After a hiatus due to Covid and the complete reconstruction of the event location\, folk musicians are once again invited to bring their acoustic instruments and play together informally during this jam session at Wyatt Deck (located next to the redwood grove in the UC Davis Arboretum). \nPull out your fiddles\, guitars\, mandolins\, penny whistles\, pipes\, flutes\, squeezeboxes—you name it!—and join your fellow musicians for a little bluegrass\, old-time\, blues\, Celtic\, klezmer\, and world music over the lunch hour. All skill levels welcome and listeners are invited. Takes place Fridays from 12–1p. \nShort-term parking is available in Visitor Lot 5 on Old Davis Road at Arboretum Drive. Hourly rates start at $1.75.

DESCRIPTION:An unprecedented\, transcontinental collaboration\, Shakti united eastern and western musicians\, and in the process forged the template for what is now called “world music.”\nFrom the West came virtuoso British guitarist John McLaughlin\, who re-wired jazz via his work with Miles Davis and the Tony Williams Lifetime. From the East came visionary tabla player Zakir Hussain\, who had accompanied legendary Hindustani musicians from adolescence. A music shop owner in New York City’s Greenwich Village connected the two in 1969\, sowing the seeds of what was to become Shakti. “There wasn’t a first meeting\,” Hussain recalls today. “It felt like a reunion of long-lost brothers…” \nIn 1973\, McLaughlin stunned the music industry by walking away from the Olympian popularity and acclaim of his pioneering jazz/rock ensemble\, the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Something else was calling out to him — a music that reflected his evolving spiritual practice while feeding his insatiable hunger to converse\, communicate\, and explore. \nWith Hussain\, violinist Shankar\, and ghatam player T.H. “Vikku” Vinayakram\, McLaughlin founded Shakti. “For me\,” McLaughlin reflects\, “it was an imperative that Shakti become my permanent group after the Mahavishnu Orchestra.” Together they honed an ecstatic new fusion\, blazing uncharted pathways and demonstrating the potential of such global composites to generations of musicians around the world. \nNow McLaughlin and Hussain are preparing to resume their journey — joined by percussionist V. Selvaganesh (T.H. Vinayakram’s son)\, vocalist Shankar Mahadevan\, and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan — for an album of new compositions and a world tour marking Shakti’s 50th anniversary. Today’s Shakti honors the legacy of the original band by acknowledging their tradition while continuing to push beyond existing boundaries into new musical landscapes. “It’s really a thrill\,” McLaughlin says of Shakti’s 50th anniversary plans. “I’m delighted to be part of this marvelous tradition of the Shakti group.” \n\n\n\n\n\nJohn McLaughlin\, guitar\nZakir Hussain\, percussion\nV. We will only accept reservations for two people (you and your guest) at a total of three total concerts made at one time. In other words\, please only sign up for three concerts so everyone has a chance to see their desired performers. Additional reservations will be offered 30 days before each concert if there is room. DESCRIPTION:(Oakland\, CA) Indie psych-rock project King Dream\, fronted by Bay Area songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Lyon\, release their new single “Lost Summer” Friday\, 10th March off their forthcoming sophomore album Glory Daze: IV due out April 7th on Dimed Records\, followed by a European tour of Germany\, Austria\, and Czech Republic presented by ROLA 12th April through 7th May. \n  \nWhat started as a four song EP at the beginning of 2020 blossomed into a self produced triple album by the end of last year\, spanning a myriad of collaborators\, including GRAMMY winning mix engineers Dave Way (Fionna Apple\, Macy Gray) and Michael Brauer (John Mayer\, Coldplay). The live quintet consists of Lyon’s closest collaborators: bassist\, best friend\, and best man Zak Mandel-Romann\, wife and Rainbow Girl\, Caitlin Gowdey on keys\, and long time touring buds and bandmates in a plethora of projects Nick Cobbett on drums and Adam Nash on guitar. The first installment\, which the band will tour this spring\, is chalk full of rock anthems with soaring vocals and sky splitting guitar solos\, sure to echo from sweaty small clubs to fervorous festival audiences. \n  \nWith a soulful voice\, roots planted in the golden era of California psychedelia\, and a wry energy that places him firmly in the 21st century\, Lyon charts a path through timeless themes: disillusionment with oneself\, with adulthood\, with one’s country — and the discovery\, time and again\, that somehow there’s still plenty worthy of a love song. \nLyon\, a Bay Area native\, left college to co-found the folk-rock band Tumbleweed Wanderers\, who toured the country for five years supporting The Revivalists\, Moon Taxi\, and Greensky Bluegrass and playing major American music festivals such as Outside Lands\, Hangout\, Shaky Knees\, and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass\, all before turning 24.. Inspired by jack-of-all-tradesmen like Jim James\, Jonathan Wilson and Blake Mills\, Lyon spent the next several years honing his craft and expanding his skill set\, touring as a guitarist in various projects and becoming a producer and engineer out of his home studio\, Dimed Records\, in addition to releasing and touring his debut self-titled album and now\, the triple album follow up “Glory Daze.” \nKing Dream’s sophomore album “Glory Daze\,” is a magnum opus born out of happenstance and brimming with ambition. It’s a cinematic journey of an album rarely seen these days. It’s about keeping the fire burning\, and the desire yearning\, while empires and life as we know it crumble around us. Folks – from youth to seniors – bring their acoustic string instruments such as guitar\, banjo\, ukulele\, mandolin\, fiddle\, Dobro\, and acoustic bass\, accordion\, harmonica\, hand percussion and our voices! Other wind instruments (flutes\, clarinets\, trumpets (w/ mutes)\, melodicas\, etc\,…)\, marimbas\, are welcome\, too! \nRuhstaller is a working farm that grows its own hops\, then brews\, and pours a wide variety of beers (all available for purchase) on its 40 + acre spread. Our resident free-range chickens\, ducks\, sheep\, goats\, and farm staff\, welcome customers with their well-behaved dogs! You read right – responsible dog owners are allowed to bring their dogs – on leash – to the Hop Farm! \nOvernight accommodations – Many tent camp under the shade of the 30-acre walnut orchard\, or stay in a vehicle camper.  NOTE; we now have extended vehicle camping – YaY!  Vehicle camping is limited to 18 units under 30 feet in length and is reserved on a 1st come\, 1st serve basis. Those 18 spaces will go quickly and accompany an additional $100. fee.  Register EARLY!!!  \nSome Jammers prefer a local Airbnb\, motel or stay with local family or friends. Mornings will include coffee\, tea\, and an opt-in potluck breakfast\, a morning stretch & vocal wake-up. Afternoons will include more workshops and facilitated jams in different styles.
