Artists ages 16 and up can drop off one artwork in any medium at the Pence Gallery on Friday\, June 26\, beginning at 11:30 AM. This is a first come\, first served process. No early drop-offs accepted. \nArtworks are limited to 30″ in any direction\, including the frame\, and no more than 50 pounds. All artworks must be framed\, or ready to install. \nThe first 50 submissions will be admitted after artists pay a fee of $35 for Members and $40 for non-Members. Please be prepared to fill out information about your piece including the title\, year made\, medium\, dimensions\, retail price\, etc. \nParticipants can win the Curator’s Choice award\, announced during the reception on July 10. DESCRIPTION:A Taste of Whimsy: Chickens of the 5th Street Community Garden and Friends\nLorie Topinka\nwatercolors and books\nJune 30 to July 25\n2nd Friday ArtAbout Reception: July 10\, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.\nLogos Books\, 513 Second Street\, Davis\, CA\, 95616 \nLorie Topinka embraces whimsy – something playfully quaint\, fanciful\, imaginative\, and delightful – in much of her art and occasionally in her writing. This exhibit showcases that aesthetic in her recent book\, “Chickens of the 5th Street Community Garden and the Rat Wars”; a whimsical work of creative nonfiction that she describes as a children’s book for adults. Her pieces\, inspired by Mexican folk art\, feature watercolors of her chickens\, their friends\, and their adventures in the garden. \nAbout The Book\nGardening is planning plus hard work and luck…and then more hard work. In this fable three chickens transform an abandoned plot into a garden after Lorie injures her knee. They banter and bicker their way through the planning\, planting\, and weeding of this small community garden plot. Then disaster strikes when the summer of 2024 becomes the time of the rat wars. Will the rats eat everything? Will the garden survive this onslaught? Are there lessons to be learned from the struggles with the rats? \nArtist’s Statement\nAs a watercolor artist\, I am drawn to bold colors and iconic images. Whenever I am painting I get lost in the looking and seeing. There is no time\, distance\, or separation between me and the object or scene. DESCRIPTION:Davis Craft and Vintage Fair began as the Square Tomatoes Craft Fair more than 10 years ago! The event was started by instructors from the UC Davis Craft Center in order to have a monthly craft fair for local artisans and the local community. We embraced local vintage vendors in 2017\, we’ve grown and we are still home to local artists and makers from the Davis and greater Sacramento area. \nWe collaborate with local non-profits starting with Couleurs Vives Art Studio who joined us in 2018! Many of our talented vendors can be found at other festivals like the Davis Phoenix Coalition’s Pride Fest\, the I-House’s International Festival\, and 2nd Friday ArtAbouts on E Street Plaza. \nExpect to see friendly vendors with local handmade and original art\, crafts\, quality vintage items\, upcycled treasures\, earth-friendly creations\, good food\, and more. Free live music fills the open space for a lively atmosphere so be sure to stop by and join us!  \n
