SUMMARY:Building Communities that Work: What Village Homes Can Teach Us Today
DESCRIPTION:A symposium that examines what Village Homes can teach us today about climate resilience\, ecological infrastructure\, and social cohesion. \nIn 1975\, a radical design experiment in community living began in Davis. The Village Homes neighborhood took root in a town shaped by the influence of the university\, progressive local government\, and a culture open to forward thinking. A big vision – and a bit of luck – helped turn that moment into a model for environmental sustainability and a strong community. As Village Homes marks 50 years\, its relevance to today’s climate and social challenges are explored in a UC Davis Design Museum exhibition. The exhibition is the launching point for this half-day symposium that includes civic leaders\, scholars and practitioners from the disciplines of Community Regional Development\, Design\, Environmental History\, Agroecology\, and Geography reflecting on what Village Homes can teach us today about climate resilience\, ecological infrastructure\, and social cohesion.

SUMMARY:Davis Craft and Vintage Fair
DESCRIPTION:Davis Craft and Vintage Fair began as the Square Tomatoes Craft Fair more than 10 years ago! The event was started by instructors from the UC Davis Craft Center in order to have a monthly craft fair for local artisans and the local community. We embraced local vintage vendors in 2017\, we’ve grown and we are still home to local artists and makers from the Davis and greater Sacramento area. \nWe collaborate with local non-profits starting with Couleurs Vives Art Studio who joined us in 2018! Many of our talented vendors can be found at other festivals like the Davis Phoenix Coalition’s Pride Fest\, the I-House’s International Festival\, and 2nd Friday ArtAbouts on E Street Plaza. \nExpect to see friendly vendors with local handmade and original art\, crafts\, quality vintage items\, upcycled treasures\, earth-friendly creations\, good food\, and more. Free live music fills the open space for a lively atmosphere so be sure to stop by and join us!  \n

SUMMARY:2nd Friday ArtAbout reception: Cathy Brorby
DESCRIPTION:A Celebration Of Color\nCathy Brorby\nquilts\, wool appliqué\, fiber art\nApril 28 to May 30\n2nd Friday ArtAbout Reception: May 8\, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.\nLogos Books\, 513 Second Street\, Davis\, CA\, 95616 \nCathy Brorby has always enjoyed making things with textiles. Her sister taught her how to knit when she was in elementary school and this experience led her to learn crochet\, embroidery and cross-stitching. \nIn 1995\, Brorby and a dear friend went to see the movie “How to Make an American Quilt” and it inspired them to take a quilting class for beginners. They were immediately hooked. She soon realized that cutting fabric into pieces and making a design with them was much more gratifying than cutting out pattern pieces and sewing them together to make articles of clothing. She eventually took more classes and explored other quilting styles and techniques. \nRecently\, Brorby has turned her focus to wool appliqué. She embellishes her works with different threads\, beads and materials in order to add layers of complimentary colors and textures. She loves to experiment with rainbow color schemes and how those schemes flow and interact with each other. \nThe pieces on display are not for sale\, but you are welcome to contact Brorby about her work at cbrorby@gmail.com or 530-219-8211. \nMeet Cathy Brorby at her 2nd Friday ArtAbout reception on May 8 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Live music will be performed by the Folk Music Folks in the Coldwell Banker parking lot next door. \nPublic receptions for local artists will also be held at various venues on that same evening in conjunction with the Davis Downtown 2nd Friday ArtAbout. You can see more details and download a map of venues at facebook.com/davisartabout or https://theartery.net/2nd-friday-artabout \nLogos Books is owned and operated by the Friends Of The Davis Public Library.
