SUMMARY:Acapella Concert: Tune Up
DESCRIPTION:Peregrine Welcomes Acapella Group Tune Up\,\nFeaturing Tunes from Both Sides of the 60s \n  \nLocally based\, “acapella-plus” group Tune Up will perform at Peregrine School on Saturday\, July 8. The free concert is the third performance of Peregrine School’s 2023 Second Saturday Concert Series. The program features vocalists Bill Cavins\, Dianna (Dede) Craig\, Lane Suarez\, and Vicky Boesch. Prior to the performance\, Craig will present a 1-hour educational presentation. \nTune Up formed when members Cavins\, Suarez\, and Boesch decided to create a trio after years of singing in the Davis Arts Center’s Doo Wop class taught by Craig. The trio eventually grew to become a quartet when Craig joined the group adding her acoustic guitar and occasionally joining the singing with the addition of a fourth vocal part. Though the group continues to perform classic doo wop tunes\, their repertoire has developed to include an eclectic range of material from the 1940s through the 1990s. \nCavins has lived in Davis since 1973 and is the former owner of Ganesh Works. Prior to the formation of Tune Up\, he had performed in Full House and Two Tone Shoes. In addition to teaching doo wop\, Craig has been a local performer for over 30 years and has performed with Biscuits and Honey as well as Now and Then. Suarez has been singing harmony since the age of 5. Since coming to Davis in 2013\, she has performed with the Davis Threshold Choir\, the Free Range Singers\, and Kindred Spirits. Boesch is a local attorney\, a UCD alumni\, has a background in theater\, and loves to sing. Cavins comments\, “Tune Up is luck to have her [Boesch].” \nThe gates of Peregrine’s South campus (2650 Lillard Drive\, Davis) will open at approximately 9:45am. Outdoor seating is limited and will be on a first come\, first served basis. For additional information\, please contact Peregrine School at (530) 753-5500 and www.peregrineschool.org. \nA 501(c)3 non-profit\, founded in 2007\, Peregrine School is an independent school that builds children’s capacity to learn\, think and do in our ever-changing world. SUMMARY:Aaron Jonah Lewis Live
DESCRIPTION:Aaron Jonah Lewis Live at The Melon Ball 07/14/2023\nEvent Code:  071423TICKET \nDESCRIPTION \nAaron Jonah Lewis is a champion fiddler who has been elbow-deep in traditional American fiddle and banjo music since their first lessons at the age of five with Kentucky native Robert Oppelt. Lewis has taken blue ribbons at the Appalachian String Band Festival in Clifftop\, WV\, and at the Old Fiddlers Convention in Galax\, VA\, the oldest and largest fiddlers convention in the country. They are also noted for their mastery of multiple banjo styles.  They spend most of their time teaching\, touring as a solo performer\, with the Corn Potato String Band\, and other projects. \nAs a banjoist\, Lewis explores some interesting veins in the roots of Old Time\, Bluegrass\, Ragtime and Jazz music through their newest recording\, “Mozart of the Banjo: The Joe Morley Project.” This project is devoted to the music of the great English prodigy and virtuoso composer Joe Morley (1867-1937)\, who wrote a significant body of great banjo pieces in a technique that people today call “classic fingerstyle.”\nGreg Adams\, Archivist at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage\, says\, “Lewis is one of the few performing musicians with the facility to build compelling musical bridges between the printed banjo music and techniques of the 19th century and the instrument’s journey into recorded sound by the turn of the 20th century.” \nAaron Jonah Lewis is passionate about sharing early fingerstyle banjo music. They bring light to the fact that classic banjo was the most popular form of music a hundred years ago\, though today it’s almost entirely forgotten. They are “trying to keep (classic banjo) alive and spread it around\, as it’s a delightful style that brings joy and connects us to the depth of our shared American history.” \nWe are hoping to also offer a small-group banjo workshop with Aaron on the afternoon of the show.  If you are a banjo player interested in attending\, please let us know\, we’ll need a minimum of 5 attendees in order to make sure it happens but will hope for as many as 12.

SUMMARY:Misner & Smith
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BAND \nMisner & Smith’s music is a combination of soaring vocal harmonies\, tight instrumental arrangements\, and story-filled\, poetic songwriting\, adding up to a sound that truly feels like a full band coming out of a duo. They jump across genres in the diversity of their songs\, but the music harkens back to the bedrock of American rock and folk\, with a vocal blend that can shake the walls like a freight train and then hush the room to a whisper in a single song. They spent the pandemic playing weekly live-streamed shows from their living room\, and are now back in the studio recording their new album\, due to be released later this year. \nROBIN’S NEST \nRobin’s Nest hosts intimate live performances in northern California. Scroll down for concert descriptions and dates. To RSVP\, please use the form below. We will only accept reservations for two people (you and your guest) at a total of three total concerts made at one time. In other words\, please only sign up for three concerts so everyone has a chance to see their desired performers. Additional reservations will be offered 30 days before each concert if there is room. All Shows are from 6:30 – 9:30 pm. Doors open at 5:30. Please bring a low-back lawn chair\, something to drink to share with others\, and a $20 donation per person for the musicians.Snacks will be available but feel free to bring dinner.
