SUMMARY:Eli Conley with KC Shane: Queer Pride Concert
DESCRIPTION:Eli Conley is an indie folk singer-songwriter\, teaching artist\, and activist based in Sacramento\, California. He makes music for queer and trans folks\, justice seekers\, and anyone who doesn’t fit easily in a box. Eli’s voice is tender and heartfelt\, with melodies and that can leave you feeling teary-eyed yet hopeful. As a queer transgender man from the South\, his songs tell stories that aren’t always reflected in roots music. \nEli founded Queer Country West Coast\, a regular series featuring LGBTQ+ blues\, folk\, and country artists in California. He has opened for Carsie Blanton\, Heather Mae\, and Grammy-winner Kimya Dawson\, and been featured in the Huffington Post and the Advocate. \nEli’s third album Searching for What’s True will be released in spring 2023. Themes of uncertainty\, ache\, and loss come up again and again on this record. The songs are drawn from the concrete and immediate details of daily life: a stuffed animal clutched in a child’s arms\, a colorful sunset after a forest fire\, a confederate statue toppling to the ground. \nThis will be an acoustic full-band show with soulful\, queer folk-rock songwriter KC Shane opening the show to kick off his first tour.

SUMMARY:UC Davis Symphony Orchestra: Fate & Alter Ego
DESCRIPTION:Christian Baldini\, music director and conductor\n\n\n\n\nUC Davis Department of Music\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, June 3\, 2023 – 7:00pm\n\n\n\n\nPhilip Glass: Violin Concerto No. 1\nwith Chase Spruill \nPyotr I. Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 \nWinner of the Concerto Competition \nThis program features Philip Glass’s popular first concerto for violin\, with his iconic sound: open\, full of motion\, and yet without a lot of tonal changes. The soloist is Chase Spruill\, who is a champion of Glass’s violin music. This contrasts with Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony: regal and full of dueling themes\, and which also features one of his best waltzes. \nhttps://youtu.be/0X1GGizje4g \nAbout the Works \n  \nPhilip Glass’s First Violin Concerto was his first piece written for the concert hall. Unlike many of his previous works—operas\, film scores\, and more—the piece is thrilling on its own without added audio-visual elements. The piece features a moving first movement\, a romantic second\, and a rousing finale that fades gently away like a wonderful memory. As the composer said in a biography\, “I composed the piece in 1987 thinking\, let me write a piece that my father would have liked […] A very smart nice man who had no education in music whatsoever\, but the kind of person who fills up concert halls. They’re the people that keep the whole business going.” \n  \nTchaikovsky’s Fifth is—to borrow a phrase from Star Wars—a duel of fates. He half-attempted suicide only a year before by wading into the ice-cold Moscow River\, hoping to catch a fatal illness. Tchaikovsky struggled with how he was viewed by the public (which he feared suspected his homosexuality)\, and his Fifth Symphony might reflect this struggle. \n  \nAbout the Soloists \n  \nViolinist Chase Spruill has an international reputation as a performer of contemporary music\, interpreting minimalist masters such as Philip Glass\, Michael Nyman\, and Henryk Gorecki. In 2020\, BBC Music Magazine hailed his debut solo album of the music of British composer Michael Nyman\, saying “Spruill plays with great spirit … and a great sense of presence\,” and called him “an engaging and convincing advocate.” Also in 2020\, Capital Public Radio called him\, “a breath-taking performer” while MusicWeb International said\, “Spruill plays with fire and yet sensitivity … and with absolutely secure rhythmic foundations.” \n  \nHe was a core faculty member with the nationally celebrated Community MusicWorks organization in Providence\, Rhode Island\, from 2012 to 2017\, and was a visiting professor of violin and orchestral studies at Wheaton College from 2015 to 2017. Dedicated to exploring potential intersections between music and social justice\, Spruill returned to his hometown in Vacaville to develop and run the music program at the new school Sierra Vista (K–8) where he remains on faculty. He’s collaborated with other notable artists such as the Kronos Quartet\, composer and electric guitarist Steven Mackey (B.A. music ‘78\, UC Davis)\, and the BAFTA-nominated composer Brian Reitzell\, releasing music from the critically acclaimed television series Hannibal. His recordings appear on the Philip Glass record label Orange Mountain Music and on Supertrain Records.

SUMMARY:Pops Concert
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, Dr. Gardias directs the Pops Concert\, an annual performance that unites the three Davis High School audition choirs. During Pops\, the Madrigals break character to sing and dance alongside Jazz Choir and Advanced Treble Choir in a special musical medley selected by our choreographer. The choirs rehearse months before the performance\, and singers are given the opportunity to showcase their individuality through solos and duets. This performance is a refreshing opportunity for Madrigals and parents to take a break from the Renaissance lifestyle and enjoy all that the 21st century has to offer.

SUMMARY:Rodrigo & Gabriela: In Between Thoughts
DESCRIPTION:In Between Thoughts…A New World Tour\n\n\n\n\nWith Special Guest Bahamas\n\n\n\n\nMondavi Center Presenting Program\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, June 4\, 2023 – 7:30pm\n\n\n\nABOUT \n\nGrammy Award winning duo Rodrigo y Gabriela grew up on an eclectic mix of classic rock\, heavy metal and flamenco\, a rare alchemy of influences that still informs their work today. Not long after the dissolution of their first band\, the two musicians set off with their acoustic guitars and ended up in Ireland\, where they soon ran out of money and began busking on Dublin’s Grafton Street — a turn of events that led to their crossing paths with Irish singer/songwriter Damien Rice\, who then asked them to open for him at an early headline show. As they developed their distinct breed of guitar music\, Rodrigo y Gabriela quickly gained recognition for their extraordinary live show and made their full-length debut with 2002’s re-Foc. Along with turning out 8 additional acclaimed and kaleidoscopic albums over the years: including Area 52 (a 2012 effort made with a Cuban orchestra)\, 9 Dead Alive (a 2014 release that spotlighted their more rock-leaning sensibilities) and the 2020 Grammy winning Best Contemporary Instrumental Album\, Mettavolution\, the duo has cemented their status as a globally renowned live act. Among their many successes: performing at The White House for the President and First Lady of Mexico at a 2010 event hosted by Barack Obama; headlining the Jazz World stage at Glastonbury; selling out major venues like the Hollywood Bowl\, Red Rocks Amphitheatre\, London’s Royal Albert Hall\, Radio City Music Hall\, and the Sydney Opera House; and performing to massive crowds in such far-flung cities as Tokyo and Paris. 2023 sees the release of their most ambitious project yet\, the Advaita Vedanta inspired In Between Thoughts…A New World\, which features their signature dual guitar attack augmented by a full orchestra\, and a corresponding world tour. \nVIP Packages Available*:  \nRodrigo y Gabriela Meet & Greet Experience \n\nOne Premium Seat Ticket\nAccess to a Meet & Greet with Rodrigo y Gabriela\nPhoto Opportunity with Rodrigo y Gabriela\nAutographed Rodrigo y Gabriela Set List\nOne VIP Exclusive Recyclable Tote Bag\nOne VIP Exclusive Reusable Metal Water Bottle\nOne Commemorative VIP Laminate\nEarly Entry (where available)\nCrowd Free Merchandise Shopping (where available)\n20% off at Rodrigo y Gabriela’s Official Store\n\nRodrigo y Gabriela VIP Merch Package \n\nOne Premium Seat Ticket\nOne VIP Exclusive Recyclable Tote Bag\nOne VIP Exclusive Reusable Metal Water Bottle\nOne Commemorative VIP Laminate\nEarly Entry (where available)\nCrowd Free Merchandise Shopping (where available)\n20% off at Rodrigo y Gabriela’s Official Store\n\nRodrigo y Gabriela Premium guitar package – SOLD OUT \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*Note: VIP packages are managed by Warner Music Group. Purchasers will receive an email from Warner Music Group approximately 3-5 days before the show date with instructions regarding the fulfillment of the package items and additional details regarding day of show information.
