SUMMARY:Davis Odd Fellows Thursday Live! Featuring Geoffrey Miller
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 7 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall\, 415 2nd St.\, with music starting at 7:30 p.m. All ages are welcome.\n\n\n\nABOUT THURSDAY LIVE\n\nThursday Live! shows are free\, but donations are encouraged to support the musicians. The dance floor will be open for this show! Boogie woogie cheating songs\, love-lamenting ballads\, rockabilly country bops\, and chicken pickin’ guitar solos—the tones of Geoffrey Miller’s style of country music tell a life’s story. \nThursday Live! is sponsored by the Davis Odd Fellows Music Committee with support from KDRT radio. It’s a continuous music series that happens the first Thursday of most months. For more information\, or to be added to the email list\, contact Juelie Roggli at juelrog@gmail.com. \n\n\nABOUT GEOFFRY MILLER\nMiller’s latest release\, Leavin’ 101 (2022)\, is rooted even more deeply in the Bakersfield Sound he grew up on.  “Fans of hardcore Bakersfield sounds will delight in Miller’s latest”\, wrote Country Music People Magazine\, giving the album 4.5 out of 5 stars!  Lonesome Highway commented in review of the album\, “There is little doubt that anyone with an affection for [what] the Bakersfield sound has come to mean…will recognize Miller as a frontrunner in delivering it..” \nMiller began making a name for himself as a country guitar player around Sacramento in the early 2000s.  In 2008\, he toured with the vintage honky tonk band\, Rowdy Kate\, in Europe and began playing with numerous roots country bands back home as his reputation grew. Miller also began earning songwriter credits\, contributing two original songs to Rowdy Kate’s 2007 EP. \nIn 2010\, Miller formed the rockabilly trio Twilight Drifters as the guitarist and lead singer. The Twilight Drifters recorded three albums including numerous original songs by Miller\, and were nominated for an Ameripolitan Award in 2018. \n  \nIn 2015\, Miller’s love for western swing music led to him co-found the trio Sactown Playboys with Olen Dillingham and Zack Sapunor paying homage to legends such as Bob Wills\, Billy Jack Wills\, Les Paul\, and Jimmie Rivers.  In 2018\, Miller was inducted in the Sacramento Western Swing Society Hall of Fame. \n  \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:DLMC Presents: MILLY\, Teethe & Fitting
DESCRIPTION:MILLY\ndream rock – shoegaze – indie-rock \nOriginally the solo project of Brendan Dyer\, his relocation from Connecticut to Los Angeles saw the band expand to include collaborator Yarden Erez. After signing to Dangerbird Records\, 2019 saw the band on tour with Swervedriver & DIIV\, and in 2021 they released their acclaimed EP Wish Goes On. To understand Eternal Ring\, you have to go back to Dyer’s childhood. Learning guitar and drums from his uncle\, a musician\, from the age of ten\, Dyer was one of the only young people in his rural Connecticut town interested in anything other than sports and other stereotypical markers of American life. Naturally\, Dyer began to gravitate towards emo — the closest thing many teens have to outsider art — as an art form he could identify with\, bands like Hawthorne Heights subconsciously laying the groundwork for the music he would make as an adult. “It probably only lasted a year or two that I was interested in that sort of thing\, but now I feel like it’s become a thing in my life where it’s like\, full circle\,” he says. “When we were writing this album\, and touring before writing this album\, I was reconnecting with a lot of the music that I was listening to in my youth and realizing that there was a reason why I liked this music so much.” \nThe Milly of Eternal Ring\, though\, is a vastly different project from the one Dyer began in his childhood bedroom. Where the band’s old songs were dazed and gorgeously laconic\, Eternal Ring is muscular\, punchy\, almost alarmingly direct. You only need to hear album opener and debut single “Illuminate” to understand the change: slipping quickly from emo balladry into something heavy and intoxicatingly intense\, it’s a clear marker that this is the work of a tighter\, more dynamic Milly. There is no slack to these songs — even the nine-minute “Stuck In The Middle” is an impossibly taut endurance work\, jumping from emotive build to gut-wrenching squall in a second. \nTeethe\nindie-rock – lofi – slowcore \nTeethe is a slowcore band currently based in Dallas\, Texas whose members consist of Boone Patrello of Dead Sullivan\, Grahm Robinson of MAH KEE OH\, Madeline Dowd of Crisman\, and Jordan Garrett of Hat Hair. \n  \nFitting (Local support from Sacramento) \nPost-punk – indie-rock – alternative \n  \nMobile ETickets \nThis venue is wheelchair accessible \nAll Ages

SUMMARY:Mike Marshall and Choro Famoso: Choro Music of Brazil
DESCRIPTION:UC Davis Department of Music \nMike Marshall\, mandolin; Andy Connell\, clarinet and saxophone; Colin Walker\, 7-string guitar; Brian Rice\, pandeiro and UC Davis lecturer in music.  \nChoro is an important musical tradition of Brazil with characteristic Afro-Brazilian rhythms and European popular dance tunes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMike Marshall has become a legendary figure in acoustic music. He has the ability to seamlessly blend his American roots background with a deep understanding of European classical music\, Brazilian choro\, and other musics of the world. Mike is a fluid Jazz improviser and a master on mandolin\, guitar\, mandocello\, and violin. At age 20 he made his Carnegie Hall debut with jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli as a member of the David Grisman Quartet. He’s been nominated three times for Grammy awards and collaborates frequently with mandolin virtuoso Caterina Lichtenberg. \nChoro is a vibrant\, virtuosic style that emerged in late 19th century Brazil from a mixture of European popular dance forms and Afro-Brazilian rhythms. While it reached peak popularity in the 1930’s and 1940’s\, Choro is now enjoying a renaissance in Brazil and is growing in popularity in the U.S. and elsewhere. \nChoro Famoso seeks to bring Choro music to new ears and expose audiences to its more than 140 years of history\, celebrating the diversity of Brazil and one of their first art musics. As a music that is traditionally committed to memory and improvised upon\, it allows the musicians to spontaneously arrange the music and challenge the other players to keep up\, not unlike in jazz. The playful ease with which Choro Famoso performs this Brazilian music is contagious. Choro Famoso and Mike Marshall have recorded two albums together: Segundo Vez (2014) and Mike Marshall & Choro Famoso (2004). \nMike’s Website: https://mikemarshall.net/biography

SUMMARY:UC Davis Symphony Orchestra: “Resurrection”
DESCRIPTION:Christian Baldini\, director and conductor \n\nIn its first reunion with alumni chorus members since 2018\, the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra and University Chorus join together to perform Mahler’s ‘Resurrection’ Symphony\, a long-form symphony imbued with a deep reverence for Heaven and the journey to it from our mortal world. Mahler’s ‘Resurrection’ Symphony is clearly a Beethoven’s-Ninth kind of work\, albeit written sixty plus years later\, and written after decades of further symphonic development by not only Beethoven\, but Berlioz\, Brahms\, and others. \n\nProgram \nGustav Mahler: Symphony No. 2 (“Resurrection”).  University and alumni choruses\, Erik Peregrine\, director\, and a soprano and mezzo-soprano to be announced

SUMMARY:Matilda Jr Auditions
DESCRIPTION:Davis Musical Theatre Company’s (DMTC) young performers division invites you to auditions for Matilda Jr—open to youth ages 7–17 (or 18 if still in high school). \nRebellion is nigh in Matilda JR.\, a gleefully witty ode to the the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination! This story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires will have audiences rooting for the “revolting children” who are out to teach the grown-ups a lesson. \nMatilda has astonishing wit\, intelligence… and special powers! She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher\, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing\, however—the school’s mean headmistress\, Miss Trunchbull\, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts\, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!
