parts of campus to be more walkable\, bike-friendly\, or just more inviting?  \nNow’s your chance! Join us for an interactive\, hands-on Place It! workshop where your ideas will help shape the future at UC Davis. \nWhat’s Place It!?\nForget long surveys or endless brainstorming sessions—this workshop taps into your creativity in a whole new way. Using everyday found objects (provided at the event)\, you’ll build models that reflect your memories of spaces and your vision for an ideal campus. The first part of the activity is done individually\, helping you connect with what matters most to you in a space. Then\, you’ll work in groups to design the future—together. \nWhy Should You Join?\nThis isn’t just a fun creative exercise (though it definitely is that!)—it’s a chance to directly influence campus planning. Your models will help planners understand what’s important to our community\, ensuring that real changes reflect real needs. Most people don’t realize that urban and campus planning starts with ideas from the people who use these spaces every day—that means you! \nTo kick off the workshop\, all are invited to join a Sensory Walk from 2 to 3 p.m.\, starting outside the entrance of the Student Community Center. This optional\, reflective stroll through select campus spaces is designed to spark creativity and deepen your connection to the environment. It’s a perfect warm-up for the hands-on Place It! workshop\, but entirely optional—feel free to attend just the walk\, just the workshop\, or both! \nAnd That’s Not All…\nAt the event\, we’ll unveil the lucky winner of a Brilliant ‘L’ Train bicycle by Priority Bicycles\, valued at $749! This sleek\, sustainable ride is a perfect fit for UC Davis’ commitment to eco-friendly transportation. Join us as we celebrate and award the bike to its new owner. \nSo come share your vision\, get inspired\, and be part of shaping the future of UC Davis. No design experience needed—just bring your ideas!
